A: They're cartridges, I have little to no interest in collecting discs due to the various issues involved with them.

This is very important. I have a single PS1 game that plays in my PS3, and even if you handle it extremely carefully, the disc will still become hard to read after some time.

I've never been one to re-buy games, but I would do it on the Switch since it uses cartridges. However, I would probably only start to collect once the games cost 10 dollars. I would still of course buy games that I really want for full price. Games that somewhat interest me, or games that I already have on other systems, I would wait to buy those.

Hated the idea of going digital back when I had the Gamecube and it was rumoured to go that way. I had 130 games for that system, loved it dearly but damn the space it took up. I have inherited hoarding traits from family members so whilst its not everyones cup of tea, I am embracing going all digital, much as Id love to collect them physically.

I'd probably only go physical for the first party / exclusives if I were to collect.

@Masurao That's why I'm glad they cracked the Wii U. I recently learned that there are enough passionate fans in the world that the original 1977 release of Star Wars has been restored in high quality by splicing and editing from various sources. It was never released in good quality apparently. Anyway, if that can happen, then I'm also certain there are enough passionate fans who make back-ups of various patches, software upgrade, etc. Sure, some will be lost, but I think there's a way to preserve most of it.

I think discs have improved quite a bit as far as durability and quality.

I will never do something like buying every game for a console or every game of a particular type or something like that. I still have all my favourite PS2, Gamecube and Nintendo Wii games (at least my favourites amongst the ones I played, maybe there is something I would like but I never tried it) and I would like to have my favourite PS1 games as well but I gave away most of them back then and now I regret it.
But I collect games I like only because I like to collect things I like and I don't think there really is a valid reason to do so unfortunately. Because eventually everything gets broken, there will be a day when you will lose a thing in one way or another. It's a very sad thing but even if you are able to keep your collection in perfect condition you will lose everything when you will die and that's something one can't avoid.
I'd like that there was a more valid reason to collect things but unfortunately in the end is pointless, but it's just something that I want too much to give up on it.
Now on Switch I think that collecting physical games is even more pointless because of two reasons: updates and the fact that sometimes digital only games are even better than many retail games, so what's the point in collecting something when there is a different category of games that can be even better and sometimes it actually is?
The best way to collect physical games on Switch is probably to wait until new editions get released (things like Player's choice, Playstation Platinum, Nintendo selects and so on) because that way at least I would hope that's the updated version of the game that gets released so I would buy something effectively more valuable in terms of its functionality

I think those old ps1 cd roms were off worse quality - but cartridges are definitely better, much better.

@LuckyLand: No collector ever wanted "Platinum" or "Selects" series in their collection. These are second run games (re-releases that have never been updated) and they all have that alternate (horrible) boxart. Real collectors avoid them like the pest.

For example, a used original Mario Party 9 (Wii) in mint condition goes for 40~60 bucks. But the Selects version is around 10~20 bucks new (and for me personally it's not even worth a cent). You need the original first print runs. If your collection reaks of Platinum and Selects all you do is scaring away collectors from your cheap looking collection.

I think we all have our priorities and collecting is as subjective as it gets. I really couldnt care less about the looks of the games - of course, the first prints look way better, but to me its ultimately about playing the game. Its more of having a library of games that I can choose from, play and have fun. Collecting for the sake of collecting has never been a thing for me. And its not even about the value for me as I dont sell any games.

It's not subjective as I'm not talking about people who make their own little personal collection. I'm talking from a hardcore collector perspective, I'm talking about people that cultivate the highest possible value with their collections. There's a huge difference between these two kinds of collectors.

If you just want to play a game and don't care about the box or collector's value, then of course you can buy whatever version you see fit. There are tons of cartridge/disc hoarders that don't have the original boxes. But these collections have zero value to me and many other collectors. A general rule is that you cut the total value of your collection in half (at best; usually games are losing even more value) when they're not complete in their boxes.

Collectors I've talked to say Gamecube has by far the worst discs. PS1 has okay discs, but are sensitive to scratches. PS2 discs seems to be the best. Regardless, the type of storage the Switch uses is infinitely better than any disc.

I’m no collector, but since picking up my Switch I do keep buying more games than I can play. There is just something about the system that makes you want everything on it.

@SKTTR of course Playstation Platinum and Nintendo Player's choice were not updated, console games were not updated at all back then, consoles did not even have memories to install patches, but on Switch it is different, so we cannot know, games get patches so maybe when Switch re-releases will arrive the new editons will be already updated. I hope so I think it would be a good thing. If it won't happen collecting physical games on Switch will actually prove to be even more pointless as I said, except for those games that are already at least ok (both in their functionality and in their contents) on their first version. For example Mario Kart is a great game to have in its physical version, ARMS is somewhat ok but not the best choice (first version works fine but additional content is released with updates) and L.A. Noire is completely useless

I used to be a ripple user like you, then I took The Arrow in the knee

SKTTR

@LuckyLand Well, if they really release updated versions in something like "Nintendo Selects" editions, it could have an impact on the collector's value for sure. But for now that's speculation.
