I find this feature neat personally. It's like playing on a mini TV with the same control style as when you use an actual TV. Perfect for playing a game while having some coffee. I don't use it a lot but it's one of those things I'm glad Nintendo took an extra step to include.
I prefer handheld mode tbh. It feels uncomfortable having to sit in a position that allows you to clearly see the screen. The kickstand also doesn't have the right feel of steadiness, which is most notable when touching anything on the console itself, like the volume. Glad to see others liking the inclusion, though!
I prefer to use the wheel accessory for Mario Kart so, if the TV is in use, I'll undock for some Tabletop racing I've played a bit of SnipperClips in Tabletop mode too, great for quickly showing the thing off on-the-go! ..but I can't imagine that split-screen multiplayer is that comfortable - especially if you have 3/4 players all staring intently at one teeny tiny little corner of the screen! ..maybe the Switch needs one of those magnifying glass accessories you could get for the GameBoy!
I use Tabletop mode while I'm on my laptop nowadays. Just having the little screen propped against my laptop screen (no kickstand needed) is simple, quick, and ensures I'm not diverting my attention away from either my laptop nor my Switch. Honestly just having the Joycon free-hand makes this much more comfortable because I don't feel like I'm having to lean forward and bunch my hands together. I can just lay down, laptop on my legs with a Joycon in each hand. I got used to this pretty quick!
Never take anything I say seriously. S'all you buddy. ;)
Mainly play on my Switch but I have 3DS, Wii U and PS4 as well.
Fave game series include: Pokemon, Smash Bros, Splatoon, Disgaea, Bayonetta, Dragons Dogma, Phantasy Star & Arena of Valor.
If I'm at home and am playing a competitive game like Splatoon 2 (When it comes out) and can't use the TV for whatever reason, I'll put it into tabletop mode and use my Pro controller. The rest of the time, I just use it in handheld mode. I would probably use tabletop mode more if I liked using split JoyCons, but I really hate playing games that way.
I don't really have a tabletop where I play (the sofa or bed usually), but I suspect Mario Kart will mean I'll try it at friends houses for local multiplayer.
Rarely with the kickstand. But a few times, if I'm playing while I'm falling asleep, I'll prop the Switch sideways on a pillow and take the joy-cons out, and put my arms in a comfortable sleeping position. I'm not sure if that counts as handheld mode or not.
It's my preferred style when I'm sitting and a desk or a table. I'll pull out my portable stand, pop the Switch in there, and play with detached joycon controllers. Insanely comfortable layout for me.
Only for two player multi-player when away from the TV. I haven't used it for single player.
Come to think of it the Wii U had the same three modes. I used them on Wii U as I do on Switch.... except the Wii U was always by the TV which meant I never used the Wii U in tabletop mode.
Yep - was at a friend's BBQ over the weekend and while the boring ( ) football was on, me and my girlfriend set up the Switch on the kitchen table in Tabletop mode and played a few cups on Mario Kart 8. I love the kickstand, even if it is a bit flimsy. Would be nice to have something sturdier in a revision of the Switch down the line
