Topic: Joy-Con /w Grips or Nintendo Switch Pro Controller

So I just picked up the Super Smash Bros Ultimate Limited Edition Nintendo Switch.

I see that this system has 2 types of controllers; the Joy-Con controllers or the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. I have played a few of my friend's Switches with the Joy Con for MK8 and it's way too small of a controller. I find it difficult to use; it does the job but isn't enjoyable.

I am asking if anyone has any previous experience with buying the grips for the Joy-Con controller and does it make it more comfortable compared to using the controller alone?

I plan to get for now just party games so I plan to get MK8, Super Mario Party, Overcooked 2, and Super Smash Bros.

I will be using my Gamecube controller set and adapter with the switch to play Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. I am asking what people's thought are with the grips for the Joy-Con controllers and does it make the controller feel more enjoyable or am I better off buying 2 Nintendo Switch Pro controllers? I'm just trying to have my guests have a more enjoyable experience when playing these party games (Mario Party, MK8, Overcooked 2, maybe Street Fighter 2).

Just trying to see what everyone's thought and experiences are with the controllers.

The Pro Controllers are the one most want to get but are expensive to have. And if you play fighting game you should buy the Hori multi button gaming controller.

Do you have any experience with getting the Grips for the Joy-Con controller? I don't plan to get a lot of fighting games just some old school ones like Street Fighter II.

I always told myself I would stick with the JoyCons in the grip...but after a while bought a Pro Controller and well, that was that. So much more comfortable and I would always have syncing issues which was a pain. Yes, they are expensive but worth it imo.

I am fine with the Joy-Cons on or off the unit, they fit my hands just right, my only issue is when playing Mario Kart while docked, my hands get all sweaty and the Joy-Cons end up sliding right out of place, and considering I abuse drifting like a pot addict abuses Twinkies, it gets real frustrating, so i really guess it depends more on your play style which you shoud go with

Hmm, now you are tempting me. I have also read a few places online that Mario Party can only be played with Joy-Con controllers is that true? If so then I guess I have no choice but to invest in another set of Joy-Cons with the grip to play with Mario Party.

Are there any other games that are only compatible with the Joy-Cons and not the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller?

Pokémon Let’s Go doesn’t support pro controller.

Alot depends on what types of games your going to get if something like BoTW then a Pro Controller would work better as it is bigger and easier to hold on to. Joy-Con are good if your on the go but my nephew plays just fine on the Joy-Con attached as he has smaller hand to use but I had no problem when playing with the Joy-Con and BoTW as well. So you should go and test the older Black Pro Controller to can how they fit your game style. But if you want a good controller OEM then the Pro Controller isn't a bad choice. I know there are other out there but the Pro has Rumble feature that others don't have since it is Nintendo OEM controller. So there a perks to getting the Pro Controller.

Yeah, there are games that wont be compatible with the pro, thats just the nature of the system. I have 4 joy cons for that reason and 2 soon to be 3 pro controllers. Oh...and im picking up a pokeball on friday because, why the hell not.
But yeah...if I had to choose between a pro controller and the grip, definitely pro controller.

I think you mean grips for individual joy cons? If that is the case, I don't have grips for the individual joy cons, but I bought several different steering wheels. The wheels themselves make great grips; add bulk, make the shoulder buttons more pronounced, much more comfy, etc.

They are not all created equal! The YOK (Gamestop brand) are terrible; it's all about how the shoulder buttins work! the ones I like the most are these from PDP: https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Switch-Hyper-Drive-Controller...

That said, I bought a pro controller at launch, and have since bought multiple additional joy con and grip types, so when playing multiplayer no one tends to use just a single joy con.

There are games that require an entire Joy Con controller (both pieces) to play? I'm just not sure what to really invest in at the moment, I just don't want to have friends using these small Joy-Con controllers and cramping their hands when playing games. I'm considering going the Joy Con with Grip option due to some games only utilizing the Joy-Con controllers, which to me is annoying that the Pro controllers are not compatible with every game.

I wasn't clear from your question whether by "Joy-Con with grips", do you mean using a single Joy-Con in some kind of grip as a controller, or do you mean putting both Joy-Cons into the grip that comes with the Switch and using that? It makes a big difference which of those two you mean.

