Topic: Faulty Switch. UK Nintendo utter shambles

UK Nintendo complete shambles. Had my Switch for 3 weeks and the joy cons stopped syncing. Called Nintendo and they said there was faulty "batch" of Switches. They arranged for a courier to come and pick it up. Then nothing from Nintendo. Not a email to say "hey, thanks we've received it". Nothing. So I waited and waited. Weeks. Called them and they said wait for the replacement. So I waited and waited. Called them. No more stock until early August. Got my money back and, guess what, got a console the next day from Amazon. Now I'm trying to retrieve the downloaded games off my old Switch onto my new Switch. No joy. It's an utter shambles. Nintendo UK just don't seem to care about their reputation anymore. So disappointed and frustrated. Spent hours on the phone. Not any offer of compensation for inconvenience caused. Utter shambles. Thanks Nintendo for making what should have been a happy purchase into an utter nightmare.

Switch was rushed to market. Clearly and it shows with so many Switches having multitude of issues. You see it on forums all over the internet about it. I sent mine in twice and sent my Pro Controller in too. UK Nintendo is maybe worse than NoA, but they both are ran horribly and use a cheap 3rd party repair shop to fix their stuff. Pretty sad.

Totally agree with you. I have every Nintendo from the original to the current Switch. I've never had these problems before. The Switch is ruining their reputation. Instead of admitting that there is problem they've sub-contracted it to The Hub (the 3rd party repair shop) who are trashing Nintendo's good name. I still can't get my old games off my old switch onto my new switch. Not a happy customer here.

This is bad news for me. I bought mine at launch at GAME and its been flawless since. Today however I got a communication error and was told to restart the console. It now wont boot up. Tried hard reset and it just gets stuck on the Nintendo Switch logo. Now a local GAME has limited stock so I could take it back for a replacement but would then loose my game saves and although BotW is a fantastic game I don't think I could put another 200 hours into it. So I phone Nintendo UK and they said fine send it back but did warn me that if they cant repair it it might be a while until i get a replacement. If they cant repair it and there isnt any replacements can I then demand a refund?

@okimummy Did you have to send the whole thing back or just the switch and the joycons?

@Samus7Killer No offense, I know when a console breaks down it can be heartbreaking and bad customer service makes it even worse, BUT when you sell almost five million units of a technologically advanced product you are going to have a few bad units. This does not in any way "prove" that the Switch was "clearly" rushed to market.

Put it another way: my daughter's Macbook Pro has broken down on her twice, in the same way, with an issue that the Apple dudes told me was a known problem. Well, CLEARLY the MBP was rushed to market and is a shoddy product and a betrayal of Apple's old reputation for quality, right? I mean, it shows so obviously, with people complaining about their MBPs in technical forums all over the world. AMIRITE GUYZ?!?

No, come on. If I told you that (and mind you, it's a true story) you would rightly laugh at me, because seriously, everybody knows that MBPs aren't junk. Problems happen to advanced electronics. Every bit of consumer tech ever produced has had a few bad apples get past Quality Control. That includes MBPs, the legendary IBM-era Thinkpads, Playstation 4 and, yes, the Switch. Hell, it also includes performance cars, military hardware and space shuttles.

The real shabby part of the story here is the customer service. Because what happened when my kid's Mac broke down was, we went to the Apple Store and they said "oh yeah, that happens sometimes, we'll fix it up and you can pick it up tomorrow. No charge." And they did. And THAT is how you do customer service. No fuss, no questions, no wait time, no lost data (they actually told us with great gravity that sometimes you lose data, but we didn't). That is the part where Nintendo really need to step up their game.

@BigBadJohn
Getting stuck on the switch logo I know about that. Still waiting on my console or a new one. Couple of days before it broke I bought the Zelda dlc. Wonder what will happen if I get a new console.

Managed to get my downloaded games off my old switch and onto my new switch. It totally defeated the customer services in the UK. I had to go through Nintendo customer services in Germany. They were superb. Resolved the issue in a matter of minutes. Couldn't have helped me more. New Switch seems to be working fine. I still don't understand why Nintendo are allowing their name to be tarnished by their UK customer service and warehouse.

@Tsurii It's a company called "The Shack" or something like that i think, all reviews of them are awful.
I've had my fair share of problems (pre-orders being cancelled for no reason, pre-orders going missing, normal orders going missing, etc) but i can't help but order off the site as they have exclusive things.
I have emailed Nintendo using the UK site about the crapness of the service from their own "Official online Store" but have never had even so much as an email back from them.

@okimummy I had the sync issue with my joycon too. Went to bricks and mortar game store where I bought my Switch from (EB Games) and they swapped over joycons in store let them deal with Nintendo much easier. Now I have no issues with them, all I needed to do was drive to the store no waiting at home! 😄👌

Lol it's a bit like the SNES mini preorders that everyone seems to be struggling with I walked into a store as soon as I heard about it gave some money over and my preorder is safe and sound. No sitting in front of a screen hoping the link works in time before thousands of other users do.

"Thank you for using Nintendo Customer Support, and for your continued support and love for Nintendo products.

Your Nintendo Switch console was sent to our technicians for repair. Unfortunately it was found during the repairs that some of the data on the console had become unreadable due to the nature of the fault, including:

  • Users registered on the console
  • Link between your user on the console and your Nintendo Account
  • Data saved under Data Management (software data, save data, etc.)

The console has been deregistered as the active console for downloads for your Nintendo Account. Upon return of the console, please create a new user and link it to your Nintendo Account.

Please note that your Nintendo Account has not been deleted, so once you have created a new user on the console and linked it to your Nintendo Account, you will be able to re-download any software or downloadable content purchased on Nintendo eShop. However, please be aware that some content may no longer be available for download due to distribution reasons. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause."

I don't understand if the data has been wiped why I can't just log in with my old username?

@Tsurii Right so the username/password is just stored on the unit itself. Looks like I'll. e starting BotW from the start then.

Update: just received my unit back from Nintendo and it is repaired and looking good. They enclosed a letter granting me a new 12 month warranty. Took about a week and a half so genuinely no complaints from me.

@JasmineDragon @BigBadJohn i was disgusted with them,9 month's of game save's lost the unit would not turn on.the retailer did not give a receipt, so could not send it to Nintendo. went back to retailer who swapped it for me with another faulty switch with the blue joy-con not working either.so gave up got a full refund, as a good will gesture. sold all the game's pad and all extra's for nothing will never buy another Nintendo product again.i rang them today to give them customer feedback they said sorry but i would have thought by now there would be no faulty console's in the shop's i got the original console in march.
so,so,disappointing.

The UK repair desk is arguably pretty crap. It's a real shame, and needs sorting out ASAP.

However, people trying to score wider points than 'the organisation that Nintendo contract to in the UK are notably substandard' are being silly.

I hope you can get your new console sorted with your old games, and that you don't have to get it sent in again for any reason.

@blackpooldaz That's a sad tale indeed. I really do hope they somehow sort out the service with repairs in the UK before too long. Maybe they should invest in starting up a proper repair unit themselves rather than contracting out to a company that clearly isn't up to task.
