@Heavyarms55 I agree MF moral choices wouldn't be suitable but the exploration side of it I think could really expand the IP. A simple yet fun combat system when on foot accessible too all...one can dream

Star Fox 64 is one of my favorite games of all time. I couldn't count how many times I played it through. That being said, I thought Zero was a terrible game. Two of the most appealing aspects of the franchise were its controls and multiplayer. How Nintendo/Platinum thought removing both of those things in favor of a rightfully stigmatized control scheme will forever astound me.

The seemingly resounding backlash following Zero's release had me questioning if Nintendo would be too discouraged to bring back Star Fox. I would certainly like to see a return to form, though. If it comes with yet another jarring attempt at innovation gone awry, I'll keep my money. I'll gladly take a game like Adventures before I even look at a Zero follow-up.

And I feel so bad for Zero. It was SO close to being a return to form, but it went too far in one direction for controls and then not far enough for level ideas or quantity.

I actually really need to emphasize this. When I got at least somewhat used to Star Fox Zero's controls (and changed the options ASAP for how they worked like people suggested), and was flying most of the actual Arwing stages, it truly felt like Star Fox 64. And no game I've ever played other than Star Fox 64 has felt quite like Star Fox 64 until then (not even the good parts of Assault). So the fact that it takes WAY too long to get ahold of how to play the game well, plus the lack of new environments or ideas, plus being way too short, plus lacking multiplayer, plus some of the non-Arwing stages (which are ok but far below the arwing stages, as per the norm) is infuriating. Like if they had just done some of this stuff, I would be this game's biggest defender basically.

It actually is a bit more Platinum than people said in that regard, since Platinum Games' games are often considered to be ones you don't master until at least 2nd playthrough. I'm one of those people that didn't love Vanquish for similar reasons actually. Because it's a 3rd person cover shooter where the point is basically to get gud until you can enjoy it by not playing it as a cover shooter, more or less. But in a single playthrough of the main campaign, for me, I was unable to do so and thus it annoyed me because it was still a 3rd person cover shooter (and I didn't have much interest in mastering it tbh). So I get the hatred for the game, but I do believe the high points of Zero were a joy to playthrough and I hope they're somehow able to make another one that can do that without expecting people to spend 20 hours mastering the controls of a 3 hour game without providing enough new content compared to a game released in 1997.

If they bring Starfox to the Switch, I hope to god it's actually a new game this time and not another damn remake of 64 with bad motion controls

Going forward, I think Star Fox is going to have to incorporate more strategy-type elements to its core gameplay with a bit more freedom from its classic on rails gameplay. There are good elements to take from several Star Fox games but I think Star Fox DS, Star Fox 2, and a bit of Star Fox Zero are hinting at a possible way forward for the series.

In Star Fox DS and 2, you have this central base or location that needs to be constantly protected as you go about completing other missions and taking down targets/threats. Mission structure can borrow similarities from the Strike series (Desert, Jungle, Urban, etc.) where you have different objectives immediately available and the player had a choice over which one to do first and in some instances which vehicle to take. Star Fox is a team so selecting different pilots of varying stats could provide numerous pilot/vehicle play-styles and preferences.

Rescuing captives from enemy camps and transporting them to your base can provide upgrades for vehicles, weapons, and base defenses.

I'd say Kid Icarus: Uprising is secretly the best Space Harrier, @kkslider5552000. Awesome game though!

@Megas75

I dunno. I think new Star Fox games must incorporate omni-directional shooting with motion controls. Arwing and Landmaster can probably get right analog shooting but if they bring back the gyrocopter, I can't imagine how that would work without motion controls.

Star Fox needs more freedom in its gameplay and motion controlled omni-directional shooting promotes a higher degree of freedom (at least in the way you target enemies).

I agree Star Fox needs more attention, as it feels like it only slightly got more attention then Metroid, right before that new Metroid game came out with 4 in the works.
I also love the idea of a Mass Effect + Star Fox game.

@Kinoen there is just so much potential in the IP. I really hope Nintendo have a plan

I don't have a Switch so it doesn't matter to me if they make a new game. At any rate, out of all the games, Star Fox is still the best one in the series, so I doubt any future game, if any, will surpass it in any way.

Never really been interested in Star Fox, but I'd give it a try if they turned it into an open world space shooter game. That would probably be the best way to give it more mainstream appeal and more sales. Not sure if they'd make a game that ambitious when it hasn't really sold well though.

