Precisely. 100% of Rocket League's sales are digital purchases - and the eShop chart only charts digital downloads (which kind of skews the chart in favour of digital-only releases) ..it'd be wise to wait and see how L.A. Noire fares in the physical charts before drawing any over-arching conclusions

@NaviAndMii It's not going to chart well in the US physical charts if for no other reason it's not on Amazon at all. To be fair, neither is the PS4 or X1 port. Amazon messed up badly with this (Doom for Switch is also not appearing on Amazon. It used to, but it doesn't now. The page still exists to buy it, I can get to it from my order history, but searching will not show it.)

Plus, yeah, it's an old forgotten game that kind of tanked even when it originally launched and spent more money to produce than it reasonably took in. And the Switch version has the whole "not a real retail game" debacle. And it's $10 more than PS4.

So yeah, it'll tank. Pretty hard. I imagine NBA2k will have done considerably better in the same time, though I also imagine they expected that. The lost Amazon sales must be hitting them hard though.

@sillygostly Turns out only part of the game is on bluray for Xbox and PS4. The rest is downloaded too.

The catch is on Switch you need a 13GB download. The remaining game is on the cart. That doesnt necessitate an SD Card.

Fixed that. Unless the US-Version somehow is 4GB more.

True - I remember it well! ..if I'm not mistaken, I think it may still be the most expensively produced game of all time - and I'm pretty sure you're right, I'm not certain it ever made that money back. That's why I wasn't really surprised to see it get a re-release, if nothing else than to try and claw some of the losses back! ..the only point I was trying to make is that I think it'd be unreasonable - with any game - to base its success/failure off of one skewed chart within 24 hours of release, that's all! ..it (famously) wasn't all that successful when it was shiny and new - so it's logical to assume that it won't be a roaring success all these years later - but the physical charts (relative to, say, Skyrim) will probably give a clearer picture of the kind of traction it's gotten

(Very odd about L.A. Noire and DOOM not being on Amazon US - they're both on Amazon UK! ..wonder why that is??)

@YummyHappyPills Really? Interesting, how big is the download for the PS4/X1 version, do you know?

If large this is especially interesting because it would mean that the problem of the partial game is NOT actually a limitation of Switch card sizes and "Nintendo's fault" but is a product of Rockstar forcing a digital ecosystem on the entire gaming industry and shipping games before half of it is ready to ship. That would be big because it would shift 100% of blame back on Rockstar, and away from Nintendo.

And actually makes it worse because it's not "poor Rockstar dealing with unfair Nintendo pricing" and is back to "Rockstar is exploiting and manipulating all their customers to force a business model into the norm."

@NEStalgia Apparently only 4GBs or so is on the bluray.

To be fair though, this isn't a Switch problem anymore.

Look at 4K games. They aren't coming full on a Blu-Ray because they refuse to upgrade them. Optical media has an upgrade path for these things that hasn't been taken since they were introduced. So you want the full Forza experience? Install those 47GBs off of the disk onto your HDD and download the remaining 50GBs of the game. 1/10th of your storage gone. Well, more like 1/5th as the OS is huge...

@NaviAndMii With the Amazon problem I think it's going to sell BAD next to Skyrim which manages to be the first game that turns up if I search for LA Noire or Doom for Switch, instead I imagine Amazon accounts for a lot of physical game sales.

LA Noire never was visible on Amazon (I checked right after the Direct and periodically after)....maybe that's Rockstar's fault, maybe they had a falling out with Amazon and just never allocated them inventory to begin with? Neither Switch, PS4, or X1 show (but the UK import is the #2 item listed if I search.) So maybe that's on Rockstar and they didn't intend to sell LA Noire on Amazon?

But Doom, WAS available in search back after the direct. I think when Amazon did their annual, ridiculous, often site breaking "it's Christmas so we have to redesign the whole site every year!" change something must have broken. If I search for "doom Switch" it shows me Skyrim, and then Doom (UK Import.)

But yeah, L.A. Noire really lost some money as I recall. Not sure how much hit 2k took and how much was funneled into the bankruptcy of Team Bondi. I still have the Game Informer cover from when it released, somewhere I was like "Oh, I remember that game, it sounded cool, years and years ago. Whatever."

@YummyHappyPills 4GBs on the BlueRay? So interesting....so this is NOT a Switch problem, Nintendo problem, or "cost of carts" problem. This is how Rockstar actually intended to release this game, across the board! For a 6 year old game!! And Nintendo is exonerated. That's, honestly disgusting. I went from boycotting the game on Switch and considering PS4, to considering the game on Switch, to considering ignoring everything from Rockstar henceforth. I may get this one on Switch since they actually made it partly playable on Switch.....I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing.

