Feel free to talk about any game in the Fire Emblem series. I wanted to create a thread about older games in the series since there already is one for Awakening and Fates. I believe I did see one forum about the series, but the last post was many years ago.

So who all has played the Japan only FE games and which ones?
I've been getting them all on Japanese VC recently and the only one I don't own is Mystery of the Emblem since I own the DS remake (got Dark Dragon and Sword of Light in a sale). I am currently playing through Gaiden, Binding Blade and Blazing Sword (I had previously stopped playing it when the NA release came).

I played and beat Gaiden, Monsho no Nazo, Seisen no Keifu as a teenager (yay emulation and a dictionary!) and went back and beat Fuin no Tsurugi in college after I beat Blazing Sword (I hate just calling it Fire Emblem). Played the rest of them in English except I have White Kingdom/Birthright in Japanese (not finished because I wanted to wait for the English version) and I started but have yet to finish Shin Monsho no Nazo...because backlog. Rekka no ken is my favorite still (I love the story and Lyndis is still my favorite Lord with Lucina as a strong second) but I'm partial to the Tellius games (that game duology was pure high drama) and of course I'm a fan of the 3ds games. Not done with Fates but I have beaten birthright in English and liked it very much. Working on Revelation and then I'll go back to Conquest. I've started #FE but haven't gotten very far because I've been on a fighting game binge.

I was never into Fire Emblem before Awakening mainly because I was just into platform games when I was young.

But having beaten Awakening, I'm sad that I never gotten into the series as early as possible. I'm having a blast with Conquest and I've yet to beat the game but I'm having a fun time so far with Conquest.

Of course having it played on Casual mode is what might have made me gotten into the series but I don't know about that because I played a bit of genealogy of holy war and I loved it from what bit I've played and I'm looking forward to going back into it.

You know.....I was gonna make a thread about Fire Emblem but I guess we have one right here...right now.

I would love Nintendo to keep pushing this series forward and really, this series definitely deserves such reputation.

But a quick question. Whenever you face the last chapter of any fire emblem game, how is it done so that no matter how many units you have or how much of stats you have gained, the player can still get the ending of the game no matter what?

Is it done in such a way that the games force you to start all over gain from the beginning just to beat the final boss right?

FE7 thus far is the first non-modern FE game I've completed, and honestly I think it was my favorite one to date. I'm looking forward to playing a patched version of FE6, as FE7 is clearly a prequel to it.

Started with Blazing Sword. I have dabbled in the prior games (made decent progress in Binding Blade), but I've mostly stuck with Western released games.

I'm somewhat biased towards the Advance games. Mostly due to the presence of the Magic Triangle. That's one thing that I disliked about Awakening; it's just "magic and slightly different magic". I like my divine and elder magic too.

That said, I've enjoyed pretty much every entry the West has gotten. Shadow Dragon did feel like a slightly weaker entry, but, that's what happens when you remake a Famicom game I guess. Still would've liked to get New Mystery of the Emblem though.

You know what would really be awesome? If they make a game where you can recruit all units from each game ever possible and marrying various units to give lots of variety in terms of stats. Yeah sure, you can get them as DLC but you can't really have support conversations in them and what not can you?

I really find the variety in Conquest very intriguing as the game really drives the tactics a lot more than any other Fire emblem game I think.

But I don't get why you can't have battle saves in classic mode though because I never let my units die in casual mode because I'm playing it as a console game rather than a handheld game because Conquest does make it like its suppose to be on console instead of handhelds.

@Ryu_Niiyama Blazing Sword was my first and is my favourite FE game. Unfortunately something happened to my cartridge and it won't save anymore so I lost all of my data... I had been waiting for the VC release for ever since GBA VC was announced. Since my cartridge wouldn't save I would sometimes close my DS and have it on the charger overnight when I wasn't playing. I made it all the way to Fargus, but wanted to see what would happen if I attacked him haha... I got a game over because of that.
I beat New Mystery earlier this year and I'm currently on the second part/chapter of Gaiden, 14x of Binding Blade and 22 of Blazing Sword. I started a hard mode file of #FE, but haven't played it a whole lot. (I think I'm still on the first chapter) With Fates I decided to wait partly due to the poor Canadian dollar, but I'm not sure if it made much of a difference. I decided to just get Conquest and Revelations, but I may eventually go through Birthright too. I really regret not getting Radiant Dawn, I never had a GameCube so I didn't get PoR. I ended up borrowing both games from my cousin and they are both one of my favourite FE games.

