Topic: Did Anyone Else Cancel The Way I Did?

I was passing one of my local GAME stores last night at around 11.30pm after having just been out with a friend for the evening, and thought why not stop off at this midnight launch and see what all the fuss is about (I have never been to a midnight launch for anything), and to see if it was really true that GAME were not going to be offering any special types of offers, such as buy the Switch and get a Pro Controller half price, or buy Zelda and get another game for £25.00 etc etc etc.

GAME have generally done launch offers like this all the time, and even though the staff told me weeks ago there would be nothing like that with the Switch, it was one of those "I had to see it to believe it" things.

They were true to their word though to be fair lol, as everyone who already owns a Switch, or at least those who bought from GAME will attest to; if you wanted it, you paid full price for it, no exceptions, regardless of how much you were prepared to spend.

Now don't get me wrong, money is not the issue for me per se, I have £400 plus on a gift card, plus my Reward Points, and I don't think the console or games are THAT unreasonable for launch prices. It's the premium you pay for being one of the first as you all well know, which is fine. And I have never wanted a console as much as this since the first time I played on an N64. I think the Switch is superb for the record, even though I have never so much as held one.

However, there I was, standing there with my pre-order slip in hand, umming and erring as to what I wanted to do. I really didn't want to get a Switch JUST for Zelda, as I received my Wii U version today, and the only other game I wanted was Bomberman, which strikes me as a secondary game to Zelda, not really a £50.00 system seller like Zelda is, which is fair enough, not every game can be.

For anyone that missed out on the Wii U completely, or for anyone that is that much of a Zelda fanatic (of which I am not), then the Switch is perfect if you want to play the best version of Zelda; but I simply couldn't justify in my head eventually to spend £340 on a console and a game that I will have for the Wii U as well, or £330 so I could play Bomberman (as amazing as I'm sure the game is, as I LOVE Bomberman).

Not to mention the enormous back catalog of Wii U and Xbox One games that I haven't even started yet, so, I had to let my head over rule my heart, and perhaps be the first person in gaming history to turn up at a midnight launch to actually CANCEL my pre-order lol. Did anyone else do this? Has anyone ever done it before for a previous console?

If they had JUST had a few special offers on, or if Nintendo had made Splatoon 2 or Mario Odyssey a launch day title, then I would probably be walking to my local store now to pick everything up instead of typing this lol.

Instead, I am going to try and be sensible and finish the Wii U catalog first, and wait for a few games that interest me to be announced/released first. If Fire Emblem Warriors and Splatoon 2 are both released in Summer, then those, along with Bomberman will be enough to make me bite straight away.

You had a pre-order for Switch, but you ordered the Wii U version of Zelda. I think you decided against the Switch a lot earlier than you think...

On the contrary, I had my pre-order for Zelda since the 9th of March 2015, and my Switch pre-order since the 17th of January 2017

@GuruOfGreatness So you had more than 6 weeks to update your zelda order to Switch, but you didn't.

Yes. Because, as my initial rant said, I thought there would surely be some offers on other games and accessories. Plus, with Nintendo being Nintendo, I was also eagerly awaiting them to surprise us with another game that may have interested me at the last second.

Sadly that did not happen

I almost did something similar. Last night at midnight a friend of mine told me that I can purchase the console right at midnight from Amazon Prime Now. Which Amazon Prime Now is a dedicated site from Amazon that sells items and they are delivered within a 2 hour time frame window you select within the same day, within normal business hours(8AM-10PM). The only difference is they don't have everything Amazon's main site has. But they do have a lot of stuff, so they don't have any games or accessories for the switch console just the console itself.

So shortly after I purchased it and selected my time frame for delivery. I went to sleep for the evening.

At around 3AM EST I woke up and had my phone charging near my bed within reach of me. So I went back to Amazon Prime now site. And I went to my profile and was ready to cancel my order. But then I was up in the air about it like you! Should I cancel it or should I keep it was the question. Then I saw it was sold out on Amazon Prime now and pretty much everywhere else by now. But if I were to cancel the console and I changed my mind to purchase it I would be out of luck for a while! So I didn't want to ruin my luck being able to purchase it right at midnight without any hassles.

