Topic: KOF 98 or Garou - which to buy

Posts 1 to 12 of 12

I have enough eShop credit for one Neo Geo game - I'd like a fighter, and having narrowed it down to KOF 98 or Garou I'm not sure which to buy.

I didn't get heavily into these games back in the day, dabbled with them a bit in MAME but I'm basically new to these series (but not new to fighting games).

Any objective advice will be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance everyone.

@BustedUpBiker I own them both and I prefer Garou. They're both great games though so you can't go wrong with either.KoF98 has a huge cast of fighters so if you like to learn every character you'll get a lot more out of it than you will Garou, which has a much smaller cast.either 8 or 10,I forget.Garou just feels better to me though, the graphics are great,it's silky smooth and the moves are fairly easy to pull off.I'm no fighting game aficionado,I just play them because I enjoy them and to me,as far as retro fighters go,Garou is as good as it gets.

@GrailUK is the one to ask.

This argument is as old as the hills... I've been doing the same research, and basically it boils down to two core arguments. Garou is small but beautiful, simpler but still complex enough to be rewarding; KoF 98 is just massive, offering greater longevity with all its characters, and is often labelled the best KoF. I'm still umming and ahhing myself...

As a side note, I got Waku Waku 7 last night - it's great! Small roster of characters, but it's so bright, cheerful and cartoony, plus the animation is excellent. Not saying anyone should get it over Garou or KoF 98, but I like that it feels so different to USF II, which is my only other fighter at the moment.

@Krillin_ says it better than me.

I plan on getting Waku Waku, along with Samurai Shodown 4 when I eventually get an arcade stick. Hopefully Last Blade will be out by that time too.

I would say you can't go wrong with either and the above comment by @Krillin_ nails it. My personal preference is Garou. Genuinely think it's one of the best fighters ever made.

KoF98 certainly has more scope. More characters, options so you can edit matches between team fights or 1v1. If you are planning on really exploring the King of Fighters franchise, then this is a good first stop.

Garou is without doubt the most polished. The sprite work and presentation still impresses today. Only 1v1 and much smaller roster but the main brawlers from KoF are pseudo represented. If you need a fighter to plug a hole in your library, then I would choose this one.

I never drive faster than I can see. Besides, it's all in the reflexes.

Thank you all very much. Valuable comments.

As I'm plugging the gap in my library I'm inclined to go for Garou. Sounds like it'll be the best fit for me right now. Depending how much I get into it, I'll go for KOF 98 next time to expand my fighting roster on Switch.

Thanks all for your time.

KOF 98 has Two different Fighting style : Extra & Advanced.

Extra Mode allow you to charge the Gauge by yourself and use a Desperation moves. When your HP is Red, you can use Unlimited time Desperation Moves but Super Desperation moves can be used by Full Gauge meter + Red HP. Also, in this mode you can Dodge instead Rolling.

Advanced mode is similar with A-ISM from Street Fighter Alpha 3, except the way of using. Desperation moves can be used at least you have 1 Star. If you have 2 Stars, you can Empowering your Attacks for several seconds by pressing both Punch and Kick buttons. Super Desperation moves can be used when you are Empowered + have at least another 1 Star.

I can say, go for KOF 98.

@BustedUpBiker You are most welcome! I don't think you can go far wrong if you go with Garou with an eye on KoF '98 at a later date. It should be worth noting that although Garou has a smaller roster it is still can be played as very complex fighter and for me I see it very much as the Street Fighter 3 of the SNK fighters. I own both games on other platforms but I bought Garou first and am looking to buy KoF '98 at a later date as both a truly deserving to be in a fighting game fans collection. (It should also be noted that I'm no master at fighters but it doesn't stop me loving the genre!!)

I am waiting for Real bout too. I think I will buy Fatal Fury 3 and Real Bout Special for sure, then I could buy Real Bout 2 too but I'm not sure I remember I quite liked it but I preferred Real Bout Special so I could save some money for something else... But for now none of those game is available yet lol
I have to wait