@Socar do you mean like what if your units are too weak to beat the game? I think it is possible to be forced to restart, but usually you should have some strong enough units and you will usually get a strong unit or two near the end. Blazing Sword was my first Fire Emblem game and I wasn't exactly that good at it. I didn't want to lose any units so I would still reset, but I didn't really train my units as evenly as I should have. I remember that one of my lords (Lyn) was level 20 and I could pretty much send her off on her own on some chapters, but I didn't train my other lords as much so they were kind of weak. My main units that I can remember who I used in the final chapter were Lyn, a general, a paladin, a bishop I got near the end and an arch sage who I got at the very end. I think there were others, but can't remember exactly who. In the end I was able to beat the game (and probably could have without anyone dying, but had my bishop attack and do no damage against the final boss which got him killed).
A couple games like Sacred Stones and Awakening have an over world map where you an get extra exp too. If you happen to lose a lot of units, they did have a solution in the DS remake games. You would receive generic units if your numbers fell below a certain amount.
Also in Conquest, if you need to you can always recruit another person's unit.

@yokokazuo: Wait hold on.......if you like have every single unit killed except the main ones, the final boss becomes like impossible without soft resetting for each and every chapter? Doesn't that sound a lot like a bad game design? Like if you only have two units for the final boss in the GBA one instead of the actual amount, then you'd be screwed because the final boss has units that are stronger than you and you have like what only very few with poor stats?

If that really seems to be the case, then I'm worried about how I'll end up in Conquest and don't spoil the endgame because I'm yet to get there! Sure, Awakening is very well balanced interms of lack of power but seeing as how you lack resources and the fact that you permanently lose your units, starting all over again from the first sounds like a nightmare because your stats and units aren't sufficient to beat the boss.

@yokokazuo: I know what you mean about waiting on GBA VC. I have my original cartridge still for Blazing Sword, but to be able to play on a tv screen without using an emulator? Yeah I just about fell all over myself logging into the eshop to download that. I think I'll start getting some of the japan only ones on VC since I've moved all my ROM files to another computer and I'm too lazy to put them back on my gaming computer right now. FE and Nintendo Wars are the best SRPGs...

Bad game design... or bad player? That's a rather extreme situation.

Plus, you only soft reset if you want to. Some might be willing to go on if they lose a unit they had no intention of losing. But if you lose the unit you've been raising for most of the game? Well, if you WANT to let them go, you can. But if you make the choice to lose the unit, that's on you. Not soft reseting at all should be reserved for those looking for a crazy (self-imposed) challenge.

Reset for a little progress now, or restart for a lot later. The choice is yours (assuming you ever need to make it).

I first came across Fire Emblem via Melee (Marth and Roy) and ended up getting Path of Radiance around 8 years ago after coming across Ike in Brawl. It was an absolute masterpiece and got Radiant Dawn and Shadow Dragon the same year, found the former pretty good but the weak Dawn Brigade caused problems. The latter I found rather bad and still find it mediocre as killing units is how you get more of the story. Then I got Awakening in late 2013 which was the start of a long list of games that helped me feel much more satisfied with my 3DS purchase in 2011. Thanks to the Wii U VC, I was able to get FE7 and Sacred Stones in August 2014 and January 2015 respectively and loved both those games.

I'm hoping that Binding Blade gets localized for Wii U VC, especially given the rumours about Mother 3 localization (I'll get that too if it happens).

@DarthNocturnal: Ok so if the player wants to soft reset, that's fine. But what if he/she is nowhere powerful enough to beat the final boss?

