Well yes, believe it or not they aren't usually evil masterminds planing to release physical versions of their digital games just to abuse costumers (because obviously that's why the do it, right?).
It's just that sometimes when their digital games are successful then the idea of making a physical release becomes viable.
@SwitchForce did it ever occur to you that publishers of physical media approach developers after digital release or that the developers couldn’t afford physical when they launched and were uncertain of how well the game would do?
Well afaik, for snipperclips, at least if you buy digital you get all the extra stuff for physical for free???
No, the "plus" content is paid DLC for the original digital release of Snipperclips.
In fact, the save data for the digital version of Snipperclips isn't even compatible with the physical version, which I'm sure would anger early adopters who may later wish to go physical.
"Gee, that's really persuasive. Do you have any actual points to make other than to essentially say 'me Tarzan, physical bad, digital good'?"
I refuse to'pay close to retail price for digital-only releases as it is my belief that those types of games should have been issued a slightly more expensive retail release anyway. AU$30 for Snipperclips was way too much in my eyes, but I was happy to pay full price (AU$45) for the subsequent retail release.
While Overcooked and Rocket League are considerably more expensive at retail (AU$60), I waited for physical releases of those as well (they cost about, if not more than three times that of their digital releases at the time of purchase as I believe that both games were on sale in the eShop at the time that they were released in stores).
So, yes, if a game costs over AU$30, I'll either wait for a heavy discount or pay up for a physical release later down the track. Otherwise, I'll probably skip it unless it's a game that I really want (and the overwhelming majority of eShop releases strike me as being painfully bland and mediocre).

I agree with the sentiment. It's why I no longer buy digital Indies if I think there's a chance it could release physically later.
However.
For big, top tier AAA releases I buy both physically and digitally, because I want all the best games on my system without having to carry around a caseload of cartridges. And half of them had 10 GB downloads anyways, so it wasn't really that much more space to just have the full physical release. And in cases like DQ Builders, it wasn't even 1gb for the entire digital game.
So ya. I just told myself I would hold off buying any indie games unless I am confident they will not see a physical release down the line.

I bought Portal Knights Switch in BOTH Digital Download and Physical retail with SAME USA Region. I spent US$ 30.00 for digital download and another IDR 450,000 or US$ 32.94 for Physical retail yesterday.
I bought BOTH because i really LIKE the game, so i couldn't wait to play once released in Digital download version first on 23 November 2017, while waiting the Physical release on February 2018. By the time i got the Physical release, my character (Job Ranger) had already reached Lv. 30.
I would gladly pay more for a physical version of any game, just as I would gladly pay for a F2P game to come to Switch, like the recent Radiation Island, which is great btw.
It's weird Team17 abandoned their physical ship before it even set sail.
They released Overcooked on retail, and Yoku's Island Express is still on its way (that's what I last heard).
But for the three Team17 games I really wanted (Yooka-Laylee, Worms W.M.D., and The Escapists 2) things look bad. For Escapists 2 I'm ok with a delay because it has plenty of bugs that should be fixed first. But for Yooka and Worms, two great Switch titles, it's a shame they're not out yet. And Worms actually got canned. I'm really disappointed with Team17's retail publishing.
When I talk about some of my best gaming memories of the 90ies my list always contains franchises such as Lemmings, DOOM, GTA1, Monkey Island, Super Mario Kart, Donkey Kong Country, Secret of Mana, Worms, etc. Worms was just in the same league back then.
It's sad to see some classics getting devalued to digital-only releases, especially when shovelware games, cheap ports, or even unknown IPs find their way onto the retail shelves.
And in N64 times, we would have paid 50-60 bucks for anything new that would come out of Rareware. Now that they have a new Banjo-Kazooie style 3D-platformer for a Nintendo console, it's not worth being on retail for 29.99-39.99 next to Super Mario Odyssey, Poi - Explorer Edition, RiME, and Lumo? I don't understand it.
News: I found that eShop is becoming Physical
Two eShop games of which one I have and another interested in have become physical cartridges now. I got both on pre-order now even though I bought one already from eShop. Now provides more then enough Facts we Physical buyers haven't passed on in old age or gather dust somewhere. I said and predicated to a certain extent that the Physical Cartridge will come even if there is still eShop. I for one like this option and if I have to wait for Physical-I will. I think now the iNdies and the developing parties are now starting to see this as a valuable options. Granted not all eShop can become physical edition but those that do have potential do have a good following.
Happy to report now 3 eShop games I got are becoming physical. So now it's plausible becoming physical instead of just eShop. The 3rd one has gone Physical editoin. It might not be all but the most sought after are becoming reality Physical.
