Topic: More Switch Color Options . . . at a Cost

There are now Switch recolors available thanks to a company called ColorWare. The Verge reports:

Gadget-painting company ColorWare — which paints customized versions of everything from Roombas to iPhones — has added the Nintendo Switch to its ever-growing lineup. You can now buy a brand-new Switch through ColorWare, and customize it using 58 different colors, both solid and metallic, before finishing it off with a gloss or matte finish. The customization includes the front and back of the Switch tablet, the Joy-Con controllers, and even the dock.

Of course, the added splash of color comes at a price. Purchasing a Switch through ColorWare will cost $499, a $200 premium over a standard unit. The company says that painted units will ship in six to eight weeks. It’s definitely not cheap, but for those looking for a custom Switch, there are few other options at the moment. Recently custom vinyl skin maker dbrand explained that Nintendo’s new console and its controllers are “not compatible with vinyl wraps or any adhesive-backed skin of any kind.”

[cit. http://www.theverge.com/circuitbreaker/2017/4/3/15164102/nint...

If I hadn't already purchased a Switch, a white and red Joy-Con coupling would be pretty enticing. It would be personally difficult to justify the additional $200 on the unit, though. Thoughts?

Ok, not posted on here, and posted on YouTube and FB a variation of below post, but...

I think that I am the first customer of the ColorWare project for the Nintendo Switch (purchased Joy-Con custom paint job the night they soft launched the service).

Got mine two days ago and it's sick! For me, worth the cost because these are professional custom paint jobs and backed with ColorWare warrant (Joy-Con's themselves are new too).

Posted on Twitter my metallic matte painted creation: Mystique L and Goldrush R Joy-Con's!

Wow, I was actually scoping these custom Joycon paint jobs the other day. It was like $150 for a set of colored Joycons, right?

Expensive, but could definitely be worth it for certain color combinations.

I'd love to see some close ups of the texture of the paint job

Sorry for the delay, wrote this halfway, then decided to take some more pics and include closeups.
Published everything into an Imgur album:

You can use that album to see the nice metallic detailing from the two paints used, and professional paint job ColorWare did.
It's pretty EPIC! <3

Regrading costs.
Well, if we break costs down, then this is why they cost a bit (for painting Joy-Con's only).
First, I paid a total of $187.68 for my brand new Joy-Con's, painted by ColorWare.
ColorWare would have needed to purchase a new set of controllers, and then there is shipping plus tax for the UK.

Joy-Con's Grey L & R = $79.99
Shipping to UK with custom costs included = $38.68

So far that adds up to $118.67.
If we then take that off my total cost, that leaves $69.01.
The remainder would be for: paint itself, maintaining tools, health and safety equipment and upholding H&S US regulations, workmanship, quality control, after-care/customer services support, brand new warranty with ColorWare, labour, profit for ColorWare, amongst other costs.

When I decided to make my purchase, I weighed up the above first, and took into account years of lurking ColorWare stuff , YouTube, and posts, and realised that what ColorWare offer is a bargain overall. If you look at their track record they have near universal praise for supremely professional custom paint jobs.
You can extrapolate the breakdown costs and attribute that for a full Nintendo Switch paint job.

The point that I am making here is that, yes, the initial cost of a custom paint job(s) on electronics may seem expensive, and certainly not for anyone (or for certain budgets), but it is worth every penny if one was to go ahead.

Hope this helps! ^^

Wow, this looks awesome! If I had an infinite supply of money, I'd buy a ton of these! (obviously) I hope Nintendo makes a Joycon design lab later on down the line.

Niiiiiiiice! Looks a good quality paintjob! Is there much of a texture difference compared to the feel of a standard Joy-Con? If the paint proves to be quite durable, I might invest in a pair down the line

Those last 2 shots really show the metallic paint off well.

I'm tempted, but I already have

Grey
Neon Red
Neon Blue
Neon Yellow (preordered)

I like the light green and magenta/dark pink combination. Like a Splatoon set.

Thank you! Really love how they came out, far better than I could have imagined.

Also, design lab? That would be awesome, following what Microsoft did for the Xbox One controllers (but not for XBone Elite...cry cry)!!!

I am sure that there will be super cool new limited edition controllers down the line that I would possibly get, but, my ColorWare ones are definitely unique; unless someone else chooses the same colour combo, I know that I am using something not just out of my own design, but one-off.
Plus, PRETTY!!! <3

Thank you!

