Hi All,

I have a bit of a dilemma. I can’t be the only one, but I guess the replies will answer that. - So before my daughter was born (1yrs old) I had a lot more spending money and bought games a lot. Probably too much. Now that money is tight I’ve glanced at my collection and am thinking about trading in a handful of games that just sit on the shelf. I almost get bothered as more and more time passes and they aren’t played, I know that sounds dumb but I do.

I’m not a true collector at all, I just used to buy a lot cause of wanting that new game feeling.

Should I part ways with the games that collect dust?

Not sure, but to list some.

Kirby Star Allies
Kirby Triple Deluxe
Kirby Planet Robobot
Kirby Extra Epic Yarn
DK Tropical Freeze
DK Country Returns
Skyrim/Switch
Trials Rising/Switch
Yoshi’s Crafted World
Super Mario Maker 2 (I don’t care to build and don’t care about created courses. Got it for story mode. So far I’m like I already have tons of Mario games and just see it as a remix of what I already have.

@CTmatic
Think again before you sell your games.
There are some titles might be you want to continue or replay again.
To avoid that situation again, before you buy games :
1. DO NOT ever buy games just because it's the newest / a lot of peoples bought it / most peoples like it / that game are trendy now. Buy the games that only really MATCHED with your genuine interest.
2. Find out the gameplay from Youtube if you unsure the gameplay quality so you can decide to buy that game or not after you watched from Youtube.
3. Knowing the genre also will help you to choose your best games.
4. Prioritize your urgent needs than your gaming hobby so you will not run out of your financial when you have something really urgent.

Think long and hard about what you might regret getting rid of. Later on down the road you might want to get a hold of them again and may end up paying more than you did the first time round.

Real talk though.... can’t you get rid of the kid? You could always make another one in a few years when your ready and don’t have to take important funds away from your precious game collecting!

@CTmatic I still have all my nintendo gamecube games I bought new .that's nearly 20 years ago that I started collecting them. They cost me about 25000 euro and then I got all the add-ons like a tv, broadband adaptor and modem, lot of different controllers, bongo drums for donkey konga, game boy player. Then the game boy advance cost me around the same . I don't think I'd sell them .i still play them alot. Even my spectrum games I have a couple of 1000 games 2 or 3 I think ,i still buy more of the same one's to keep . I know most games will last forever .but just in case I get extra ones when I have the money and my spectrum is 30 years old know.It still works . So if you ask me I would not sell them. You'll find you will wana play them again somtime. Problem be more money to buy them back again original hardware is really really starting to get very dear. but if your selling anything tell me I might buy some. GOOD LUCK

Lol, this is totally where I am in my life, but I totally support TC if he's ready for kids. I've regretted selling a few games (Melee, Double Dash, and few others that got WAY more expensive when I realized I should have kept them), but most of the games I've sold I don't regret. I always ask myself "will I play this again?" if yes, I keep it, if no, then I sell it or give it away. I do have a few collectors games I would never sell (Fire Emblem for Gamecube and Wii, seriously, the Amazon/Ebay prices are nuts).

@CTmatic As the parent of two girls, I would recommend not selling the games unless you are in financial trouble. I've regretted selling just about every game I sold back in the day, and even more so after my kids got old enough to appreciate them.

Today my daughters are both active gamers who not only fight over the Switch but also play on the 3DS regularly and appreciate the games I've kept from the Gamecube and Wii eras.

Your daughter will be old enough to play video games before you know it, and those Kirby games are especially good for budding gamers.

@R_Champ yeah it is later on when you’ve decided to collect again or build on your current one you think “why did I sell that!”.

It’s looking like OP is going to have to sell a kidney. 😅

Well, if you're pretty sure you're not going to play the games again, @CTmatic .... Might as well trade them in I do that with most physical games, once finished; I'll know which few I'll want to replay by then

@CTmatic having gone through a similar situation a little over a decade ago it comes down to priorities, and it sounds like you have yours in the correct order. I know it is hard, but trust me that investing the time, money and energy into your kids is worth so much more than having a collection of games on the shelf collecting dust. Before you realize it, your daughter will be a teenager and you will be left wondering where all the time went. And with the trends lately, odds are the best of those games will be re-released, remixed, or remastered at some point (probably multiple times). You can always go back later and play what you missed once this stage has passed.

I will say that there is no perfect way to handle this. For me, I set a console budget for myself that limits what I am willing to purchase. If a game I buy doesn't click, it gets finished (if possible) and then traded in. This makes me be a lot more selective in what I purchase now and focus on what I really enjoy.

Let the recent DS games voting article serve as a valid example. There's a lot of DS games out there, designed specifically for a dual screen experience. Darknhyt makes a good point about the number of remakes being released nowadays, but who knows if we'll ever see dual screen games made again? As such, to me it's important to preserve and grow my DS collection while I can.

You guys had me at blood and semen.

Put this way if those are the only games you own keep them unless you have many many then you could decide which you really want. But remember unless it's a wanted game the resale will be less then you paid for it.

@Ninfan you have how many Gamecube games?

Sakurai: Which is why I think we should forget about console wars and focus on what’s really important: enjoying the games themselves.
