Topic: Did Motion control advertising hurt ARMS sales?

Hello. Many people are debating whether ARMS is a success on the Switch. That is of course a different topic to what I want to ask you guys, but we all know there is room for improvement. Right from the get-go I was a little worried about the marketing strategy for this game. That of course being the game sold on motion controls. Casual gamers as well as hardcore gamers are universally turned off by motion controls as we all know. Even though MC work well in this game, many people may have considered this to be the only way to play this. I personally think Nintendo should have showed off people playing this with a pro controller instead of having a lame "1-2 Switch style" advertisement campaign. I personally believe that motion control advertising slightly hurt the reputation of the game. What are your thoughts?

It's a new IP on a new console that sold a million units. This is objectively a success.

Wii Sports would seem to undermine your assertion that casual players are turned off by motion controls. Granted, it was more of a novelty then, but I would guess the antipathy comes mostly from people who are used to traditional controllers and don't like having to learn other ways of playing.

@Zyrac Wii Sports was the first game that had motion controls on a major console. Motion controls sold the system entirely. They didn't have a chance to gain a reputation yet.

@kkslider5552000 Correct but that's not the discussion. Would the game have done better if they marketed towards the majority of people who hate motion controls?

I think the main thing that would've hurt ARMS sales is Splatoon 2 releasing so close to it.

Probably. I know a lot of people dismissed it as Wii Sports boxing 2.0 at first, myself included. I learned otherwise because I tried the testfire and generally follow the gaming industry, so I now know what ARMS truly is, but I think a lot of people will just see the ads and stuff and assume it's Wii Sports boxing 2.0 without finding out that it's actually just as worthy as other fighters out there.

@Snaplocket It was close enough for me. I probably would have heavily considered buying ARMS if Splatoon 2 had launched later in the year.

Grumblevolcano

@Snaplocket That is close. Think about Splatoon, that big new IP had the entirety of summer 2015 to itself. If ARMS was given the same treatment, it for sure would've done better.

@KirbyTheVampire I agree with you there. As soon as I learned that the pro controller is a playable option I was immediately relieved. Then of course I learned about the characters and strategy, then marked it on the calender. Also, I find that if the television commercials showcased the bright and colorful characters then I think it would have sparked more interest. I don't know... I just thought the television commercial was terrible, it reminded me of 1-2 Switch. This game is amazing and I want it to be an ongoing series. I just finished playing 90 mins right now. I don't care for Splatoon, ARMS is much more intense.

@Grumblevolcano You make a good point, Splatoon has made a solid impact. Let's not forget about Mario Kart 8. People right now who are buying brand new Switch Consoles are going straight for Zelda, Mario Kart 8, and Splatoon 2. I hope the Test Punch this weekend can spark some interest and people can appreciate something different, competitive, and very intense.

Biff_ARMStrong

KirbyTheVampire

@Biff_ARMStrong Oh, there's a new testpunch? I'll be looking forward to that, then. I like the game a lot, but unfortunately there are so many games I'm interested in, and I can only buy so many. Maybe one day, though.

Some people are Too Lazy to Move their body.
Some of them are Sweat Allergic, never want to drop a sweat, tends to be a Couch Potato gamer. That's the Sad reality.
They need 80's Vibe about how to look cool by exercise and sweating.

@KirbyTheVampire Yep! If you check out the eshop it will be there at the top of the list to download. I believe it's this weekend. You can also check your news feed which is also gives details. I hope the test punch servers are separate from the regular ones. I don't want to see veteran players stomping all over new comers. I imagine it will be it's own thing.

@Anti-Matter The idea of working up a sweat with this game is alien to me. I enjoy motion controls, but my punches are just tiny little jabs. I don't move around any more than necessary. I suppose the idea that you need to flail around like a madman is part of why some people are put off...

@Anti-Matter Hey now, Some people like myself work 8 hours everyday and want to come home and play a relaxing game. Not play standing and be swinging my arms all around. Also,, motion controls simply don't play as well and in most cases not competitive enough

Biff_ARMStrong

Anti-Matter

@Biff_ARMStrong
Psst... a little trick.
You can sit down on sofa while using your Joy Cons to play ARMS. Open your leg while moving your hip to the left or right.
Well, better than standing for long time.

@Zyrac
Ah...
Maybe I use to play Dance Dance Revolution / Para Para Paradise / MaiMai that make me sweating like a rain.
I like to have some exercise and sweating after playing games like that.
And that's why I prepare my towel before I play games with Motions.

Anti-Matter

Biff_ARMStrong

@Anti-Matter Or better yet just play with a pro controller. 90% of the time when I'm playing the Switch it's in handheld mode. The best thing about the Switch for me is that I can listen to shows on television while playing games. There is no reason to ever use motion controls unless you personally find it fun. I don't find them fun at all. I heard they work great in Splatoon and the best players out there use them

Qwertyninty

It already sold over a million for a new ip... with a install base of like 4 million. That is a success. I can see it selling 2-3 million over the life of the console if it keeps momentum maybe more.

Qwertyninty

Biff_ARMStrong

@Qwertyninty That is correct, it is a success but there is always room for improvement. I think with better marketing this would have created a bigger buzz. Many people haven't even heard of this game or cared about it when it was first presented. The point I'm getting at is that barely anyone wants motion controls and Nintendo should just abandon the whole thing. It does more harm then good