I think that Starfox would need to tell its story with a different type of gameplay. While I personally have a good memory of Starfox 64, I don't think you can make that type of game work anymore. I think the best that could be done(and could be a great game) would be a good ole' shmup or bullet hell type game. This could be a good title for 3DS, but with the announcement of another older popular bullet hell game on switch that can be played in table top mode in portrait orientation, I think a switch starfox top down could work. A nice $10-$30 title. Also the lower development cost of such a game would likely make Nintendo less afraid of it not selling super well, but a good risk to get Starfox into the minds of gamers again in a positive way.

In terms of a real AAA level stuff, I think the best way to make it go forward would likely be something more like a western RPG. Focus would be like the space sections of starwars battlefront 2(the real one, not the [removed] EA one), but this would be fleshed out more. You would have objectives to save large space vessels under fire from enemies, repair shipwrecked vessels perhaps, but of course also being able to have big space fights and go into enemy ships and invade them(think space pirates) and sabatoge them from the inside or steal the tech, personel or as a rescue mission for prisoners etc. I think it could work well. Honestly many might say make it like mass effect, but I'd say keep it simple, make it a single guided story, nothing too complex and just tell a good story and focus on making tight gameplay. As you move through the game, as you take on more missions, the more you explore, the more risk you take on missions, the more you can get unique parts for your personal fighter, and perhaps even to tweak the fighters of your crewmates or even your main big ship. But I think the best would be keep it simple, upgrade your own fighter, and level up Fox, and have some weapon variety like rifles, pistols, and such to mix up infantry combat when on ships/space stations. Oh yeah, space stations too. But I think a cool thing to make side missions worth it is to make the characters who are part of it repay you by being able to be recruited to help you on later story missions, or offer special unique items like weapons and ship parts etc.

I don't know what else you could add but that is sort of the basic idea roughly.

Though I doubt after how terrible Starfox 0 was they would do anything, the fact that they released starfox 2 on the SNES mini did good things for the game series. So in the end it could eventually come, but I think anything Nintendo has in mind, it would just be in the spitballing ideas phase. WIth the switch and other games in the pipeline, I think we'd likely see starfox in 2020 at earliest at this point if its even a thing.

@hirokun nice ideas I could see your AAA ideas working well. Still would love to see some planet mission on the ground, maybe responding to a distress signal. You could enter the atmosphere then fly to the signal ( sometimes being attacked ) land and investigate could be good

Seeing some great ideas from people keep it up

Would like to create my own character and have an online matchmaking system enabled to put me into a team of four to fly missions obtainable from a counter of some sort in a hub space station. Players could specialise in DPS, Support etc... Timed events featuring characters from the series. Rewards from missions used to upgrade ships and cosmetics. Sounds like a haven for lootboxes, but don't think Nintendo would sink that low.

How about an open-world game mash-up of Firefly, Borderlands, Steamworld Heist and Titan Fall?

A ragtag group of "space pirates," similar to the crew of the old TV series Firefly or Steamworld Heist, travelling to various planets to complete various main and side missions, a'la Borderlands. You would have missions that take place on foot, but their primary ship would have a few other vehicles, a couple of bikes, a rover and even Mech suits. The key difference would be make it a third person shooter rather than first person.

The crew consists of six playable characters, all with different stats, abilities and specialties:
Fox - All around, leader of the team
Krystal - sniper, second in command
Falco - Heavy, weapons and explosives expert
Peppy - pilot, vehicle specialist
Slippy - engineer, special items-based skills
Katt - bounty hunter-type role, hand-to-hand combat

I feel like something like this could work and revitalize a franchise with a TON of missed potential.

Throw in a few flying missions, for nostalgia's sake, and you've got something really fun, in my opinion. Basically animal Firefly crew playing Borderlands. What more could you want?

Thoughts?

@DarkSim01 Can I just turn it on it's head and say the crew consists of Wolf, Pigma, Leon, Panthar and Krystal and give the game the 'let's be bad guys' vibe. So you could go on raids, escape the law etc

I never drive faster than I can see. Besides, it's all in the reflexes.

I don't see why not. Shoot, make Wolf's crew their rivals and eventually have DLC where you play as them doing some of their side missions and raids.

That's instant money, as far as I'm concerned.

I thought Zero was quite good really. You just needed to get a hang of the controls. Most of the bad reviews were people just not managing that. If you removed all of those people, it'd be like an 8/10 game.

For the next game I'd like to see open levels where you can get out of your ship to do various missions on a large map. Something like the old Battlefront 2 game on the PS2/Xbox where you'd fly into the enemies ship and park your ship and then go and blow up their engines. That was fun.

It's dangerous to go alone! Stay at home.