Before the end, the games are made in such a way that you get units that are strong and makes balance for the whole chapter. But how does that work in the end if you can't make them even stronger than they are now? and if you have to restart entirely just for that big push you have to make to beat the endboss, then how on earth can you ever beat the game if what you decide isn't enough to last even at the near end of the game?

@Grumblevolcano: You are just better off using emulators. I doubt that Nintendo will ever realize that people would want the original series to the west. Mother 3 can possibly happen though considering how we got the first game here.

@Socar well @DarthNocturnal: explained most of it. On normal mode I wouldn't say it is too difficult. In my play through in Conquest, I kind of switched between using several different characters so near the end I had some characters who were a little under levelled. I did have some troubles on a couple chapters, but after taking a different approach through them I was able to clear the chapters.
If you choose to let your units die, it is usually done as a challenge for some people, especially on higher difficulties. Even if you have a few units left, it can still be possible even if it is very difficult as long as you know what to do. I haven't done a no reset run myself, but if I recall correctly, @Iggly did a Lunatic run without resetting and while it was difficult near the end with few characters left, he did beat it in the end.

Anyone else a big fan of Sacred Stones? That's my personal favorite of the series, since it was the first title released in the west that allowed you to select a promotion path and had a world map. I also felt that it was the most balanced in terms of both difficulty and variety of units; if you recruited everyone you could have 1 of every possible promoted class. That also made every character feel that more special, unlike in Awakening where every character almost felt like a blank slate with the number of reclass options they had.

@Socar what you are describing is poor playing (not trying to be rude) FE is a strategy series. It also sounds like you are using many of your pre promoted units to bolster your army when that just makes them xp sponges and takes away valuable xp that your other units could use. That works in the current versions because of DLC and being able to search for challenges and what not but in the older games? Kiss of Death. I mean you could still beat a FE game feasibly like that but it is like cutting off your arm and trying to fire a recurve bow. Not a pretty sight.

I often unequip weapons from pre promoted units and then use them to fence in the enemy so I can safely level without dying. It takes longer to play the game but I often steamroll through by the end when doing that.

@Socar: Roy is in Smash 4 though and if the Mother 3 localization happens he would be the only Smash character that is Japan exclusive (I'm not counting the true ending of FE7 here).

@Bassman_Q: I will say that was the one thing that bothered me about Awakening; units could be almost anything! Which is great if you lost someone or if you had a favorite character or wanted to take advantage of gains but it always felt...off to me. I still love Awakening to pieces though. Sacred stones was great though, replaying it now on wiiu.

I'll reset even if a unit I had no intention of using the unit. And I'd never think of proceeding without a trained unit unless I was trying to give myself a no reset challenge.

Also, when playing an FE game without the freedom of grinding, you don't want to spread that XP out too much. I go for roughly one character for most classes (a few exceptions are OK, like Cavaliers and their kin). No reason to train every Mage you stumble across (unless the game has more then one magic type. Then getting two or more casters can be ideal.)

And stay away from pre-promoted units unless they have good average stats. Generally speaking, training up from the starting class is better.

@Grumblevolcano I'd say it is possible, but I'm not really sure if Nintendo would go through the trouble of translating the game. I believe that for any of the older FE games to be localized, it would probably have to be in a remake like Shadow Dragon.

@Bassman_Q I enjoyed it quite a bit, but it goes after Blazing Sword and the Radiant games for me. It does have some of my favourite chapters however. I really like the sidequest (strange how it is the only one) where you use Ephraim along with Kyle, Forde and Orson to take on a bunch of enemies since you just have a small amount of units to fight with. I also enjoyed some things in Eirika's story since it gives you some backstory to some characters like Joshua and I liked using him to defeat Caellach.
The Rausten chapter where you defend is also one of my favourite defend chapters in the series.

@yokokazuo It was pretty difficult, though my remaining units were leveled pretty good so I managed to do the rest of Lunatic in Awakening decently. Lunatic+ on the other hand would be impossible to do without grinding and no resets lol.
