@McGruber I'll be honest I don't see the Wii U as a letdown. I've had some amazing experience on the Wii U with some of the best games ever. Don't get me wrong it could have been better but certainly not a let down. The Switch I think has a lot of potential and I can see this revolutionising the games industry. I am trying to temper my hype as I don't want to set expectations that the console can't possibly live up to.

I think Nintendo sees it as a letdown lol. But yes I also had some great moments with Wii U, but they were few and far between until I eventually got rid of the system. Off TV play was the best part about it, so that has me very excited for Switch. It not having the ability of being able to put your game on the TV without getting up and docking it is definitely a let down.

@McGruber But if you didnt have to dock it, that would mean using an IR or wireless signal to stream the system to the screen in your hands or vice versa, which is what Wii U did.

Which would make it more expensive. And limit its range of portability regarding movement.

I dont think anyone but you is complaining that this thing does everything BUT what the Wii U did

@McGruber No of course coming of the back of the Wii sales figures the Wii U would have been a massive let down. Off tv was my favourite feature too as it meant I didn't have to argue with the Mrs for control of the tv lol The versatility of the Switch is such a big deal.

@BLP_Software That's not really fair. If you could play on the tv whilst holding the tablet undocked the Switch would be a the most amazing console ever. The extra grunt the system would need plus the strain on the battery makes this not possible especially for the price range. Doesn't stop us dreaming though. Maybe for the Switch 2.0 😀

Yeah my gripes with the Switch are minor to most people I'll admit. IR sensor on the bottom instead of top (meaning Wii FPS controls are impossible), lack of Streetpass, lack of Miiverse are some of my top gripes lol

The reason I say that is because I remember, when I 1st herd about the Switch. Nintendo said(or at least the rumors), that they wanted to cater to serious and hardcore gamers, and have the console be able to compete with the specs and power of the PS4 and Xbox One. But to me, the switch just seems like the Wii U on steroids, and it's nothing special. So at that event when they announced the console, and the features, it was a letdown for me...

But in all honesty, I thought that this time around, Nintendo was going to get it right! And was really going to produce a jaw dropping console! But they managed to kind of fail me this time around(in my opinion, at least to me).

I am severely tempted to lock this thread, but I am going to try and refrain.

Show me one quote where Nintendo said "that they wanted to cater to serious and hardcore gamers, and have the console be able to compete with the specs and power of the PS4 and Xbox One", because I don't recall that kind of thing ever coming from the company. And if you are going to blame 'rumours' for your letdown then you really only have yourself to blame.

You guys had me at blood and semen.

What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?

I feel this thread is a letdown. The Switch, on the other hand, will be great.

Whatever you think of the power of the console, or this gens "gimmick", or 3rd party support, or online status, or control scheme, or non gaming apps, remember one thing:

The Nintendo Switch will have Nintendo games to play on it. When has an overall line up of Nintendo games ever been a letdown?

Isn't it obvious that Falco Lombardi is actually a parrot?

AlliMeadow

@MrGawain not only that, whining about not having the highest resolution and best graphics does not make you a serious gamer. Many of the best games of all time have bad graphics by todays standard, but they're still great. It isn't like the Switch can't do everything the other consoles can. Because as far as I've understood it, the Switch is able to do whatever the PS4 and Xone can do, just not with the same graphics. The gameplay however can be done, and gameplay is the most important aspect of any game. At least it used to be.

In conclusion I think the Switch is turning out great. I'd rather have a machine capable of diverse gameplay experiences (and by the looks of it the Switch will be better than it's competition) than a machine playing every game in 10k 500fps with a graphic engine so real I actually feel like I'm killing that nazi soldier.

@AlliMeadow Actually, people were serious about graphics even back in that era, and was indicated by the advertising from back then - if not fueled it. If anything, looking back, the kind of bullcrap they'd pull out of their butts was astounding...and yet some people clearly bought into it. I don't think I've ever met those people, but I've been told the legends of playground fights over the value of "blast processing" and how the rich kids would flaunt their "arcade quality" Neo Geo games...

