I've played a bit of both, and honestly... ya. Chrono Trigger is just in a whole other league.
But I suppose if we never played games unless they're better than similar titles in backlog, we'd never play anything new at all lol

As @ogo79 said, the SNS-RZ-USA is a prime giveaway that it's not a legit retail cart.
And yes, he is (usually) always right, and he is (almost) the sexiest gamer out there (not counting me) ;)

Personally, I got really into it. I'm really random with RPG's, too: sometimes I love them and become addicted (FF9, Eternal Sonata), and sometimes I can't bring myself to finish 25% of the story (FF7, Blue Dragon).
But I loved this one. Disclaimer: There is really NOTHING new about this game. It's very retro in what it tries to do:
-Combat is turn-based, ATB (basically, with a small twist that you can "save" up turns for more powerful attacks)
-Spells and skills are very standard RPG fare
-Beginning is a tad slow, you get to the overworld, you eventually get an airship
-Environments are NOT very diverse. Lots of snow and lots of techy-looking dungeons.
-Sound is EXCELLENT, I think. A couple really touching piano pieces in there.
Very classic all-around. Took me a little over 20 hours to beat with a bit of side exploration, but I still need to complete a few of the legendary weapon quests.
I thought the story and characters were pretty good, though I am a sucker for this type of plot line (think FF10). Some of the characters are better-developed than others, but I liked it. I will say, it does feel almost like a "mini RPG," like not a full Final Fantasy game. And I think the devs were going for that. It's obviously not quite as long as a standard "full" game, but I believe it's on purpose. I found the difficulty to be just fine, maybe a tad on the easy side. There are some high-stakes boss battles that set you back quite a bit if you lose. I did do some grinding, though enemies don't level up with you, so low-level areas become useless for grinding after awhile.
I haven't played it, my only problem is that it's not out on retail here in EU, so I'm still considering importing.
I know it has a snow themed world, and that wouldn't be a problem as well. For some people it would lack variety. For me it is variety as I have never played an RPG story in a completely cold and icy world.
The piano tracks are fantastic and remind me of Chrono Trigger. This and the fact it's an RPG are the main reasons I want the game.
I think this is the perfect game for Winter, so if it's not out in the EU by then I look into import prices.
to me the story is a bit emotional.. (seems like they take a leaf out of FFX ??) very similar to FFX story.
great music soundtrack but it's too repetitive. You will get sick halfway through the game listening to the piano music.
lack of variety of monsters - bascially there are quite a lot with color swap and stronger stats.
techs/double combos/triple combos - too many ( need unique, cool looking tech/double/triple combos) many are just a variation of it. most are lackluster in damage.
Accessories - way too many ( most are not that useful, only a handful are useful)
good thing i like about this jrpg is your weapons are never obsolete, you can upgrade them to their max potential unlike many other jrpgs, you will ditch the old ones for better newer weapons.
overall the difficulty is too easy, i one or two shot the final boss. not much end game content..
only thing left to do is to 100% snow book chronicles and mix max all your characters (which i feel pointless to do so, since there is not much end/post game content to tackle) unless you feel good to do millions of damage to the monsters.
