One of the games teased in today's reveal of Nintendo Switch is a 3D Mario featuring Mario running around a desert environment. The game looks like it's of the free-roaming sandbox design like 64 and Sunshine and doesn't seem to be like Galaxy. It's definitely nothing like 3D Land and 3D World.
Regardless, a new 3D Mario game has been confirmed and could possibly be a launch title. What do you think?
I don't think you can see anything that hints to any of that in the trailer. I am wondering if it has two player since it showed the person playing Mario playing two player later on. That could be cool.
People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

I'm glad they didn't show a 2D Mario game. The game seems to recycle assets from 3D World and the camera might be just a bit more dynamic. I wouldn't go as far and say this confirms a free-roaming 3D game like 64, Sunshine and Galaxy. Too early to tell.
@DefHalan Four player co-op, like 3D World? Thinking about it, that means probably no camera controls at all if there's multiplayer. Super Mario 3D World 2.0 in that case.
Can we really say it plays like 64/Sunshine? Though it is definitely not 3D World, from what I saw Mario was running forward in a 3D corridor like environment. Basically it didn't look like he was romaing around in a fully 3D environment. 3D World is certainly 3D but you still run along a single 'path' of sorts.
If anyone noticed, amiibo were on the shelf by the Nintendo Switch System/Dock when Mario Switch was being played. It's very likely this indicates amiibo support on the system.

A while ago I suggested that Mario Switch COULD/SHOULD be more of an open world game. They could build the Mushroom Kingdom, fill it with platforming areas/options (I used the original Jax and Daxter world as an example). They can easily place castles/fortress all over that world that can act lke levels or dungeons which he needs to complete etc...
While its WAY to little info to say what they are doing, I think I can say they MIGHT be going in that direction.
In the first shot Mario is running toward a town, this could be a town in the middle of a larger area or huge world. Imagine if Mario can turn left or right and run off into a desert....... The castle in the 2nd shot certainly looks like it could also be part of larger area or huge world (we can see a bridge way in the distance)
The 2nd of those screenshots definitely makes it look like a modern Mario 64 type game. You can't do that camera angle for multiple players and it's not complex like Mario Galaxy so that suggests it's a controllable camera single player game, like 64 and Sunshine.
@LegendOfPokemon I loved it too, and if this was a sequel/follow-up to that it would more than have my attention. I just said what I said there because the way Mario ran for that split second was pulled straight out of 3D World and I was being really funny and clever by sarcastically beating people to the punch by getting my sarcastic complaints in first.
At least I thought I was being funny so that's good enough for me.
@Shinion I think it was a great experiment by Nintendo, but we should have something different for NX; hopefully Super Mario Switch delivers. (I know you were being sarcastic though)

@Dezzy If it's a dynamic camera that moves with the players and zooms in and out according to the number of players, then it's certainly possible.
I'd be skeptical of that for the following reason: Imagine trying to judge the direction and scale of a jump that's backwards towards the screen in this perspective. That's a nightmare. Which is why in a full 3D game you'd nearly always turn the camera to align with your direction of movement to better judge it. Or at least align it to be perpendicular. Which of course, you couldn't do if there were multiple players.
The top-down view was really the only workable perspective for complicated multiplayer because it removes that change in perspective. Left and right and back and forward become much more similar the higher up the camera goes. Whereas with this view, left and right are equivalent but back and forward are completely different in terms of your depth perception. I think what you're suggesting would only work with incredibly simple and corridor-like levels. Which really does make it kinda pointless to be in 3D in the first place! It'd be like Crash Bandicoot.
Some evidence I saw when watching the video that points to a game closer to Super Mario 64 was the fact that they showed Mario doing a triple jump like he would in Super Mario 64. From what I remember, that triple jump wasn't present in Super Mario 3D World (or Land.)
