Topic: Confusion around battery banks to play and charge Switch

Hello

I am looking to get a battery bank for my switch. I already have an older Anker Astro E6 20800mAh https://www.anker.com/uk/products/variant/Astro-E6-20800mAh-P... but I am unsure whether this will be good enough to charge my switch while playing. I've been looking at getting a new battery bank but I keep getting conflicting information. Do I need Power Delivery to be able to charge while playing? And Is the RAV Power battery bank safe to use with the Switch as I saw on Reddit there were issues with it?

Also I just did a search for battery bank threads on this site when I came across this thread https://www.nintendolife.com/forums/nintendo-switch/nintendo_s... which recommends the more expensive Anker over the RAVPower because the RAVPower requires the Switch to be in sleep mode so does that mean I cannot play and charge?

I have an Anker PowerCore 20100 +. It has the USB C plug on it and enough output to play and charge. The Switch does take quite a bit of charge from the battery bank when I'm playing it. Much more noticeable than if charging my phone.

@DTMOF84 If I'm correct the thing to remember is that all battery banks will charge the switch but not all will charge it while playing? so I could just use a regular bank as the Switch battery until it runs out then it will revert to using the Switch's internal? Well at least that is what I gathered from Digital Foundry's video. I'm going on 11 hour flight soon so obviously the Switch alone wont last for the duration but then again do I really need play and charge because it'll take about 4-5 hours to charge while playing using a PD supported bank so I will still be attached to a battery bank for that amount of time. Ultimately I should probably consider a smaller bank such as the mini Anker Powercore 10,000 to save space on the airplane tray table.

That sounds about right. I have a smaller battery bank for our cell phones that I used on the Switch before I bought the Anker. It just seemed to slow the battery drain on the Switch itself

The Switch does require a more powerful battery to charge while playing. I use an iMuto 30000mAh that I got from Amazon. The thing is a brick, but powerful enough to charge the Switch while playing AND charge my phone and Asus tablet at the same time. Cost about 50 bucks. Charging only the Switch, it gives me about 14-15 hours of play before needing to be recharged itself. It can easily recharge the Switch, my phone and tablet, all twice on a single charge. The same company has smaller and larger versions as well. I have used mine for months now and am very happy with it.

Only downside I might mention is that, since it stores so much power, it takes a LONG time to recharge. From 0 it can take 6-10 hours depending on the cord I use.

14 to 15 hours of play time? Thats pretty impressive. I've never actually timed my Anker when I use it. But I can easily watch the battery meter drain on it while playing for a bit.

As far as I know it largely depends on the voltage/amperage output.

Power banks that output a low V/A (aka most of them) will charge the switch, but probably not fast enough while playing. It will extend your playtime either way, but you'll eventually have to let the battery recover (or risk bricking your switch if it gets too low while charging).

What and how you're playing affects the results too.

There was a bug in the way the RAVpower powerbanks interacted with the system so that it would only charge with power delivery if you put the system in sleep mode first before plugging it in.

It would still charge either way but you would not get power delivery speeds unless you put it in sleep mode before plugging it in.

I am not sure if this is still the case but I make no guarantees and as such cannot recommend RAVpower for Nintendo Switch.

That said, there are some deals for USB-C PD power banks. I do recommend you use power delivery and not normal USB-C, because although normal USB-C is enough to charge your system and even enough to charge it while playing, it will only barely increase your percentage while playing. Whereas a power delivery battery can charge 0-100% in 3 to 4 hours while playing the most demanding games on full settings.

There is a deal going on right now for a 20,000mAh Anker USB-C PD battery which comes with an included USB-C PD wall charger, for just $79.99.

The wall charger is typically $25-$30 by itself so it's like getting the battery for $50-55

What do you mean by barely increase your percentage while playing?

@Tacanacy that means the Switch will run but stickily off the portable battery power where a power delivery battery will charge the switch so like the example above playing on the external battery for 3 hours will charge you switch so you can disconnect and have a full charged switch again
