@Tsurii I was surprised by how elegantly Splatoon 2 plays in handheld mode with the gyro controls. It's almost as comfortable as playing docked, imo, which is a huge victory for the hybrid concept.
Mario has major issues in handheld mode thanks to the focus on waggle + motion gestures, though. Which is one of the big things dragging it down for me. Releasing it on a hybrid console and then perma-mapping certain controls to motion controls other than gyro was stupid. This lack of button remapping is especially annoying considering how redundant the controls are, with multiple face buttons being mapped to jump and action.
@Tsurii Being able to play comfortably in handheld mode was a prerequisite for my purchase of the game in the first place. If I was going to be stuck playing Splatoon on a TV again, it would be cheaper to just stick with the Wii U original.
Don't get me wrong: it's absolutely best on the TV, but handheld mode is more than playable, and it's often just easier to whip out the tablet and play a few rounds online than it is to go to the trouble of playing on the TV. That's true with most games, which is why my stationary platforms have huge backlogs, whereas my portable ones have small, extremely manageable backlogs.
It's a real mixture for me. I love being able to lay in bed playing the Switch and also take it out with me all the time. I also whilst at home enjoy playing handheld with headphones. On the flip side I do play in a TV mode a lot though so I love the versatility.
I would say dock gets most of my time. That is manly because we ply a lot as a family where everyone is involved. Handheld is good for late nights, early mornings, and soccer games😁
With an easily accessible high def setup for best picture and audio quality, I play mostly docked.
But I also took Skyrim and Disgaea with me to bed which seems comfortable as well.
Yet to buy it, but I actually plan on using it more as handheld even if indoors. I like the idea of it being less cluttered under the TV! Can safely and neatly store it away elsewhere
I have had my switch for a week now and I have only played in handheld mode so far. I just love the portability and to make myself super comfy and play beautiful titles in my hand. Its something magical.
I need to try docked with games like Mario and see how I like it. That will for sure happen this weekend.
Completely on handheld mode since I don't have a TV at my current place. Really happy since it means I can just sit in front of my laptop to research stuff on game while still playing it...
(and even easily put it to sleep when I have to do things on my laptop! Or have to go somewhere. So useful)
All the Nintendo published games look so much better on my 4k tv. Because of Nintendos art style most of their games on the switch and Wii U look better than the one x and pro supported games on my tv. This may seem irrelevant to the question but It's obvious that I prefer using the switch as a home console. The battery only lasts for 2 hours tops so I rarely use it in handheld mode. I still use the 3ds if I want to play on the go, but most of the time I use my 3ds at home. Never really cared to take a handheld outside of the home although lately, ive been taking my 3ds to appointments and trips where I know I'll be sitting in a waiting room room with people glued to their phones. Taking the switch would require a backpack and create a hassle carrying it around. The switch is too big for me to use portably. I've never even taken my iPad out of the house except to classes when I have a backpack and even those occasions have been a pain. When your carrying around an expensive piece of hardware weather, thieves, accidents and forgetfulness could lead to damage theft, or loss.
