Topic: Switch doesn't turn off

I have some problems with my switch and I have not been able to find a solution to any fo them anywhere on the internet...
The first problem I have is this:
When I hold down the "power button" nothing happens. I've tried to hold it down for over a minute but still nothing happened.

That means I cant restart or reset it in order to fix my second problem that is this:

I cant connect to my wifi at home. I have both 2,4 g and 5g and have tried both with no luck. Things I've tried so far (for both 2,4 g and 5g):

  • written password several times.
  • went to each wifis settings and changed "connect to a hidden Network" from off to on.
  • Putting the console on airplane mode, turning it off, and then trying to connect to my wifi.
  • went to the wifi settings and pressed "Delete settings", rewrote the password.

PS. all other electronics can connect to the wifi. Did also try using my phone as a "hotspot" which my switch connected with no problem. My software is also up-to-date

You have to make sure the wifi password is compatible, I'm not sure which one doesn't work though maybe TKIP or whatever the incompatible one is, search for that and i hope you figure that one out, good luck

It's less than a year old, get it back to the retailer and get a new one.

@AndreHjordt Not sure why it not coming on. Are you sure it's charged? If the battery completely at zero then it needs a few minutes to charge up a couple of percent before it will turn on. If it's not that then I recommend disconnecting both power and HDMI cables from dock AND from TV and power socket. Leave off for a few minutes. Connect cables again and then with Switch undocked, hold down power button for 12 seconds. Then dock Switch and hope it comes on. If not try exact same again but hold down power while Switch is docked. I get this info from Nintendo trouble shooting. Worked for me and another user on here in past.

As for not connecting to WiFi, you're probably having same issue I had. Another user on here also had same issue and I replied to them with this comment below, it also worked for them. Good luck!

" I had this issue myself. I had to go into my routers settings and change the security type it was using. It turned out the router was using a security type called WPA - TKIP which the Switch doesn't accept, even though my Wii U and every other device I have did. So I accessed the routers settings, changed the security type to a Switch friendly one, WPA 2 - AES I think it was and then thankfully my router appeared in the connections list. If it doesn't show automatically, you might need manually change the Switch security settings to match the routers.
It could be something different that's preventing yours from showing up but it's worth checking. First thing to do is get into your router settings. To do that, just type your IP address into your browser search bar and it should take you to your routers log in page. Once in you should find the security type settings easy enough but be careful not to change anything else.
Also, if you do end up changing the security type, every other device you have will need to be reconnected again.
Hope this works for you."

@AndreHjordt
Try to work with your router's options. Check the router doesn’t have a firewall or gateway that is preventing the Switch from connecting to the internet, the console is notoriously fickle.
Maybe port forwarding could help you, here is a Nintendo link for that:
http://en-americas-support.nintendo.com/app/answers/detail/a_...

If that doesn’t work, try to get in contact with Nintendo to explain the problem, so they can guide you with a more detailed solution.

As Titus said, too, the Switch is also compatible with more modern security standards, so old keys in TKIP won’t be recognized... and if you manage to fix the issue and connect, I’ve heard the Switch gets better signal from the 2.4 signal than from the 5g.

I have a chronic lack of time, for everything.

Now playing: Okami HD, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

I agree and support this idea.

These guys are right. If the power button isn't working, odds are you are gonna have other problems. Take it back and get it swapped.

First of all.
Sorry for the late respons, had some irl stuff that needed attention...

And thanks for the quick replies really appreciated

It seems like the wifi works fine now. My wifi just had a "bad day" since the rest of the household also had some problems with it.

When it comes to the "power menu" not showing up I might refund it like many of you suggested. Luckely my switch is only 2 weeks old and have no damages. I am very afraid of letting the battery run dry or "kill" the switch, if the only means of turning it back on is using the "power buttun" since it have showed signs of not responding.

@AndreHjordt Seriously, if the power button is really not working, you should return it. Do it while you can before the warranty runs out.

The problem is just that the delivery took so long that the warranty ran out while they were sending it. It took over two weeks before it came...

But do you think I can still get a new one since it came from under a week ago?

@AndreHjordt The warranty shouldn't start before you actually get it. Also, I think if you reached out to where you bought it, or more likely, nintendo themselves, they would fix it for you no problem, or at least switch it out for a new one.

@AndreHjordt (whoops forgot to write the message), back in June or July I posted a thread somewhere (too lazy to search it) about a REALLY weird power state my Switch went into while running Ultra Street Fighter II. It wouldn't restart, it wouldn't turn on, I kept turning it on with the power button and it would just idle and time out.....I spent an hour trying to fix it. Nothing worked, then suddenly it worked (it was a software error state....once i got it working it's been, knock wood, fine since.)

If the power button physically doesn't actually do anything though it may really be faulty hardware. No on/off if you tap it? No menu pops up if you hold it a few seconds? And no power off if you hold it a long time? If the physical button is broken...yeah...you need a repair or return....that button is too useful to leave broken.

@oorwullie The reason TKIP isn't supported is that basically nothing should really be supporting TKIP. It was an interim solution because WEP was a screen door on a submarine and they needed SOMETHING that actually pretended to be secure while they worked on standardizing WPA. So they brought out TKIP and called it "WPA", and then came out with WPA and called it....WPA, and then had to differentiate by calling them WPA-TKIP and WPA-AES, though now we're on WPA2 which removes most of the confusion. But WPA-TKIP was deprecated in 2009, so it's a security protocol that's been out of date for almost a decade now. Switch did the right thing not supporting it for backward compatibility considering it's a device that acts as a credit card terminal... It's kind of disturbing that iOS and Android DO support it.

There is also WPA (Enterprise) that most consumer devices don't support (but a lot of high-end routers and phones support) that could be turned on. The enterprise version requires a RADIUS auth server and obviously things like Switch don't support it.

Okay, this is weird.

The bottom apparently works now... When I pressed it fairly hard down...

Should I still see if I can turn it in for a new one, or is it normal that the bottom needs to be pressed (to what I think) unnecessary hard down before it works?
