Topic: Considering a Nintendo switch for my sons Christmas gift

We are considering getting a switch for my son( 11) for Christmas. It’s been some time since we owned a Nintendo console and not really sure what we need as far as accessories and couch co op games.

Game wise we would like some that 3 players can play couch co op, while Mario kart is an obvious choice along with marvel ultimate alliance 3 not sure what else would be good. All of us enjoy a variety of games so open for pretty much anything.

Any advice as to what we should need accessory wise. Seems to be a lot out there so kinda lost lol.

Any thoughts are appreciated

Well, you don't need much.... You'd only want a travel case if you plan to take it out. Obviously, if you're going to be planning multi-player, you'd probably want either an extra pair of Joy-cons or a pro controller, etc.
Most of the multi-player games should allow up to 4 playing on 1 Switch, just check whichever ones you're interested in.

Hi!
I can recommend some Nintendo Switch games for your family.

Multiplayers (Up to 3 - 4 players)
1. Overcooked 2
2. Super Mario Party
3. Mario Tennis Aces
4. Go Vacation
5. Puyo Puyo Tetris

Two players
1. LEGO City Undercover
2. Portal Knights
3. ARMS
4. Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu / Eevee
5. 1-2-Switch

Do him a favour, don't wait until Christmas - a lot can happen in 6 months.

You guys had me at blood and semen.

A good screen protector is also pretty useful. And find a shop where they'll put it on the Switch for you, instead of having to muck around with it yourself. Some people may be up to the task, but I always let the professionals take care of it, since they do it hundreds of times, instead of the single time that I myself would do it.

As for games, there's hundreds more, but these come to mind:

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Mario Party, Mario Tennis Aces, Splatoon 2, Mario+Rabbids Kingdom Battle, Snipperclips, ARMS, Rocket League, Super Smash Bros Ultimate, Captain Toad's Treasure Tracker, Pokken Tournament, New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe, Kirby Star Allies, Lego Marvel Superheroes 2, Sonic Mania, Rayman Legends, Hyrule Warriors, Overcooked 2, Minecraft, Puyo Puyo Tetris, and even 1-2 Switch, provided you can get it for a bargain price, otherwise it'll just be too expensive for what it is.

@Ruthless4u
Accesories:
-More controllers. You need either 1 joy con pair, or 2 more pro controllers. There are cheaper wired pros, but they don't work in handheld or tabletop mode.
-a carrying case is a must have
-a screen protecter, just in case.

Games:
-Smash Bros Ultimate (not really co-op, but team battles are fun)
-Kirby Star Allies
-I heard Overcooked 2 is good
-New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe
I can't think of any major 3+ co-op games, but for 2 player...
-Pokémon let's go Pikachu/Eevee
-Yoshi's crafted world
-Super Mario Odyssey

I would also reccomend NOT waiting until Christmas. There's a bunch of games coming out soon, and you will miss a LOT of good games due to being buried by new ones. Trust me, it's worth investing as soon as possible.

Other multiplayer CooP games than the ones that have been said:

  • Super Bomberman R (8 players max)
  • Diablo III (4 players max)
  • For the King (3 players) - I've played this countless hours on the PC with two friends and it is great if you're into fantasy/Game of Thrones stuff or just board games even. Comes out on Switch tomorrow actually so unless the port is really bad it's a definite recommend.
  • Trine 1 + 2 (3 players)
  • Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime (4 players)
  • Death Squared (4 players)
  • Castle Crashers (4 players)

And then there's the Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remaster that's coming out this year which is 4 players and I would say it plays similarly to Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 though the theme is more fantasy.

And also if you can hold out until Christmas you might get to buy the supposedly new Switch versions that are rumoured to come out, or at least have the option to. Also the regular Switch might get cheaper when the newer one gets released.

For accessories then obviously there's the controllers which there are many to choose from. The good third-party brands are usually Hori, PowerA or 8bitdo.

If you're already fond of your controllers from other systems like xbox and Playstation then a mayflash Magic-ns can let you use 1 of those per adapter on the Switch. This might be good for someone who could take time to get used to a new controller. I have this adapter and can recommend it.

We are waiting on Christmas because I get a decent bonus check at the end of November.

I’m hoping to pick up any needed accessories now and wait for the check for the system itself and 4-6 games. Maybe luck out on Black Friday/cyber Monday for a decent bundle or game sale.

Thanks for the replies everyone

Tempered glass screen protector is the main accessory to have and maybe another joy con.
If you wait till Christmas. I’m sure all the games you want will go cheaper.

You can’t go wrong with these games

We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.

I'd wait for sales, especially at Target and Best Buy. They run sales including Black Friday on games.

Aww How sweet of you That's nice..

I Got nothing.. oof.

The Joy-Con that come with the system can either be combined to be a controller for one player, or seperated to be controllers for two players, so for a third player you'd either need a Pro Controller, or an extra set of Joy-Con (which naturally would up your potential player count to 4).

I think most others have got the games covered, but I'd second a shoutout for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Go Vacation, Captain Toad, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe, & Kirby Star Allies.

Don't completely discount single player titles though, as if you set each kid up with their own profile on the Switch, they can each have their own save files.

Currently Playing:
Switch - Blade Strangers
PS4 - Kingdom Hearts III, Tetris Effect (VR)

That’s what i meant, probably could of phrased it better lol.

Gotta disagree on sword and shield. I doubt team rocket is coming back again, considering they just did for the last 2 games for very different reasons. A couple is also over 700 new pokemon. Just saying.

@Ruthless4u : The Let's Go games are a fine entry point, and includes the fun ability to use motion controls to capture Pokémon as well as encountering Pokémon via the overworld, whereas Sword/Shield reverts to the conventional series of games.

Having said that, Sword/Shield will include exponentally more content for one's buck, including hundreds, if not in excess of 800 potentially accessible Pokémon whereas Let's Go is limited to the first 151 (plus two Pokémon that can only be acquired via Pokémon GO).

Given his age, he will probably enjoy Sword/Shield a lot more, and its plot and characters will coincide with the upcoming series of the television series as well.
