I think all of the three Mario RPG series are on their way out - at least for their fans. Unless they pull a full 180 like they did with Odyssey, both Paper Mario and Mario & Luigi have become the bare minimum of a RPG. The same, tired, old gameplay, the same bland Levels like the NSMB games, the same plot as in NSMB - I swear sometime around the rise of NSMB, Nintendo just dropped Mario and said 'Welp, that's your life now.'
.... until Odyssey. Odyssey, whilst sticking to the same ol plot, had so much creativity (I mean, heck, how many Toads are even there?). So I'm hoping after Odyssey, they dare shake things up for Mario RPGs again and try something new like they did when PM and M&L were first created.

@link3710 I couldn't get into that game (Paper Jam). No matter how hard I tried to focus on it, it was just bland. I had an easier time with Fire Emblem Fates and that's saying something because I didn't like that game in the long run....
I would personally love a new Super Mario RPG or a new Paper Mario game like the first two. Those games are classics, and none of the newer Paper Marios or Mario and Luigi games come close in terms of gameplay imo.
@GoldenGamer88 I wouldn't say all of them went downhill the same time. Super Paper Mario was incredibly wild wacky and creative, and it was definitely in the NSMB era, alongside the Galaxy games. Even Dream Team was pretty wild and wacky. Crazy robots, dozens of Luigis, talking pillows, Block people, weird bird things, etc.
The only reason Paper Jam was so bad for the M&L franchise was the awful decision to not include characters from M&L or Paper Mario to avoid scaring off people who weren't fans of both. Only problem being that left the games with none of the appeal either of it's component series had.
Anyways, M&L (remake heaviness aside) is looking fairly healthy. It's mostly Paper Mario I'm worried about.
? Well they still have the Mario and Luigi RPG series so I don't think Paper Mario has to be an RPG. I think they can take it wherever they want (and they have) I would love a sequel to Super Paper Mario though. Such a fantastic game.

I don't know. Mario & Luigi: Dream Team visited a bit too many generic locations for my liking, not to mention Paper Jam. It all just feels rather gimmicky and not truly innovative to me.

Just curious, would the jokers in this thread like to name a few games which's art style would better suit a Super Mario RPG remake than that of Captain Toad?

First two, and maybe Super Paper Mario I'll maybe grant you @bluemage1989. However the ones after that? Color Splash, Sticker Stars, and so forth? No I don't believe those are superior to Super Mario RPG.
