Topic: Considering the 1tb microsd for Switch.

Hey guys,

Apologies if this is inappropriate to this sub-forum. I wanted to ask if anyone else has had the 1 terabyte microsd for their Switch and if it’s perfectly fine.
I’m considering to pick one up as i am a big digital downloader.

However as the only other article is the guy who had his Switch melted upon booting up the system.
And given that people who have successful/normal operating SD cards are not gonna be talking about it much online.

I wanted to know if they are safe or not, if other people are sporting them and are working perfectly fine for them.

The only real risk you run with SD cards is that you can be scammed by having a card report more capacity than it actually has. If the price is too good to be true it probably is. I would also generally strongly advise against super high capacity cards because SD card prices follow an exponential curve. You're far better off buying the storage you need now and then getting a larger card a couple of years from now.

As an example when the Switch launched I could have spent ~$230AU on a 256GB card. Instead I got a 64GB card for ~$30AU, then when that was getting full about a year and a bit later I got a 128GB card for my Switch for ~$50AU. If I needed 256GB now it'd cost ~$50AU and I would have spent $100AU less and had two spare cards for other things.

So yeah, get a 256GB card now because that's a good value $/GB spot in the market now. If you fill it up in a couple of years? Get a 512GB card and that should at that pace last you another couple of years. Then do the same two years later for the 1TB card and you'll have spent FAR less than you would getting 1TB now.

@Neoguardian86
Mine is 128 GB Sandisk Speed 100.
My Switch games are 99% physical so 128 GB is more than enough for me.
Better consider less than 1 Terrabyte Micro SD card and try to play Switch games in physical copies to minimalize GB usage.

I believe a few of the users here mentioned getting the 1TB card, and to my knowledge none of them have reported any issues. I’m also looking into getting one, but the price is gonna have to come way down first.

The only advice I would give is to buy the card directly from whatever store you choose to buy it from. Like actually go into a store and buy it, or if you’re getting it online from somewhere like Amazon, make sure you’re buying it directly from Amazon (or whoever) as the seller and not a third party seller. People run into problems when they unknowingly buy counterfeit cards, but buying directly from a major retailer should allow you to avoid that risk.

Where I live, I can currently get three 512GB cards for the same price as one 1TB card. I personally wouldn't go for the one with most storage. Prices go down fast and you probably don't need that much space right now. And even if you do, you still have the option to go for multiple smaller cards, unless you really need to have all your games in one place.

I tend to upgrade my card as it gets full. I have a 400GB card currently. I need to get a bigger one later this year but by then the 512GB card will be a bit cheaper too. I have plenty of time to find a good deal. I can also give my previous card to someone else in my family who needs to upgrade theirs or put it in one of my other devices. Back when my 64GB card on my 3DS got full, I went and bought a new memory card for my Switch since its card was also pretty close to full. Killed two birds with one stone.

Also, as far as I know, Switch should handle 1TB cards just fine. I'm pretty sure at least one user here has one.

It's its, not it's.

@Anti-Matter the deal is i'm overseas, specifically Saudi Arabia, so while game shops will have some Switch games, i can never rely on them being here on time for release, being same price (let alone cheaper) as they are in the US, nevermind if they show up or not at all.
so i've gotten very used to being nearly all digital now. my digital stores (not just for Switch but Apple, Sony, Microsoft, Steam) are all set to the United States.

Because also i have to deal with possible censors here where games will just not be delivered here, because of a ban.

@Neoguardian86 During black friday sales in November, I recall someone here in the US (a nintendolife site user) mentioned that they picked up a 1T Sandisk when it dropped to $200US. And never reported any issues. I've never heard anything bad about 1T cards. As far as I know, the only problem with micro sd cards is finding legitimate cards -There are a lot of fake ones out there. Finding a trusted source is the key.

EDIT: Ah! found it. It was @Ryu_Niiyama that got the 1T card. As far as I know, Ryu_Niiyama never had any problems with the 1T micro sd card.