I have posted about my ColorWare Joy-Con's on FB and Messenger, and many love the Purple one, but I think that is a psychological affect because of my keyboard and RBG, he he he.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE purple, especially the shades I use (as you can see in the pics, there are many shades). You may be surprised to know that I am not a big fan of gold because so many shades look off or gaudy; this is why I do not like the gold on the Meze Audio 99 Classics Walnut Gold, and went for Walnut Silver. Look at the links below.

99 Classics Walnut Silver (mine):

99 Classics Walnut Gold:
https://www.mezeaudio.com/collections/all/products/meze-99-cl...

However, the few shades I do like of gold are hard to find, but when found are glorious. The Goldrush gold that ColorWare uses is 99% the EXACT type of shade of gold that I adore <3 <3 <3

Yeah the custom paint job is super CLEAN!

Yes, texture wise, big difference to the original, but the matte ColorWare paint texture is very fine. The original Joy-Con's are not glossy but super smooth, and can easily stain from natural skin oils.
The ColorWare Matte paints that I selected are ever so slightly rough to the touch in direct contrast to the original controllers, but in truth are not coarse at all (a smidgen rougher texture basically); a premium feel.

As for durability, ColorWare have been in the custom paint job for years, have had many sponsorship items made for companies, and huge amount of positive reviews and coverage. They also back their work with a warranty, a big YES in my book for customisation.

That is a lot of controllers, and if you are feeling up to it, you can do two-tone swap mods between the case's of your Joy-Con's.

Fun story:
I only ever had the Neon Joy-Con's and was waiting for new colour options, and originally wanted some DBrand skins. However, as we all now know, skins + Switch = BIG NO NO.
After that I was looking at ColorWare but they did not offer options to colour the Switch immediately after the Switch release. I did find a guy who made waves briefly for colouring his switch and Joy-Con Grip in Gamecube colours (plus buttons) but he ran a very small number of runs on Etsy for others who wanted the same.

So, every so often I was checking to see if anyone was doing colouring jobs for the Switch. I knew of ColorWare from YouTube predominately and Head-Fi.org, when they years ago did Sennhesier HD800 headphone custom paint jobs. I LOVE what ColorWare do. One night, looking at their website, I found an option to colour Joy-Con's; I was SO ON THAT and immediately placed an order for two Mystique Joy-Con's (L and R).
My original idea was to have two-tone Mystique and Goldrush on both controllers; Mystique on top, Goldrush on bottom. This was inspired by a photo of a Magic Mouse 2 on ColorWare's gallery page. After emailing ColorWare to amend my order, they advised that creating two-tone controllers was not possible, including no chance to colour buttons 'at this stage'.
In the end, I was able to amend my order by having Mystique Left, Goldrush Right, which was the closest I could get to my initial idea. I think this worked out damn well, and I thank ColorWare dearly for their customer support.

Maybe ColorWare will have a greater breadth of options for Joy-Con customisation, and if so I may email them and create something new, or closer to my original idea.
However, I am in no way disappointed or feel that I have lost out at all; the custom paint jobs that I on my Joy-Con's have more than exceed my expectations, and the subtlety of asymmetrical single coloured Joy-Con's not only looks AMAZEBALLS but suits the theme of the Switch (and pays homage to the official Neon design).

This has been an awesome journey, and I love to get more work done with ColorWare in the future!

I'm not much for this kind of stuff, but I have to admit: that's pretty cool. With the mix-and-match nature of the Joycon, Nintendo would be insane to not eventually allow customers to design their own. It's cool to think how crazily different Switch units can look with Joycon colors and (hopefully) actual unit colors in the future.

Exactly.

Also, thank you! I really want others too see irl my ColorWare Joy-Con's but hope that my pics are good enough...they are really something special... <3

We know that this is what they are intending and heading towards because if you are a Switch Neon owner you can get the opposite Joy-Con colour's separately. They also announced the yellow Splatton Joy-Con colour's too. If you have the cash, you can mix and match between Neon Red L&R, Neon Blue L&R, Grey L&R and Yellow L&R.
I am certain more colour combos will be out.
The whole idea of the Switch has been centred on its modular chops and various play modes, and as the joy-Con's are detachable I cannot see how they would not make different designed Joy-Con's down the line.
Remember, Nintendo 'are' a toy company too

However, I do not think they will have the range of single colours available that ColorWare offers, in either solid and metallic paints (I love their metallic finish) which can further be had in gloss or matte styles (MATTE ALL THE WAY! Well, matte on controllers where your hands and fingers will be, gloss everywhere else). Specifically, these other matte metallic paints are super cool too, besides my fav's Mystique and Goldrush paints: Carbon Black, Candy Apple, Techno, Cosmic, Diamond (basically ultra pure, bright white... <3), Prowler, Star Dust, and Alpine.
I would not choose ColorWare's the 'solid' paints because I think their metallic colours are ultra sweet, but everyone has their own opinion and choices; YMMV.

