Backwards Compatibility is important. To be able to continue to play your purchased games on newer hardware is important.
If the rumor about the Nintendo NX using a smaller "Cartridge" based format, is true then I don't know how they make it backwards compatible with the Wii U...?
I expect NX to be a clean slate for Nintendo. So, no backwards compatibility at all (barring VC).
BC is important to a degree, but if it makes it difficult to take the hardware leaps and shifts needed to progress, then good riddance. Just imagine what Wii U could have become if Nintendo wasn't stuck with old PPC 750 tech to accomodate full Wii BC.

Downloadable games could be BC still, even if that is unlikely with the rumored Specs
People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.
I don't think they know what Backwards Compatibility means...

Not unless Nintendo does something really bizarre.
What do you mean?
Well, the only thing that would make me "appreciate" the Wii U more would be if Nintendo announced the games I want from them for it, which would be decidedly bizarre if they're launching a new console in a few months. Then, what could make me buy a Wii U would be Nintendo releasing the better version of New Zelda on it, which would also be ridiculous for the same reasons.

If it's to be believed that NX will use Tegra and card-based media, then the chances of backwards compatibility are next to zilch. My guess is that, over time, Nintendo will port a collection of classic Wii U titles to the eShop for download.
Remember, the company has reiterated that NX is not a replacement for Wii U in the near future, but an entirely new category of product. It will take time for them to create that new customer base, and convince Wii U owners to part with their cash for this new system.
Also, several Wii U titles have the potential to actually be re-written for NX with modifications and improvements, with would negate the need to 'port' them directly.
@Emperor-Palpsy Nintendo always say that when they launching a new system. When they launched the DS they said that the Gameboy Advance was going to be a "third pillar."
I don't think so. I mean, the WiiU is b/c with the Wii but I don't think I've played any Wii games on my WiiU - despite owning plenty.
I think I'll just be keeping my WiiU when the NX releases anyway. Assuming that the rumors are true, it doesn't sound like the NX is going to take up a lot of space by the TV, so hopefully I'll have room for both without the set-up looking cluttered.
Looking forward to: No More Heroes: Travis Strikes Again

@Haru17 Hahah "It's a third pillar....................................with a gba slot."
Well, eventually they phased that GBA Slot out, didn't they? Obviously they didn't do it right away, because they wanted to make you feel comfortable with the new handheld, at first.
I hope beyond hope that the NX just moves the heck on from the Wii brand. I want it to be a clean slate. If people wanna play Wii stuff, they can buy a Wii and/or Wii U for like 100 bucks or whatever it'll drop to once the NX is out. I'm sick of this "backwards compatibility is a NEED, not a WANT" movement that's been going on.
Yes, a lot of modern consoles have had BC because it was convenient and the tech between their systems was similar. But Nintendo has stated time and again that the NX is NEW. BC is NOT a need - it's a want - and I'd rather Nintendo spent their time making awesome games for it rather than eating into their development time trying to get Skyword Sword to work on a THIRD FREAKING MACHINE lol
I don't understand the question, because the NX won't be backwards compatible. Unless you want to argue that the NX is going to be their fourth system that will be PPC based.
I could be BC with the 3DS, but it won't be with the Wii U. I suspect that they'll maybe port some Wii U games over. We may see emulation up to GameCube and maybe even Wii, but that's about it.
Is it a big problem? Maybe? I agree with DefHalan that it would be neat if your console could play games from previous systems, but I don't feel like this will be a huge issue with the NX. If the people didn't buy a Wii U for its games, then I doubt they're going to purchase them for NX. Besides, the successful games will
most likely get a sequel anyway.
...shouldn't it depend on what it is? I mean, no one ever complained that the Virtual Boy wasn't backwards compatible...or that the N64 wasn't backwards compatible with the Virtual Boy...
@rallydefault I agree that if Nintendo are to move forward, they simply have to put the Wii legacy behind them. Continuing Wii compatibility will not only confuse customers (even more than what the Wii U did), but also prevent more innovation from occurring.
This isn't, however, to say that NX can't adopt some of the Wii's best features. I still believe that Nintendo will release a controller that is, essentially, an updated version of the Wiimote, with a built in rechargeable battery, slimmer design and perhaps even removable faceplates. They will no doubt offer an online service that improves upon Miiverse, using rich media from gameplay, and even extend the functionality/appearance of Miis themselves.
