Topic: Do you play certain games in handheld and others docked?

For those of us who love the hybrid nature of the Switch and use it in both forms, do you find you prefer to play certain games in one mode or the other? I certainly do. I have found I love playing Stardew Valley and Golf Story in portable but prefer to play games like Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and Mario Odyssey all docked. I don't mind the reverse, I just find this more comfortable.

I think it is something about the art style of SDV and GS being more like GBA/SNES games feeling more comfortable on a smaller screen in my hands, but XC2 and Mario feeling more like console titles at home on a big screen.

I know there is a growing crowd that likes playing those smups in tate mode too.

If you feel the same, which games do you prefer playing which way?

Well, I play the Gunvolt games in TV mode simply because they were originally handheld-only experiences and I like re-playing them on the TV... I'll likely do the same thing for TWEWY Final Remix. I prefer Fire Emblem Warriors on the TV because of performance mode, allowing the game to be played at 60 FPS, but it's not like I need 60 FPS. I just prefer it. (I'll still play the game at 30 FPS in handheld mode on the bus or whatever.)

Anything else, I actually prefer handheld mode. I really liked the GamePad on Wii U where I didn't need to use the TV for a lot of games and apps. This is an extension of that and I LOVE it. I hope YouTube, Netflix, Crunchyroll, and even Amazon Prime Video come soon. Hulu on the Switch is fantastic, but it isn't my favorite streaming service.

I've spent 90% of the time docked and when I'm doing something like taking a poop or hiding from the wife I take the switch with me.

@Heavyarms55 Yeah, there are a few games that are just better handheld, either because of the graphics (Stardew) or because I spend a lot of time thinking and there isn't a lot happening on the screen and I am extremely nearsighted - Ultra Chess, Disgaea 5, Mario+Rabbids are all that kind.

Other games really call out for the "cinematic" experience, or feel much better with a Pro Controller, so I play them on TV most of the time. (Doom, Spla2oon, etc.)

@Heavyarms55
I play All my Switch games in Handheld mode 99.99%.
I rarely use my TV and dock since i play my Switch on my bed or at living room (for better Online streaming)

My play time is about 75% handheld 25% docked and, although some games like Mario Odissey and Xenoblade look far better on the TV, the only game that I always play in docked mode is Doom. I really suck at FPS games without a keyboard and a mouse, so I really need the extra precission of the PRO controller in order to survive...

In the other hand, I prefer to play some games like FIFA and Mario&Rabbids in handheld mode.

Splatoon 2 is literally the only game I play docked 80% of the time since it's much better to play Splatoon 2 with a Pro Controller and I usually play the game lying down in front of the TV.
Every other game I have? I play them predominantly in handheld mode. So as of now, the only time when my Switch is in the dock is when it is charging or when I'm playing Splatoon.

God first.

I generally far prefer console gaming to handheld gaming, but I'll still take VOEZ's touch screen controls over the patched in Joycon controls any day. Sometimes Slime San is nice in handheld mode too, just to have the screen closer up to your face given how small the sprites are. That one probably isn't much of a problem if you have a bigger TV than mine, mind you.

While I've played all my games 100% handheld, the recent Lego Super Heroes 2 game has me itching to play on a large tv as some of the text and a lot of the on-screen action is tiny. Nearly finished now though, so not sure I'll bother, but if I knew what I know now when I started playing L:SH2 it would have been tv all the way.

I play about 80% tv and 20% handheld. I can't get used to playing Mario Odyssey without motion controls so that sucks... Anyone else who feels that way? I think I'd go moon hunting more often if I could play it on the go. Guess that's a reason why I won't use motion controls with other games (e.g. Zelda); don't want to ruin the fun playing handheld.

Generally no, not until recently anyway. I've been running a fair bit this past year but picked up a calf injury in January, so instead, to keep some cardio tick-over, I've been using my exercise bike more. So I dock my Switch and play FIFA 18 with split joy-cons while cycling for an hour or so. This seems to coincide with me having a better run of results too for some reason, so it's currently my preferred way to play FIFA.

But if I'm not on my bike, the only other time I'll play docked is if I want to capture some footage over HDMI, which I've not been doing much of recently.

I'd like to try the Kirby demo docked, because the handheld resolution doesn't provide much of a jump from 3DS quality, and I've been wanting to see Kirby in 1080p forever.

If the game I'm playing is best with motion controls then I'll just split the joy-cons and drop the Switch in my lap or use the kickstand.

Generally, first-party/AAA titles on the big screen and indies handheld - though I have been really enjoying Xenoblade 2 as a handheld experience. Furthermore, while I played through about 95% of Mario Odyssey on TV, I ended up completing it (Darker Side run) about 10min into a train journey home from work. Didn't realise I was as near the end as I was, or expect to get through it so quickly.

We play probably 80% handheld 20% docked. Unless we are playing MK8 or my kids are playing Minecraft, a Lego game or something that is split screen we play handheld. This is the first handheld system I've had since the gameboy in the 90s and I love the portable aspect of it. Didn't know what I was missing until I experienced it. Just so convenient.

I play mostly in handheld mode altogether, because... I'll just say the only time I find to play the system in my schedule is typically when I can only play it portably. =P

I only have two Switch games, Super Mario Odyssey and Mario Kart 8 DX and things are pretty even between them both, although I haven't touched Odyssey since I got Mario Kart.

Yeah, Splatoon 2 is pretty much the only game I play almost exclusively in TV (or tabletop) mode - and that's just down to controller preference really - I like the gyro aiming feature in the game, but only really when I'm using the Grip (I don't like having to tilt the screen in handheld mode - and I find that I get a better feel for the gyro controls when using the Grip over split Joy-Con) ..no problem though - I just play one of my other games instead when I play in handheld!