In my opinion, using a single Joy-Con, even in some kind of grip, is a vastly inferior experience to using a Pro Controller for any sort of action game which requires precise control inputs. Using both Joy-Cons as a single controller is a lot better, though still not as nice as the Pro Controller. Pro controller has much nicer feeling analog sticks and an actual d-pad, so it's easier to be precise in games which require that. Additionally it's bigger even than the dual Joy-Con setup, which is good for people with larger hands.

That said, an alternative to a Pro Controller is to buy a second pair of Joy-Cons and grip for them. That way you can use them as two controllers for a pretty comfortable experience, or split them into 4 less comfortable controllers in a pinch if you want to do some 4 player action. With the Pro Controller you don't have the option of splitting it into two controllers.

That's the thing, is if I need to split the controllers in a pinch into 4 players; using the Joy-Con controller by itself is not very comfortable. The person who posted above you "baller98" mentions the individual grips you can get to make it more comfortable. That's the grip I am talking about. I'm confused if certain games need BOTH Joy-Con controllers or not, or can they all be played with half a Joy Con (the positive/negative).

Is it true that every game for the switch is compatible with the Joy-Cons and not the Pro controller? If so then I think I am better off investing in Joy-Con controllers over the Pro controller correct?

The system comes with a grip for both joy cons. In general it is comfortable, but the shoulder buttons are iffy. L and R are unergonomic to hold or use regularly. ZL and ZR are small and often it is difficult to keep your fingers on them.

Pro controller is great. L and R are still unergonomic for long term, and the sticks have too long of a travel point IMO, but holding it it is the most comfortable controller I have ever used.

Is the smash console out already?

Yes, the Smash console is out already.

I mean the real question I must ask is. "Is it true that every game for the switch is compatible with the Joy-Cons and not the Pro controller? If so then I think I am better off investing in Joy-Con controllers over the Pro controller correct?"

They're are games the uses Joy-con each by themselves that lend to more immersive gaming. But if you stay with the Joy-con remember you need to get the Charging Joy-Con grip the one that comes with the Switch don't charge the Joy-Con or you have to keep them attached to the Switch to charge when in the Dock.

I prefer using dual Joy-Con without a grip. I can slouch and have my arms in opposite directions. It's great. Using the grip or the Pro Controller feels quite constrictive in comparison.

I hate single Joy-Con play though. They are far too small for extended play sessions.

@ChrisToePha There are games that require both, Minecraft for example requires a full set for a single player. So, in order to play multiplayer, you would need at least two pairs of joy con. Other games have reduced playability on a single joy con (Diablo III, FIFA 20XX).

I have a pro controller for myself, but when I first bought my Switch, I bought an additional pair of joy con so that I could play with four people if I needed to. As others have said, its not the best experience, but two pairs of joy con for $160 is better than four pro controllers ($280) in terms of price, but perhaps not in comfort or overall experience.

Interestingly, there are some games, like Mario Party for example, that don't support the Pro Controller at all! It sounds like a combination might be your best bet. Buy some single joy con grips for the joy con you [will] have to increase their comfort, and buy two additional pro controllers for player 1 and 2? Or an additional set of joy con for four players with single joy con grips, and an additional comfort grip for two players with a complete pair.

I think you might be surprised with how much fun four people can have with just single joy con. But hey, if you've got the money and want the comfort, go Pro!

Thanks for the insight, I appreciate it. I guess I will try the Joy-Con with the single grips for now and see how that is. Looks like not many people use the Single Grips for the Joy-Cons, no one has been able to share too much on it, except for how comfortable the Pro controllers are.

It just depends on what you are needing. You spoke about needing four controllers, if that is the case then buying an extra set of joycons is going to be the most cost-effective. Otherwise, you'd have to buy two pro controllers. So if you are looking to have the most controllers possible then I would buy another set of joycons.

As for the grips, I haven't used them but I know what you're talking about. They look like a tiny controller, right? I'm sure they must be more comfortable than using the joycons naked. While the joycons aren't very comfortable for long sittings, they suffice.

If comfort is your main concern tho, you really should invest in a pro controller. If you can afford more than one so that multiple guests will have a pro controller, then even better.

It could be fun to use the pro controller as a reward though. Let's say you are playing with three other people on MK8, the winner of that round gets the pro controller on the next round. That could make the games even more fun.

That's a good point actually. Holding them comfortably works quite well, as long as there's no tilt/motion control going on. That's when that stops being useful for me.

Personally I worry about the controllers used for smash. The sticks will die and the buttons will wear. I would like some cheaper options that are great to play with just so these types of games can get their own bashing without hurting the wallet too much.
