Topic: Might the NX just be a proprietary controller solution?

I could totally see the future of Nintendo console gaming being innovative, proprietary-Nintendo controllers with firmware that handshakes with a game-software download, for use with non-Nintendo consoles.

It seems the NX may very well be the final, all or nothing, roll of the dice for Nintendo with regards maintaining their own hardware platform, and if this also fails...then were to from there?

I think game-specific, proprietary peripherals would be the way to go (if it's financially viable). I think part of Nintendo's strength lies in their brilliant innovation and their excellent analogue to digital conversion for character control/movement...I don't think that's something they're going to want to give up but what other alternative is there if producing their own hardware is no longer viable and they need to licence out their properties.

Personally I think this could be a massive leap forward for Nintendo...if they continue developing the peripherals in concert with the games as seems to be the way with Nintendo and if it was easier to manage the sums of money it would take, it might lead to a jump in quality, especially if it's utilising much more powerful existing hardware.

My question would be weather it would actually be more cost-effective to produce a console rather than developing and producing a range of dedicated peripherals.

I think, to remain in the console market they're going to need a system that's basically equal in every way to Sony and Microsoft in terms of the third party software it can support and even then it'll be a struggle. If they can get the mainstream back on-side, maybe with VR targeted specifically at the mainstream it could keep the system viable enough to establish it as a platform for regular third party titles and and at that point the 1st party stuff might well become a U.S.P.
