Topic: Is ID Software developing Metroid Prime 4?

Alright. Be kind with my madness please and thank you, por favor...mantengase alejado de las puertas.

After Metroid Prime 4 was announced and Retro's name was not attached to it, like many Metroid fans I started thinking of who could be making it. Statements made it sound like a dev team was put together specifically for Metroid Prime 4; EuroGamer saying the game is in good hands, with series' producer Kensuke Tanabe; and Trinen saying it's being made by a "talented new development team."

To me that is still kind of ambiguous. It's totally possible that Nintendo amassed a whole new team in Japan for it, but I just don't think it's entirely likely. Especially considering that Metroid Prime is a first-person game, and is considered more of a western title than eastern, and Japan isn't really well known for its first person titles. It's possible, not saying it isn't. This is all conjecture, so I really have no basis to make these statements other then, "HEY WOULDN'T IT BE COOL IF..." to get people on my side of the line. And it's not like Nintendo hasn't collaborated with other devs when making Metroid games, and Nintendo has generally been doing that more often with all their IPs.

So I purchased Doom on Steam shortly after E3. I've played the original Doom back when I was a kid, but not 2 or 3. The first thing that hit me about the game was that it reminded me of Metroid Prime. The sound design, the silent protagonist, the alien(hell-inspired I guess) landscapes and enemy design. Sure it's brutal. It's gory, and there's a lot of heavy metal (not unlike space pirate theme playing when those suckers show up), but there was this ethereal similarity to Metroid Prime that I couldn't shake. Anyone who's played it (or will play it), knows what I'm talking about.

So I did some research and discovered that Retro Studios had lost some employees to ID Software. Most notably, Mike Wikan who left for ID in 2011 for lead game designer. I'm not doing more research into this because it's boring But that might explain why Doom kind of feels like Metroid Prime.

So as I was playing Doom, I started to think about ID software being the developer behind Metroid Prime 4. At the time it was known that Skyrim was coming to Switch, so there was a relationship between Bethesda and Nintendo. That was the extent of my hunch. I googled to see if any other fans were thinking the same thing to find that no one was. So I kept it to myself...

Until yesterday during the direct. Bethesda is bringing both Doom and Wolfenstein to Switch. As other fans were excited about the third party support, my mind went back to the gutter, hoping ID might be really making Metroid Prime 4. I mean. Sure. This seemingly partnership between Bethesda and Nintendo doesn't mean that they are collaborating on a game, but since when has Bethesda published a game on a Nintendo system? They had that dumb racing game on Wii, but that's all I can remember (not doing research. Deal). This unspoken thing between them, could it be something more?

I did some more research today (so boring), and found that ID hasn't announced their next game yet. There was a few postings for positions some time after Doom released, and people seem to think it's Quake because the posting mentions "Doom and Quake" as being famed credits of ID Software.

So yeah. I'm stuck here torturing myself over the prospect of ID making Metroid Prime 4 (really the only Western studio I'd trust with it, other than Retro), and I realize I'm in a room by myself, and that I will be disappointed when it's announced as someone else, and no one will know why I'm disappointed, or share that grief with me.

Welcome to my madness everyone. I'm shipping this so hard right now. So sorry if I got a few on the bandwagon of numero-uno to share in with my inevitable disappointment.

I'm going to say no.

But I am going to make a prediction: you'll be able to get a Samus skin in Doom. Whether that's by scanning amiibo or otherwise I'm sure it'll be there.

Yup. Tanabe said "a new talented team". While id Soft is full of talented people, I'd hardly call them "new". Sounds like a new in-house team to me.

@LUIGITORNADO I've no idea, but I found your post thoroughly entertaining and your thinking seems perfectly reasonable.

Funny. I was just about to say the same thing. I also really enjoyed reading your(OP) post.

So I don't care either way. I've had my share of fun.

Y'all are putting a lot of stock in that phrase 'a talented new team' meaning an in-house team, but it doesn't have to be at all. It could be a collaboration project between Nintendo staff and outsiders, it could be nearly all outsiders but with some leadership from Tanabe.

The word 'team' doesn't get us any closer to knowing who's developing it, other than it's not just one person.

Genuinely hadn't noticed it wasn't Retro. I just assumed it was them.

So what the hell have they been doing since Tropical Freeze?

It's dangerous to go alone! Stay at home.

As the Mike Wikan in question I can say that to the best of my knowledge id software is Not developing MP4. Sorry guys! I would put money that Tanabe-san is working with an unknown or lesser known studio.

At this point if Retro Studios doesn't deliver something that makes 100% of heads explode, people are going to be disappointed in some way, big or small, even if it turns out to be really amazing lol.

That said, I believe Nintendo said a new internal team was making MP4, so...

Good theory though. Very imaginative.

Metroid Prime and ID Software sound like 2 great tastes that don't go great together.

Non-binary, demiguy, making LPs, still alive

That's a helluv a coincidence, man.

You worked on Metroid Prime. You are my hero regardless where you work and don't work now.

...but thanks for putting my mind at ease. In a different reality I guess.

@gcunit The way the sentence is worded carries that implication. Contextually, "team" here does sound a lot like "in-house team". If someone other than Nintendo was in charge (or even if it's a collaboration a la Other M), "developer" would be the more accurate word, since it would separate Nintendo from the people developing the game better.

In any case, don't they list the devs in charge of all upcoming game in their finantial reports? We might know who's developing it sooner than later.

@MarcelRguez I think that's projecting. I'm not sure what part of the context makes it sound one way or the other. The context is a Nintendo press release about a Nintendo game in development, with a Nintendo staff member holding a lead role within the development team. Concluding that it's an in-house team is an understandable assumption to make, but it's an unsafe assumption to make, and we all know what happens if we assume things... rofl rofl pmsl roflrofllol omg icsrofl

Clearly it's a Nintendo IP and Nintendo staff will have a lead role, but that's it, that's all we can reasonably deduce for now.

@gcunit Hey, I'm a linguist. Analizing this stuff is my bread and butter, give me some credit. It's an assumption for sure (maybe the wording is Bill's and not Tanabe's), but it always is to some degree.

@gcunit I think it's also important to notice that the developer for Prime 4 is listed as ''Nintendo'', whereas a game like Yoshi specifically states ''Good-Feel''. As far as we know, and judging from their wording, I think the safe assumption is to assume they are working on it themselves. There's currently no reason to assume an outsourced team is working on it, or specifically ID Software.

And yes, while it is true we don't know what ID Software is working on, that doesn't mean it's some kind of big secret project. Remember, Bethesda doesn't announce games until they're almost done.

@Dezzy It has been rumoured that Retro is working on a new IP. They managed to pitch a new idea to Nintendo and Nintendo approved. I've also heard they may be big enough to be working on two games, but we shall see how that turns out.
