Topic: How much space should I want to have free on the system storage for my Switch?

I am asking since I am trying to figure out how much storage I can use. Right now I have just over 4GB available, I would like to know if I would be fine using up another 2GB or so. Space is getting really limited on my memory card so I am trying to do whatever I can.

The Switch is future-proofed up to 2 TB for a micro sd card.

The largest at the moment (I believe) is 400 GB, which costs around $225 on Amazon.

If you're asking if 4 GB of free space on the hardware is enough, I couldn't say. It depends on what games you like playing. If you're playing smallish, indie games, 4 GB will be enough to get by for a little while. But ever since the launch of the console, there've been retail games that require more storage space than the system offers. So upgrading your micro sd card is basically a necessity.

@Magician I was mainly just wondering if the system storage needs a certain amount of space free to function. I know on my PS4 for example I need to have around 30GB free at all times just to have it work right.

@JayJ I can't say anything about the Switch but my Wii, Wii U and 3DS have worked with no storage space left. So I would assume the Switch is the same.

I would think that 4GB is okay as long as you don't download a lot of games or DLC. Just make sure you have enough space for game updates because you need those for online features

@Kimyonaakuma Yeah I know my Wii U worked well with next to no free space, I think there must the some space reserved for the OS on Nintendo devices that doesn't show up on the data management.

I right now have a 200GB SD card, but I am down to about 4GB free on that now, with only 4GB free on my system storage as well. I got a lot of the big downloads out of the way that I was anticipating this year, but I figure it is nice to have some storage free for more games that come along since I love to pick up the occasional indie game and collecting the ACA games has sorta been my thing.

I want to eventually upgrade to a 512GB card, but those are very new and expensive right now.

The system memory is mainly used for storing save data, so I wouldn't fret too much about it.

The Switch has 32GB of system memory but only about 26GB of that is actually available for downloading games and storing save data on. I assume the remaining ~6GB is used for the OS and whatnot so you should be fine.

probably 100MB per game for save data(some are less some are more but just to be safe)

so in your example leaving 2GB free that should be good for 20-30 games with of saves

I personally asked myself the same question and went with 5GB because I have a 256GB SD card so I will at some point have lots of games on the SD that will require system space for saves.

I have about 600 MB left on the system memory and I can assure you my Switch runs fine. You're definitely good to use up another 2GB or so.

Just as a rule of thumb, one should always allow for each game and the system a few hundred meg for updates so half a gig to a full gig is a good idea.
