This is probably a dumb question, but is there a way either through text, voice, the switch or the app, to communicate with a "friend" on your system?

@Ste unfortunately none that I know of. Maybe later this year when the online infrastructure is released.

As far as I know the only way to communicate with others at the moment is using the Switch Online app while playing Splatoon 2. I haven't used it myself so I apologise if this is a bit vague, but if you go to 'Online Lounge' in the lobby in Splatoon 2, it gives you the option to invite your friends to voice chat with you using the app. (It seems silly to me that the voice chat app only works while playing one specific game, but I hope this answers your question!)
