Had a go this morning. In all honesty I'm not the biggest Crash fan but I really want to give the series another shot.

...and I'm impressed. It plays really well in handheld mode, and imo controls a lot better than on the PS4 for me due to the analog stick placement.

Maybe my thoughts will change when I get to the more frustrating stages...

Will be picking this up later today. The port looks great. My only fear was that they'd force us to download part of the game despite buying it physically. With that out of the way it's a day one buy for me.

Looking forward to: No More Heroes: Travis Strikes Again

I...have found one thing that really bugs me about this port: Reflections.

Or rather...the total lack of. Water doesn't reflect, at all. The ice in snow levels, never reflects. Its just a hard texture. The windows in Future stages are just flat steel textures with exceptionally blurry silhouettes of far off buildings in.

I dont think that was a sacrifice that had to be made to be honest...

That and the messages from villains in Crash 3 have heavily downgraded textures, so bad Tiny looks plastic. Dont know why they downgraded those with so little going on in those scenes.

Really fun - I played some of the levels back in the day, but I never actually owned the games, so this is the first time playing through everything.

Almost finished the first game. Performance and graphics are incredible, but that's just me and I'm not a tough one to please when it comes to less important stuff like that (just my personal opinion).

Criticisms based only on the first game so far:

The gameplay and input response times are mostly solid, though I have this caution: the Crash games have never and still are not as impeccable as a lot of Nintendo platformers. If you're expecting Mario or Donkey Kong-level precision, you're not gonna find that here. The weight of Crash himself as a character feels good with his jumps and spin move, but obstacle hit boxes and platform visibility/tangibility is sometimes an issue. Also bouncing very high on some of those boxes is honestly one of the most frustrating things I've had to do in a platformer in the last couple years. The controls and parameters of Crash's movements definitely take some getting used to. I want to use the word "stiff" to describe, but that's not entirely accurate. Small movements are difficult to do, but broad motions feel very good. The boulder stage in the first world, for instance, when you are constantly running toward the camera and jumping felt very good to me. But some of the later stages and especially harder bonus stages that require precise box jumping and smaller movements made me frustrated.

Also, the nature of the pseudo-3D world/perspective can mess with you until you replay levels and start figuring out some of the tendencies. The "2D" scrollers were some of the toughest for me until I got used to the sense of 3D depth that is always there, which is VERY important if you want to find all of the secrets and boxes or get fast time trials.

But this is just based on Crash 1, like I said, and obviously that is a pretty old game at this point. Just some honest feedback from a platformer fan to anyone thinking about a purchase!

I'm wondering if anyone else can verify this.

I was playing in tabletop mode, using a Pro Controller. The Joy-Con were still attached to the console.

I decide to go into handheld mode, so disconnect the Pro Controller by turning it off. At this point, the Switch OS recognises it's in handheld mode.

Crash however, just tells me to reconnect the controller, even after removing and reattaching the Joy-Con to the console.

Okay it gets better. If you're playing docked with a Pro Controller, and you swap to handheld, the game doesn't recognise the Joy-Con. Even if you disconnect the Pro Controller.

@Knuckles-Fajita I noticed this. I guess it can always be resolved by going to the controller menu - it's a little inconvenient but no major loss. Maybe it'll be fixed in a patch?

@rallydefault I'll have to second this. My main issue with Crash (likewise based on the first game, I've only played the one so far) is the physics and the often-less-than-ideal perspective. It's still perfectly enjoyable despite this, just something to keep in mind, and I'd understand if it put many purple off the game (I was put off at first).

@Buizel It WASN'T fixed by going to the controller menu. The game has to be rebooted. Going to the controller menu didn't help. The system itself knows, but the game doesn't care.

@Knuckles-Fajita hmm that is strange. I think I'll give this another go next time I play.

@Buizel I mentioned it in my impressions piece.

Honestly this port reeks of lower effort. It feels very "Get it out".

@Anti-Matter : Each game has a separate menu with their own save data.

I found the volume to be pretty quiet, actually. Much quieter than most Switch games.

"Gee, that's really persuasive. Do you have any actual points to make other than to essentially say 'me Tarzan, physical bad, digital good'?"

@Knuckles-Fajita
I don't agree with that assessment. What else about it feels "low effort" to you aside from the controller swapping?

Haruki_NLI

@rallydefault In place of downgrades, like lower quality reflections, they flat out removed them, which actually runs counter to the level in Crash 3 that in other versions uses that feature.

Additionally in warp room dialogue, the lack of fur on characters is alarmingly noticeable despite those scenes being a floating head and a background, so why that cut was made is bizarre.

It feels like this game simply had aspects cleaved away to guarantee it would run, rather than downgrading or optimising it to keep most of the effects intact at a lower quality. I do believe the same level of performance could be met with reflections enabled and SOME fur textures.

I mean for god's sake the game has volumetric lighting in some levels.

@Knuckles-Fajita
I see. You don't believe these things needed to happen to get the game to run at a constant fps (which it does)? This is a game that many in the industry thought couldn't even run on Switch hardware.

Just a personal note: I haven't noticed any of the things you've mentioned, and I don't even know what "volumetric lighting" is. I certainly don't play my games and throw my controller in frustration while bellowing, "Gyahhhh!! Volumetric lighting! How dare they!?!?!"

Though that image makes me chuckle. Also makes me glad I'm not at that point in my gaming life lol

Just curious: Do you play the game side-by-side with its version on one of the rival consoles? You seem so into the visual comparisons that such a setup seems likely. That or you're regurgitating rantings from some Youtuber.

@rallydefault Ive been playing the games my entire life, so with, lets say the reflective surfaces, the fact they are gone is even a departure from the original. Where there were windows are now....black textures.

Volumetric lighting is "God rays". You know, light shafts. That's something I'd actually have cut instead of part of the level aesthetic entirely.

This isn't a game many in the industry didn't think could run. Activision never even bothered to try. Thats not a case of "It wont run", thats "It wont run but take our word for it".

EA said the same thing last year with Frostbite before revealing they hadn't TRIED!

See how it works? But I do believe, with more work and time, some of these features could have been retained. Not to the same quality, but retained.