This is all really depressing what you say. It does make me fear my days of gaming are coming to and end after Switch. Why would I download 50GB anything for a game I bought in a retail box? (Let alone on my connection I really can't....) And storage eats up fast. Eww.

Are those 4k games playable in SD off the disc? Or is it just a useless hunk of plastic without a 50GB download?

NEStalgia

Haruki_NLI

@NEStalgia I have no idea if its simply the 4k assets that are downloaded, or if that's all they can fit but I can tell you now, games are getting bigger than what a Blu-Ray can hold anyway.

And frankly, no one has noticed. Why? Because they install off the disc anyway.

@NEStalgia Yeah, the 4K updates are completely optional but if you bought a Xbox One X instead of the Xbox One S chances are you want the 4K experience.

@YummyHappyPills It's really depressing that they've "quietly" moved away from physical media to force people into digital downloads like Steam like they always wanted, and nobody even noticed

Though it's a little impressive that even despite that this problem with LA Noire is NOT on Nintendo's "bad policy" but on 2K's business model, and in fact the Nintendo version fares BETTER than the other versions by being partially playable on the cart (though worse, because the download is presumably bigger.) Makes me wnat to support the Switch version, at least more than the PS4 version. Nintendo's heavy hand apparently did force them to do "something." You make the prospects for Gen 9 really look bleak to me though....

@Grumblevolcano That's good that they're optional. I surely would not be downloading 50GB to improve resolution. (Plus I have no plans to buy a 4K screen any time this decade.....my 1080p PC monitor smushed into my face is just fine ,and the 4k ones are too heavy for my carefully chosen and modded mount )

Maybe by PS5 they'll decide to use a new media that fits it all rather than downloads for a more mass-market friendly approach. (Then Switch will still be stuffed....of course...)

Why? The Switch has 32GB, plenty of room to fit the retail version...

@sillygostly 1000% Agree, i have NBA 2k18 and DOOM but no more Cancelled My LA Noir Pre-order when i saw this half and half madness, i beg you Nintendo please make them stop.

I recall back in the day when we moved from Carts to CD's the industry said that the savings in media would mean games became cheaper. The reality was that the price of games increased substantially. For shame is all i am saying for shame. Greed trump honourable intentions.

There is currently a viable alternative to this though, one that the S and X iterations can accommodate.

Ultra HD Blu-ray discs.

They are available in three sizes, 50GB (same as a double layer standard Blu-ray, but it could be used by developers if they wanted to utilise the superior read speed to make more games playable directly from the disc), 66GB and 100GB (enough to house the "full" Forza experience).

Or they could just use a second standard Blu-ray disc.

"Gee, that's really persuasive. Do you have any actual points to make other than to essentially say 'me Tarzan, physical bad, digital good'?"

You couldn't be any more wrong with that statement there if you tried.

@Hughesy umm, no. that "32GB" on the switch turns into about 27-28GB after system data/updates and such. Then account for the fact that ALL game save files have to be added to that remaining internal memory. So ya, download the game on your base 32GB, and just forget about any future game saves or system updates.

It’s a shame La Noire got a bit of a bed rep because of the extra downloadable content... and stupid youtubers complaining that it can’t fit in the Switch’s internal memory... I mean if you own a Switch you should know you’re gonna need a large SDcard... or several... people seem to forget this game was like 3-4 discs on the Xbox360.

The port itself is amazing, it looks great and it’s smooth. Maybe people are turned off by the size, maybe they don’t like the vibe of the game. I kind of wish Rockstar would have released Red Dead first - with the Zombie DLC added to it... that would have stormed the charts.

If I can play GTA 3/vice city/san andreas/Lost City/Chinatown wars on my mobile phone, there is no excuse why these games can’t be played on the Switch... GTA 5 is the game we all want, and that’s part of the reason I bought LA Noire, I enjoy the game, especially on the Switch, but I’m hoping GTA 5/Red Dead comes next.

Pitifully predictable, Correctly political

OorWullie

@DizzyDee81 Agreed, I think it's safe to say GTA V is guaranteed to be a huge success if it ever comes. It's position in the weekly all format charts after all this time proves that. Being portable would mean there will be many buying the game for a 2md or 3rd time, as well as shifting consoles. I doubt Rockstar would be pinning all their hopes on LA Noire being a success though to see if they would continue to support it or not. Hopefully not anyway. It will play some part of course but hopefully they'll take the Bethesda approach and give it a real go by releasing a few games. They certainly never helped LA Noire's chances though by not sending out review copies in advance, doesn't make sense why they wouldn't. It's a quality port and it receiving good pre-release reviews would have helped repair some of the damage caused by the news of the additional download that's needed. Plus if it was clear beforehand that Xbox and PS4 users have to do the same then it would have helped shine the Switch version in a better light. It doesn't make it go away but still, it would have helped.