But that wasn't everyone, and like I said, it was entirely possible to go your whole childhood without ever encountering, or at least believing what was obviously just marketing gimmicks meant to create a sense of superiority for the owners of particular brands.

Now it's harder to get away from with the internet. Some things change, and yet some things stay the same...

Do I feel the Nintendo Switch is going to be a letter down? Let me summarise all my thoughts into one word:

No.

But whether it's a let down or not will depend on what you're looking for in the console. What constitutes a let down will be different for each person and their own personal viewpoint.

I'm excited for Switch but also cautious to purchase day one. To me the Switch is kinda what the Wii U should have been (i.e. a proper touch screen tablet that allows off TV screen play but is also is fully portable like a DS) Sadly I feel ultimately it will be a disappointment, because like with the Wii U bar a few games, it will not reach it's full potential. My only issue with Nintendo has been consistency or their lack of it.

I don't understand why people want to push 4k and 8k. Most homes are simply not furnished so they can take advantage of 4k unless they have absurdly big TVs or projectors.

Here is an experiment you can do to see if your TV is placed optimally.

First, make sure you have a picture on the TV that matches the resolution. The best medium to use are blurays for this experiment, consoles can be used, but you need to lookup if the game is outputting the native resolution you want to test. Streaming services doesn't cut it for 4k, they can downgrade the signal, or be too compressed. For a 4k signal you need 4k blurays or a computer.

Second, stand close to the TV, make sure you can see individual pixels. Back away towards your sofa/chair until you cannot distinguish each individual pixel any more. This is your optimal viewing distance to get the most immersion. So if you stand in your sofa, congrats, you have a balanced living room.

If you are closer to the TV than the sofa, you should have a bigger TV or could have had a TV with lower resolution. A cheaper option would be to put the sofa closer to the TV.

If you are closer to the sofa than the TV, you get some benefit from the resolution, but you can increase immersion by being closer.

If you are behind the sofa, you would benefit from an higher resolution. Assuming you can get content with that resolution.

You might get other benefits from 4k TVs though. For example, most brands put better panels in them (better contrast etc), have things like light sensors that adjust the TV after the lighting in the room and they have added HDR to them.

I don't really feel like the system is gonna suit my needs, at least for the first while. I'm a big RPG/open world guy, and Nintendo systems don't typically have very many of that sort of game. The PS4, on the other hand, has a ton of those games, and there are many great ones coming this year. So for now, I'm gonna stick with the PS4 (Especially considering the fact that I just bought one like a week ago, lol). Maybe down the line when the Switch library fills out, I'll pick one up. I love some of Nintendo's franchises, but for every game that I really love like a Zelda, Monster Hunter, or Mario game (Yes I know Mario isn't an RPG shush, I like games that aren't RPGs too), there are like 5-10 games that I couldn't care less about, at least at full price, both from Nintendo and the third parties. (Judging by third party games released on previous Nintendo systems, anyway). It does look like the Switch will cater more to the hardcore crowd than previous Nintendo systems have, though, so I could see myself picking one up down the line. For now though, there's not gonna be enough for me to justify a 400 dollar CAD purchase, not to mention the price of the accessories.

Not a big JRPG guy. Some are great, but I prefer things more along the lines of The Witcher, Dark Souls, etc etc, plus all the various open world games on the PS4.

I see. Why are you on a Nintendo forum? Are you a 3DS fan? Wii U? It seems strange you'd be on a Nintendo forum, much more specifically a Switch forum, if Nintendo doesn't usually make the games you enjoy.

Just honestly puzzled.

I like some of Nintendo's franchises, as I said, I'm just saying there's not gonna be enough initially for me to justify a purchase. I just didn't specify every Nintendo series that I enjoy.

After 3 years or so when the library has games like Mario, Animal Crossing, Monster Hunter, various Mario RPG's, maybe some good third party games etc etc, I'll probably buy one. As of right now, Zelda, Mario Kart, and Splatoon 2 isn't gonna cut it. So I'll just be waiting for the price to drop and for the library to fill out.