This was the amazon page Ryu_Niiyama ordered from, I believe. Since you're in Saudi Arabia, I pasted the link so you could see which card they bought.

@Woomy_NNYes thanks man, i'm considering when i get paid this month dropping for it. i'm just concerned about damaging the Switch. it's not just that the Switch is literally my favorite Nintendo home system since the SNES, but also because i managed to get lucky and got it on my first big trip in Japan at a Yodabashi in Akihabara. so it's got sentimental value to me.

I currently have a 400 gb in there and have not had any issues with it but i know i'm nearly getting full.

@Neoguardian86 some of those reports were falsified stories so unless you can document those stories by independent verification don't take those stories. MicroSD been used for some time and unless those are fake or counterfeit cards that would be where those would fall in. If anything read whom is selling the card and if it isn't a ScanDisk OEM 1tb then and the price it too good to be true then it's fake. I have a 400gb but want to get the 1tb so I can reload all my Switch games back and if I did that with the 400gb it probably not hold all of them.

I believe the Switch was confirmed to be able to support as high as 2TB cards, if and when they ever hit the market. I'm waiting for the 1TB card from a company I trust, like sandisk, Samsung or Transcend, to drop below the 100 dollar mark. For now, 400GB has been enough for me.

I got a 256GB on a Black Friday sale back in November. It’s more then enough. You don’t need anything remotely that big, but if you’re a digital-only guy than yeah. @skywake

@CTmatic I disagree, my 256 gb isn't even close to enough. Honestly I wish I paid a bit extra for the 512 gb one. 1tb is not needed I think.

I definitely need a 1tb card at least. As an all-digital gamer, I maxed out my 400gb card a loooong time ago. Most of my big games are now archived to make space. I’m just waiting for the 1tb cards to drop down to maybe half the current price (down to circa $125) before I bite.

At the end of the day there’s no right or wrong answer here. It all depends on us individually. I know, an obvious statement. 😉 @Cissero

256GB is way more than enough for me because I’m a physical copy person 100%. I like seeing my games lined up on my shelf. I also fell in the “trap” as I call it and have also seen articles and polls online on multi-console gamers that cave into Switch versions more just for the handheld option. I did that with maybe 10 games that I ultimately traded back into GameStop because I started playing my PS4 Pro again now to. I have around 16 Switch games (physical) and 3-4 digital where I had no choice. (Overwatch, Alien Isolation, and a few Indie’s) With these 20 something games installed I have around 101 free GB still. Since I’m back to playing PS4 to and not just impulse buying for Switch I’m perfectly set for a lot more Switch games with memory since I go physical.

@CTmatic That's very true haha. I realised that as well after reading the comment of the guy that filled his 400 gb+ card
You make a lot of valid points

@CTmatic I put this on the if you can afford the bigger get the bigger capacity. When the 1tb goes down if this year I might get one unless I get it ahead of time since I got alot of Switch games I need to reload and some Digital to redownload. Having more is better then having less when the price it right.

SwitchForce

CTmatic

I hear ya, but that’s beyond unnecessary for me. 1TB? When I’m a 100% physical copy buyer. The storage space for physical cartridges are usually minimal, especially first party games. My 256GB card is already too big so I’m fine. If I only owned a Switch and wanted 50+ games and tons of digital then I’d consider it, but that’s so not the case. My PS4 Pro also gets play time. @SwitchForce

Ryu_Niiyama

I’ve had my 1TB since last November and I have had no issues. Honestly if it hits 200 again I’ll buy a second one for my laptop. I am about 60 percent physical but Jpn games, fighters and indies I buy digital. So I need the space.

That is a fake story they bought a knockoff brand and blame a legit company for it.

This is purely false story a legit 1tb microSD doesn't cost anywhere close to 20eu this trolls should stop giving out misleading information. Try closer to 300eu for a 1tb card.
