Topic: FFXII On Switch?

Square Enix announced that they'll be holding a live stream tomorrow focusing on Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age, teasing that it'll have some big news about the game. Given Square's recent statement about their increased support of Switch with mid-size projects, do you think that a Switch port could be announced?

I definitely think it's possible, since FFXII fits pretty soundly in the "mid-size" range--it's a big remaster, of course, but nothing as big as, say, FFXV or FFVII Remake.

I've only played one Final Fantasy game before but I'd be very glad to see more of them hit the Switch. Sounds like there's a decent chance it could happen. I'm not really sure why they haven't brought any main FF games to Nintendo consoles since the sixth one. I know it was originally because the N64 didn't have enough memory or something like that, but that's not really an issue any more.

Seems ridiculous that they didn't plan on this from the start... Remastered FFXII is OK, but portability would have been a big selling point. Could have been a substantial Switch release these past months, now a late port seems destined to get lost in the shuffle unless it releases Jan./Feb...

I would love for this to happen, but my money's on a PC version.

That said, releasing a PS2 remaster of a household series such as Final Fantasy to an audience who's already familiar with the setting of the game because of exclusive spin-offs is the definition of a safe move.

Aren't there usually issues with licensing though? I dunno how this stuff works.
I thought if it was originally made as a console exclusive, it usually has to stay that way.
Hence the lack of FFX remaster on Xbox.

I would love to see this, but I agree with @MarcelRguez that a PC is much more likely (in fact, I'd say that even if the Switch does get it, it'll go to PC as well).

@Dezzy Doubt that's an issue - FFX remaster was on Steam, and FF6 and earlier games were ported to the PS1.

A small part of me is still hoping Square Enix does FF Tactics. It's the same Ivalice as FFXII, so come on Square. Do it.

On a more serious note, FFXII is a great game. It is a shame that Nintendo consoles have been missing out on the main series FF games. While they do vary in quality, I'd say they're all worth trying out (just the main numbers).

@Anti-Matter Remember, nothing's been confirmed yet; just speculation for now!
The stream will be from 20:00 to 21:00 Japan time, which I believe is 18:00 to 19:00 in Indonesia.

@MarcelRguez I do agree that a PC port is much more likely, but given SE's recent statements about the Switch, I wouldn't count Nintendo out of the equation. Since FFXII has already sold 1,000,000 units on PS4, Square will be looking for additional platforms to release the game on to keep the sales flowing, and I think that a Switch version would be very profitable that way. I could see an easy 500,000 units selling on Switch.

@Dezzy And I believe that FFXII was a timed exclusive to PS4, not fully exclusive. Since it's been out on PS4 for around 8 months now, it's possible that Square is looking to port it to other platforms.

This is exactly the FF game I would want on Switch (well that and a new Final Fantasy Tactics but y'know...baby steps). It's not my favorite but I liked what I played of it like...a decade ago, heard the new version is better, I'm glad in 2017 this game is apparently more relevant than XIII.

@ilikeike Absolutely, I too think it's easy money for them. I guess Square's recent comments about the Switch hint at more games coming, and I can't think of a more fitting title of theirs to port to the system than this one. Maybe some older stuff like World of Final Fantasy or some other back catalog title, but not much else.

So why were neither FFX or FFXII released on xbox but FF15 was?
I think there is a console exclusivity thing that just doesn't include PC.

@Dezzy How many Square games have missed the Xbox this gen so far? How many Japanese games? I doubt it has much to do with exclusivity deals at all, odd cases like Street Fighter V aside.

@MarcelRguez

Square enix games isn't a good metric. Something like Dragon Quest isn't gonna sell on Xbox anyway so that's understandable. FF15 sold about 1 million on the Xbox though.
So why wouldn't they release FFX and FF12, both of which would be easy to port to another console given that they're heavily below its technical ability.

For FFX, I did a quick search, and it seems that Sony was involved in publishing.

FFXII, I'm not sure. Remember, this one had a sequel which was released on NDS. I'd say, FFX will probably stay exclusive to Sony (similar to KH 1/2), but perhaps FFXII could see its way to other consoles.

@Dezzy If other games by that same publisher isn't a good metric, you tell me what is.

@MarcelRguez
Like I said. Other games that would actually sell. FFX would've sold on Xbone.

@Dezzy Counterpoint: the FFX Remasters were low-key projects that, unlike FFXV, didn't need to release on every platform possible to recoup costs. Combine that with straight JRPGs not doing well at all on Xbox and the fact that the people who played the original release probably have a PS4.

If @NotAceAttorney is right and Sony still holds publishing rights over the title, then that's pretty much settled. If that's not clear, I still don't see how a Japanese game skipping Xbox isn't seen as a commonplace occurrence by now. If we were talking about Just Cause, Deus Ex, Tomb Raider or other Western games published by Square, I'd see how someone's mind might jump to stuff like publishing rights, but this is far closer in my mind to stuff like NieR Automata being PS4-only: it's not like Square has a lot of choices here.

If anything, Kingdom Hearts III having an Xbox version is the real head-scratcher.

@MarcelRguez Yep, KH3 on Xbox One is especially strange because it doesn't have any of the collections. Meanwhile the GBA, NDS and 3DS all have Kingdom Hearts titles. Spin-offs, yes, but all important to the story, Dream Drop Distance specifically. That being said, Square Enix are struggling to get the damn game out on its first platforms, Switch is probably an afterthought right now.

Another interesting point would be Valkyria Chronicles 4. It's getting an Xbox One release, but only in western countries/Europe. Honestly, it all seems so inconsistent.

I would love to see a FF title on the Switch. FF has been absent from Nintendo systems for too long.
