Well thanks for the feedback, guys.

And SlyPlayr09, I haven't pulled off the Kamikaze challenge (hitting another player by letting myself explode with a TNT crate).

Man, though... Online is brutal. I usually get a great lead off the line and through the first turns, but then I just get destroyed by everyone taking their turn to shoot me with weapons. And shoot me again before I can move again. I really wish there was a no-weapons online race option.

So, is leading the game off the line and into the first turns a bad strategy for CTR online races?

Yes, online is brutal! I have lost many times due to the unpredictable item handout (I've grown to really dislike the clocks, masks, and blue orbs). I usually try to gain a lead at the beginning of each race, but it might not be the best thing to do on certain tracks. For some reason I get disproportionately pummeled on Jungle Boogie and Blizzard Bluff towards the start. Try hugging the the turns as closely as possible and do your best not to drive in a straight line. Besides those points, I can't think of anything else besides mastering powersliding and praying for decent items.

On the topic of online play, there has been one thing that I really don't understand. The lack of a ranking system is really disappointing. It's extremely easy for experienced and pro racers to clock out many of the other players on certain tracks such as Electron Avenue and Twilight Tour. I've had a few, rare races where I've clocked out everyone else. Before the Grand Prix, I would often wait at the finish line so the other players would get credit, but the system then began to send everyone immediately back to the lobby after I crossed. It's like the game punishes newcomers while simultaneously giving experienced players the guilt trip.

Has this bothered anyone else here? I personally think that the Grand Prix has been great, but the matchmaking (or lack of) really detracts from the overall enjoyment.

I haven't bought the game yet but I really would like a ranking system for online gaming too. That way everyone has a good time and are able to get Wumpa coins. Some players play a bit dirty though, like some MK8 folks going backwards just to punish you with an item even if that makes them lose the race. Have you guys met them?

@BlueOcean,

Yeah, in Nitro-mode you can switch between characters while in classic you are stuck to the character you chose at the start. My feeling is that if you had chosen Crash or dr Neo in classic (medium difficulty) it would have been a pain. Now that I am playing with Ami (I prefer Tiny tiger, but he doesn't give you extra nitro for the championship) everything works much better. She's much faster, while still good at turning. What a difference with diddy kong racing, where the fast characters could barely turn (they where to heavy).

Oh and one last thing about the "glitch", it might be my fault. When you choose a character you also have to chose his/her skin. When you don't do that might be the reason why you can't confirm a character sometimes.

And one last thing about the rewards: You only get a small bunch of Wumpa-coins after a race, more in online it seems (I don't have online). The stuff in the pitstop is very expensive, it takes ages to unlock. And those championship characters that you can unlock by earning Nitro, there are also ones you can buy in the pitstop. But there are different versions, so that too takes ages to buy. As for the championship: Tomorrow or the day after I guess I have finished silver. Hopefully I can finish gold just in time. We'll see.

@Henmii Nice, I'll play Nitro medium mode then. In Diddy Kong Racing I use the brake and R button a lot for turning.

@BlueOcean,

Probably redundant to say, but powersliding is different. You have to first hop with R, and during your slide you have to press L at the right times. That way you can get up to 3 powerboosts. Its tricky. I haven't used it that much so far because I easily mess up (like sliding in the wrong direction, or crashing in a wall).

And while I used Ami on a couple of normal races in adventure mode, I haven't done any relic or ctr challenges in adventure mode yet. I guess that might be more difficult.

Clocked out? meaning the game ends before you finish the last lap? A couple times now, I've been upper middle of pack and the online race mysteriously ends. It's happened when I was 3rd of 7 or 8 racers. Happened in 4th and 5th place too.

Regarding a ranking system, I don't think this is what you want, but just in case you haven't seen it: main menu, highs scores, you can see your times versus the best times, and versus best times of your friends.

@BlueOcean mentioned "playing dirty". I keep getting the in-game survey question, "did you have fun in that race?". But never once has the survey question prompt come up after I've had a terrible with an online race with an overkill of weapons making it impossible to place anywhere but last.

I have Nitro Kart on GameCube and I didn't have many issues playing it. Some people here have told me that power sliding is the same on CTR but CTR is faster. Nitro Kart is a bit slow indeed.

@Woomy_NNYes Yes, the game usually gives players thirty seconds to reach the finish line after the player in first place completes his/her final lap. That's probably why the race would suddenly end for you on some occasions. If a player knows all the quirks of a track and links his or her powerslides in rapid succession, it can grant significant leads on courses like Electron Avenue and Hyper Spaceway.
Oh, and I do know about the high score section, but thank you for pointing that out. Anyway, I hope you'll enjoy the Grand Prix.

Gosh, by the time I get CTR in a month or so and without a ranking system I should not even bother playing online, I'll be destroyed in a few seconds.

Grand Prix, you say?... I've GOT TO HAVE THE ROCKET KART!!!!!!
I'm 1000 Grand Prix points from unlocking access to buy the Rocket kart. I'm so close

@BlueOcean Not necessarily. As long as you practice beforehand, you should do fine. Also, I can only refer to the matches that I have played, so I don't know what some of the other groups are like. When I first got the game, I focused on the adventure mode and time trials. If you can complete those, you should do really well online.

@Woomy_NNYes Yes, the rocket car is great! If you're only that far from unlocking it, you'll be getting it really soon.

Yesterday I defeated Pinstripe on medium (adventure mode), man that was hard! Strangely though, I defeated Oxide on my first try. Pretty easy. But I know there's a rematch, wich is probably much harder.

And about the update: Its rubbish. I mean, the loading times are slightly shorter. But on the expense of server-connectivity it seems. Going to the pitstop takes longer, and going to the grandprix-screen takes ages.

On a sidenote: I have almost finished the grandprix. Only 1 or 2 days till I have the last golden price.

@Woomy_NNYes set up a 2 player battle with no AI and TNT as the only weapon. Lay the crate, drive into crate and park up next to your unmanned player 2 and voila

Edit: just realised you posted that a while ago and you've probably done it by now! Not sure if it was a time limited challenge anyway

I've done that. Don't sweat it. You're good

On another point.... On vacation here, and mk8 was put in, and man, Mario kart 8 feels SO slow now. Dare i say mk8 feels inferior to ctr. I never thought I'd like another kart racer over Mario Kart 7 & 8. But, here we are.

Ok fellow forum friends. Can anyone explain how I did this on CTR? At a hairpin in CTR, when I landed a little jump turn, I got a crazy instant boost that ricocheted me another direction at the 4-5 second mark, which was an amazingly fast way get around this hairpin. Anyone know how to do this? I haven't been able to reproduce this. Look carefully, there's even a sonic-boom-like boost cloud when I ricochet turn. (if youtube shows a low res video, set it to 720p to see the boost cloud) I land drift boost wheelies all the time, but this isn't anything I've seen before.

I'm Megumi on the left side of the screen

@Woomy_NNYes I make it around the turn by both tapping the brake button and turning while in midair. I believe that's how you made it around the hairpin without loosing your speed boost.

“As always, the Pit Stop will be stocked with new and returning characters and cosmetic items, which players can unlock using Wumpa Coins*. With all this content available, there will also now be a way for players to fast-track their Wumpa Coin collection if they like. Starting in early August, players will have the option to purchase Wumpa Coin bundles from their game console stores to supplement the Coins they earn by playing. This option won’t change the game’s core mechanics players will still earn Wumpa Coins by playing the game in any mode, just as before. They will just able to purchase additional coins if they choose.”
