Hardware Spec: x86 architecture; same power as PS4/Xbone; costs-savings with much smaller HD (80-100GB, leaving it up to the consumer to expand storage, as they did with the Wii U); proprietary discs again, no ability to play DVDs/bluray (which doesnt matter as much as it use to, thanks to digital distribution and streaming.) Obviously, a home console.
Controller: Gamecube-style pad with modern features: speakers, mic, gyro, motion-sensing, amiibo reader on back
Unique Feature #1: 3D
Unique Feature #2: amiibo
Unique Feature #3: free online/miiverse

What exactly would be the point of this system? What would it bring to the industry? It's the same power as two systems already on the market. There seem to be fewer conventional features, and virtually nothing original is added to the platform. If I bought this system, I would feel like I'm being forced to buy a gimped PS4 just because there are some Nintendo games exclusive to it.

Whatever it is, Nintendo [accidentally?] revealed that NX is a home console, or it seems so at least, if this statement is true. When asked about Metroid Prime, and why the new Metroid Prime game isn't on the Wii U, Kensuke Tanabe said the following:

''If we started for Wii U now, it would likely take three years or so. So it would likely now be on Nintendo's NX console.''

To me that confirms that the NX is indeed a home console, despite my expectations.

It would seem so. It could also be a hybrid, but I doubt it.

how about we wait for things to be confirmed before we start attacking each other? nevermind, forgot I was on the internet

People keep saying the Xbox One doesn't have Backwards Compatibility.

But...but...but if we didn't jump to conclusions and/or attack each other there would be no point to our existence,

Someone please think of the internets.

Yeah, I'm almost hoping that it turns out to be handheld just so I don't feel like total idiot.

It's good that somebody finally put a bullet in the console/handheld debate. However, it sucks that Metroid isn't currently in development.

If we were wrong we were wrong. Although I wouldn't take a quote that has been translated from Japanese as gospel. The reason we're jumping on this is because of the particular way it is being phrased. And given how huge it'd be if that's actually what he meant? I'm sceptical. Seems a bit odd for such a senior Nintendo figure to be just blurting that out given how careful they've been about not saying much. Especially given that he went on to say....

"I'm the producer of the Metroid Prime series, and [Metroid series co-creator] Yoshio Sakamoto is the one in charge of Metroid itself. I'm not sure when he's planning on making such an announcement so I can't speak for him."

So guys, you can start acting smug about how right you were when and only when they make it 100% clear in some sort of official capacity. Or at least if things like those above start to come out regularly from the mouths of Iwata, Reggie etc. There's a LOT of things being said at E3 and we found the one translation that "confirmed" it. That ain't confirmation.

Assuming the translation is correct, I'm quite disappointed and not because of I was one of the "it's a handheld" people but because I'm greatly anticipating the 3DS successor especially if it's the big leap into PS3/360 territory I'm hoping for. The N3DS does nothing for me as a "tide over" upgrade because NOA won't release the model I want anyway. :-/

Yeah, if the NX is a home console the fact that we'll only have the 3DS as our portable for a good while longer? That's far more disappointing than them moving onto new hardware for the Wii U. Means we'll all be spending more money overall on hardware and be getting less of an improvement out of it.

Anyways, I wouldn't rule out miss-translation entirely yet. I mean have a look at this article here:

"It was not an apology," said Reggie Fils-Aime. "It was not a statement about the content we're showing, essentially it was an 'I hear you' message." The not-apology, the message, was a tweet sent out by Iwata seemingly in reaction to a tidal wave of negative online reaction to the company's E3 Nintendo Direct this week.

One translation, by NeoGaf user Cheesemeister has Iwata saying this:
"Thank you for watching. We take opinions of this year's Digital Event seriously and will work to better meet your expectations."

But Fils-Aime says that translation isn't exactly right and misses some of the context. "Mr. Iwata is in Japan and what he's trying to do is help explain to consumers in Japan what's going on at E3," he said. "The correct translation of his message was: 'Thank you for your feedback. We hear you and we are committed to continuing to meet your expectations,' was essentially his message.

