Topic: Do we want Nintendo VR on NX?

Yes!

Just like the Wiimote and Wii U GamePad enhance certain genres with better controls, VR would be benefitting to the immersion and experience of first person perspective games.

Imagine F-ZERO VR from a cockpit view, a reboot of Star Fox Zero, or the next Metroid Prime game.
I would play the heck out of those, however it should be optional as not everyone can play in VR.
Also, it shouldn't be shoehorned into everything, only where it makes sense.

That's Augmented Reality, not Virtual Reality. The dope who wrote that article evidently doesn't have a clue.

"Gee, that's really persuasive. Do you have any actual points to make other than to essentially say 'me Tarzan, physical bad, digital good'?"

They don't describe AR. AR is the real world with virtual things in it. So the concept they are talking about has more in common with VR. It basically works in the same way the gamepad works in some games (i.e starfox).

I prefer a home console straight up, but I think they realize they get the most consistent success with a handheld, so why not use it to drive a next console in a different way? Gamepad + handheld in one. Then an external device will be a server for it providing extra processing resources and home play.

Yeah, Hololens, Illumiroom, Nintendo's camera + projector patent to me are AR. I think these projects aren't affordable yet though. Probably in the next 5-10 years they will be.

Personally I don't unless it's affordable and isn't necessary for the console. If the NX is 100% a VR console I am done with gaming.

I have tried VR for a while and it really doesn't do anything other than being a nuisance. Seriously, who's gonna turn their heads around and around till they break their necks with this thing? Its worse than the gyro controls on the 3DS (when done bad, like Lost World 3DS)

There is absolutely nothing that VR offers that the consoles won't. Think about this, how can you play Tetris on that damn thing? It'd be a nightmare.

After so long...I'm back. Don't ask why

Look, if you find my opinions off, you can always ignore them. No need to make a mockery out of it.

@Socar

OK, VR is a new tech but it should be obvious that it
in fact only benefits a handful of genres.

Most preferably all kinds of:

  • First-person games (fp shooters / fp horror / fp adventure / minecraft)
  • Cockpit view games (racing / flying)
  • TETRISPHERE
    These are the genres where VR adds to the immersion, experience, and atmosphere.

What it is not made for:

  • TETRIS

VR may not be made for Tetris, but Tetris would be a good fit on VR. a fixed viewpoint (so 0% chance of motion-sickness), a multiplicity of presentation options like having the pieces being office-block sized stone slabs slamming down into an open field, or a small wooden child's toy, or an egyptian theme, or underwater or whatever. It would probably be best played with a traditional gamepad with buttons, but Tetris is fairly simple, and could be done with gesture controls, at least for the early levels when things aren't going too fast...

so you want a gamepad?

VR needs to be tethered to the system rendering the scene. Latency is a massive issue for VR, far more than it is for just gaming in general. It wouldn't be like the GamePad... or at least you'd hope it wouldn't be. The wireless link would introduce far too much latency.

"Don't stir the pot" is a nice way of saying "they're too dumb to reason with"

I was commenting the article, which describe gamepad functionality. But they call it VR lite.

@Therad
My mistake, I obviously didn't read the full article. I just assumed they were talking about a google-cardboard type thing. You're right, what they're talking about isn't really VR. The 3DS, Wii U and every tablet/smartphone for a long time has had this "feature".

I don't think consoles are a good fit for VR. Not as long as the natural place for the console is in front of a TV in the living room. How often will it be like the PS-VR commercials, where the entire family is sitting in front of the TV playing the same game?

SuperPaperLuigi

@Therad I've got my P.C. configured so that I can kick back and relax, but there is something to be said for sitting down in front of a television, on a sofa, in a living room, with a console.

Maybe a hololense-style augmented reality headset for both general and a-symmetrical gameplay augmenting an existing T.V. or monitor.

A VR headset nullifies the TV completely. Basically you completely shield yourself from your surroundings in the room designated for company.
