Well we all know Pokemon's never getting real towns. Chrissakes, the freakin' golden gate bridge in Unova lead into a forest. I'm just saying that, with how 'faithful' Game Freak usually is with remasters, I doubt Kanto is somewhere we'd really want to go when all was said and done. Probably gonna use the old level design even.

Maybe... the old games still exist, and if they do a proper remake, then I don't mind them going all out. Johto and Hoenn look great in their official artwork too. It's just a shame you don't ever see the region like this...
That looks like a cool game, just not something achievable on a Pokemon development cycle.
And this is the problem, Game Freak wants to cheap out and stick with small studios in a 1-3 year dev cycle. You really can't accomplish much under those constraints in this day and age. They're probably going to learn the hard way that it takes much more work to make a quality game on an HD console, but until then we're probably not going to get anything impressive out of them.
Unless the next game is gutter tier garbo, I'm guessing it'll be an average Pokemon game and many people will love and praise it regardless. So I doubt they'll learn any "lesson the hard way". Like as much as people around here dislike SM, it's not my favorite either, I know many people who consider it the best in the series despite its numerous flaws. Obviously this is all based on my lone observations and is probably a bit exaggerative, but this is my guess.
Edit: I think I'm expecting an XY sort of thing, tbh
I wonder if the "2018 or later" release date for Pokemon Switch only exists to try and tempt people to buy Switch early with there actually being no intention of releasing in 2018. I mean surely Game Freak would suffer the same problems Nintendo did in the Wii U era.
I had no problem with the regional variants for the most part, pandering or not. It's also not a new concept since we did get regional variants of Shellos/Gastrodon back in Gen IV. These rely on the very real phenomenon of adaptation, though total type changes in some of those cases may be stretching it a bit (But lol, realism in a Pokemon game? )
I honestly would like to see more variants at some point. Knowing GF's record, this may not happen, but...maybe if the fans scream for it hard enough?
Currently playing: Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story + Bowser Jr's Journey, Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana (Switch)
I feel like it should be something they do more of especially since it's a reasonable alternative to brand new Pokemon to an already large national pokedex.

Considering that this is their first game in HD and the console market and they're trying to rush it out in 2 years, it probably will be. XY took 3 years to make, this is probably going to be worse.

And that's part of it, you'd think after seeing Nintendo struggle to push out games on the Wii U because of the jump to HD Game Freak would have the sense to take their time. Or conversely, Nintendo would step in and keep Game Freak from releasing an utter mess of a game. But even if it's delayed to 2019 it'll still be XY levels of mediocrity at best. It would take Game Freak until 2020/2021 to make a BotW/Odyssey tier game.
@-Green- You do know that every single game ever released has flaws right? You say "an XY sort of thing" like it's a bad thing. (Y's my personal favorite in the series)
There's having flaws and then there's being completely barebones to the point of coming off as cheap and lazy. XY (as well as the rest of the 3DS era games for that matter) is pretty much Pokemon's NSMB, we need Pokemon's Odyssey.
@Bolt_Strike Like I said in other threads, I'm not considering Pokemon going open world like BotW/Odyssey. Regarding Nintendo and the Wii U I'm looking more at stuff like Pikmin 3 not being a launch title, Tropical Freeze not being a 2013 game, etc. Holiday 2019 sounds about right for the next main series Pokemon game.
@Bolt_Strike The previous games were just as "barebones." You're speaking out of rose-tinted glasses. I've played EVERY gen and been around since the start so you can't just say I'm being bias. I thought X and Y were great games as do most people.
I've played every gen too, and XY was definitely barebones, the only older games that are as barebones as XY were RBY and GSC. The others all had more areas to explore, meatier sidequests and just more to do in general. XY there was almost nothing after you beat the Elite 4, just catch 3 extra legendaries, go to Kiloude City, and complete the Looker Bureau quest and that's basically it.
But it's not just about the games feeling barebones compared to past Pokemon games. It's also about them feeling barebones compared to other games on the hardware. The Switch is capable of much larger games and maps than the GBA or the DS or even the 3DS, so the games should feel like a dramatic evolution for the series. Hell, even the DS/3DS could run games like 64 and OoT which puts the likes of XY and SM to shame. Game Freak is simply so far behind the curve on this and when they're making the jump to console where the market expects large, lengthy, open ended games, a game like XY or SM is going to be less acceptable, they're going to feel like a preschool effort in comparison.
Considering that this is their first game in HD and the console market and they're trying to rush it out in 2 years, it probably will be. XY took 3 years to make, this is probably going to be worse
I'll reserve my judgment until they actually show it.
@-Green- The term, "average Pokemon game" is redundant. What exactly did the earlier generations did that was so mindblowing compared to the recent ones? Here's a hint, not much.
I'm not sure what you mean, I wasn't comparing previous Pok games to the newer ones, and I loved playing XY.
@-Green- My point was that I didn't get what you meant by "average" since every Pokemon game uses the same basic formula and all have received consistently great reception. In particular, the bit where you "everyone will praise it regardless" in gave off the impression that you thought no matter how "bad" it was, it'd still get good reviews. The bit where you mentioned most people here didn't like SM (although that's probably false and just an assumption based on what you read), I got the impression you felt the new games were lesser.
That’s what I meant by average. A normal main line Pokémon game. As for my impressions, I just get the general vibe that people around here on this site dislike SM. Could I be wrong, sure absolutely, but like I said that’s my guess.