The point I am making here is that even if Nintendo make new controllers, I would hasten to buy their single colour offerings and instead opt for ColorWare instead. However, if Ninty make unique controllers that have different colours per Joy-Con (logo's, button's, etc) then I may consider picking those offerings, even if just for collecting. An example would be a Mario kart 8 Deluxe, or TLoZ: BotW, themed controller, rather than a solid Yellow/neon/Grey Joy-Con's currently.

I personally hope others take my lead and jump feet first with ColorWare and start designing their own controllers or Switch system with their own custom ideas.

Take a look at their Nintendo Switch/Joy-Con store page, or better their gallery (you can select colours or by device pictures of past projects!):

Nice ..dbrand were doing some Switch skins that just wouldn't take to the Joy-Con's for some reason (cracking, chipping etc.) - to their credit, they stopped selling them (and offered full refunds) as soon as they were made aware of the issue, but a warranty on this type of premium service is a must - just in case! Good to hear that one is included to give you that extra confidence when purchasing

I must say, they look top quality - any issues regarding how well the paint takes would have probably been picked up by quality control by now - yours survived a Trans-Atlantic journey in tact! ..I probably couldn't quite justify the expense at this time - but I'll be keeping them bookmarked if I have an opportunity to treat myself down the line! (Matte Pumpkin, Concord, Clover and Caribbean are the ones I'm particularly keeping an eye on!)

Thanks for getting back to me!

Yeah dude no problem!

I am more than aware of DBrand (and wrote about the issue with adhesives and Switch in another post above), and to me they and ColorWare are what I consider to be titan's in the world of aftermarket custom aesthetic jobs.
Custom Controllers UK for PS4/Xbox One unique controllers are also good, but my two issues with them are paints tat I don't see as 'nice looking' as ColorWare (if only looking at single colour jobs) and limited range of electronic devices. Custom Controllers UK do make some amazing designs in larger numbers than ColorWare however. Check them out too!

Yes, warranty was what stopped me from getting anything from Etsy and similar, and as I noted I was checking ColorWare website like a stalker for Switch stuff (and lucky I found their soft launch for the Switch same night I place an order!). That is because I am not just paying for a paint job but brand new controllers, so ColorWare are protecting both. As my price breakdown above, this was purchase was a bargain to me 'if' you are in the market to customise your controllers.

Here is the link for their warranty (I do not think that you can purchase a second year of warranty for the Joy-Con's, and I think ditto the Switch system custom job):
http://www.colorware.com/support.aspx#pnlWarranty

Also, something that is cool: if you do go with ColorWare and ask them to do a custom job on a 'brand new' electronic device(s), they will repackage the painted device almost as it was originally packaged; when you get the item it would not look out-of-place and look as if it was officially packed and painted by the manufacturer!
I knew of this fact before from years of lurking but to see that in real life was just sublime. That attention to detail was what instantly made me feel that I made the right choice asking them to paint my new Joy-Con's.
So, had I bought a set of official Joy-Con's from the US and shipped them, they would have been identical in packaging to ColorWare (except slit seals of course). As you can see from my Imgur pics, my Joy-Con's were over-the-top protected ^^

I do not know how well exactly the paint will hold up, but, again, from heavy research, ColorWare paints simply last. As long as I keep them safe (I have the bespoke Waterfield Switch Cityslicker case!), they should be fine.
Also, warranty ha ha! Back to that again.

WIN WIN!

DUDE, Matte Pumpkin, Concord, Clover and Caribbean...I am salivating at your choices! Just DO EET and get stuff painted, then post about it and let me know (on twitter or here)!!!!!
Thank me later

I concur with you completely. However, neither will be matte Mystique or Goldrush like mine, muhahaahahaha!!!

Gold TLoZ however...be still my beating heart...
(As long as they get the 'right' shade of gold...).