So I ended up not cancelling the order and I'm waiting for the console to arrive today between 10AM-12PM EST

Cool story. Good to hear you stuck with the order I hope you don't have any issues with it and love it as much as I undoubtedly will when I pick one up hopefully in Summer (unless I cave before then lol).

@GuruOfGreatness I do have to agree with you! The launch lineup is a bit weak! I mean Zelda is a great game! But in my opinion, I mean you can't only have just one game that is a top notch exclusive AAA title. That no other big games as well for another few months until Mario Kart 8 which is a port comes out.

I mean I like the console, and the whole concept of the console! But I think we're going to be bored really quick with just one game. I mean there is other games but they don't really catch my interest. I mean Super Bomberman catches my attention as well. But to me it's a 2nd tier type of game like. That will be a game I probably will purchase after Mario Kart 8 comes out. I probably will get Zelda first for now(and a very very slight chance that I get Super Bomberman as well today). Then Super Mario Kart 8. Sometime shortly after that purchase Super Bomberman. If Mario Kart 8 wasn't coming out later this month I probably would have purchased Super Bomberman today as well for sure!

Don't blame you if you've already got a Wii U. I personally don't have one, but I'm still waiting another couple months-ish for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

I don't blame you if you aren't convinced (it is a lot of money), but at the same time, think about it - why would Nintendo release any other AAA at launch that could potentially eclipse BotW's launch?
TP, that came at the Wii's launch, is one of the best selling modern Zelda's, and the other game at launch was Wii Sports. They're imitating the launch strategy here.

I have a chronic lack of time, for everything.

Now playing: Okami HD, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

I cancelled mine the day before. I am not a Wii U owner, so that was part of the Switch's appeal. I was cautious due to the lack of games available (that I couldn't already pick up on my PS4) but was still erring on purchasing. Then, the day one update dropped and news came out about friend codes, no achievements and no notable other features. Also, the joycon issue raised its ugly head. All these things are small, but they broke the camel's back. I thought, I'm done....for now.

@Luna_110

Couldn't agree more with the business strategy behind it, and I fully understand why they are doing it. What bigger and better game to launch with than a hugely anticipated Zelda (other than a huge Mario game the likes of 64, Galaxy or Odyssey perhaps)?

It's just to me, having owned a Wii U since launch and still having sooooooooo many games to finish, including Zelda now, that I just wish (selfishly in some respects I guess) that there was a top notch AAA Switch release day one launch title that wasn't Zelda, seeing as it's available on Wii U as well.

A Switch retail exclusive like Mario or Splatoon 2"probably would have done it for me I guess.

I sold my Switch and pocketed some money. That cash is my 'special offer.' I'll finish up my Wii U titles and pickup a Switch during the holiday 2018 season...just in time for a system bundle and price drop.

I was the opposite. I decided that I was not going to get a switch due to the launch lineup and already owning a Wii U I could get Zelda BotW on it. At 7am launch day I decided I wanted one so I drove to walmart and was lucky enough to purchase the last one.

Nice I nearly did that too, especially as mine would have been paid for solely using GAME gift cards and Reward Points. I have £400 store credit in total. But I didn't do that in the end as I didn't want to seem like a scalper, and TBH, I don't think anyone in the UK would pay more than the asking price for one (perhaps a tiny bit) as they are still easy to obtain here priced as normal.

I wish I could wait until Christmas 2018 too, but it's highly unlikely. Christmas 2017 I think I could just about do lol

Dang, I envy you guys who have time to get through numerous games during a launch period (couple months). I only have Zelda and 1,2 Switch right now, and I'm already worried I won't be ready to move onto Mario Kart Deluxe when it comes out in April! (Because I really want to get to Bomberman R and I Am Setsuna in between. And Snipperclips. And Fast Racing. Argh!)