Sadly it isn't about what is actually said but how the press twists words to create click-bait articles...

And it's not just disappointing from a hardware standpoint but software too. We've already had Pokemon, Smash, Zelda, Animal Crossing, more Zelda, Mario in just about every form, Kirby, Fire Emblem, Style Savvy, etc. There's not too much else they can do and it shows in the upcoming 1st party line up. If the 3DS has a longer than average life span then are multiplayer spin offs, ports, and designer expansions what we have to look forward to? I don't buy too many games but if it weren't for Project Mirei DX, Yokai Watch, and Story of Seasons this year would be rather bleak for me.

So yeah, I'm really banking on that mistranslation lol.

For sure. I mean if you list out the parts of that quote about the Wii U, NX and Metroid plainly it doesn't say much. That if a Metroid started development for Wii U now it'd take three years to finish. And that if they were to take three years to finish a game they'd be looking at releasing it on the NX instead. It doesn't say that they haven't started development on Metroid it just states a hypothetical. It doesn't say what the NX is it just says that if they were to start three years of development on a game today they'd want it to be on the NX.

It's only in that particular phrasing that they all come together to make it sound like:

  • They're not working on a Metroid for the Wii U
  • They have stopped development on Wii U and are moving to NX
  • The NX is therefore a Wii U successor

............ that may well be the case but one translated piece of text isn't enough of a confirmation. Especially when it was followed by: "Yoshio Sakamoto is the one in charge of Metroid itself. I'm not sure when he's planning on making such an announcement so I can't speak for him"

I think I've evolved my thinking on what kind of platform NX might be:

(N)intendo (X) Activision/third parties
Nintendo X mobile
Nintendo X playstation
Nintendo X Xbox
Nintendo X PC

This is their transformation. They're taking Nintendo everywhere games are. It's a wild thought, and I haven't figured out how hardware comes into the picture so that no matter what your console or gaming platform is you can play Nintendo, but I'm thinking Nintendo has figured it out!

*if that's a thought too wild and unwieldy, then forgive my post. But I think it solves some problems about Nintendo's future, in my strange mind at least

Given they said it was a dedicated hardware platform I think that's unlikely. Also what they've said doesn't rule out a hybrid but I think that'd be too much of a task in terms of the tech. My thinking at this point has only changed from what I was saying earlier in terms of date. I still think the NX is a portable but it seems much more likely that they're moving quicker than I expected. I'm thinking the NX will be a portable and it'll be released in late 2016. With the next home console coming out in late 2017. So they'll both be out within a couple of years from now.

Which, if I'm right here, would mean that at some point between now and this time next year we'll get announcements for the last bunch of the Wii U's games. But it also means that this year we did infact get the last of the 3DS' games to be announced. I don't think we'll see Metroid coming out for the Wii U but I expect there to be some sort of mid-tier swan song. Zelda obviously for next year alongside probably something like Animal Crossing.

Though this is all speculation, I could easily be wrong. If I was to guess how I'm wrong it'd be more with which order they're being replaced and the timing. But I think any predictions that have some crazy theory about hyrbids and services are likely wrong. Because what is possible with the tech and what they've 100% confirmed the NX is rule those things out.

@skywake I'm with you on your predictions, they are close to my conservative predictions as they sound like Nintendo. But maybe a little too Nintendo. I think NX will be portable hardware and always subscribed to that scenario over a new home console. But I'm thinking the hardware is going to do something very different and unexpected, something not closed off to the gaming world beyond their hardware as they traditionally have. Something like what phones can be as an appendage to really anybody's platform be it a PC or console or even other mobile devices. Not specifically that, but a similar idea of trans-platform connectivity. I just think there has to be more to their hardware this time than a system that only deals with Nintendo developed hardware and TV's.

Now that I think about it, if Nintendo is planning on having greater software parity as they have said in the past, he could absolutely mean that he would be developing Metroid Prime 4 for their upcoming software platform that would be compatible with both their next handheld and console.
