Never played a Civ. Is it a game you can have running in the background while you're doing something else and just tinker with every few minutes, or do you need to give it your complete attention all the time?

You guys had me at blood and semen.

When 4x games are ported to consoles, for me, it somehow loses something, like its less grander than when i play on PC. Cant really pin point why though.

I don't think we've ever had the full Civilization experience on console before. There was Civilization Revolution which was a stripped down version just for consoles, but never a full game like Civ 6.

It's turn-based, so it's entirely possible to play it in spurts, but you do NOT want to turn your back on it during the enemy's turn. By the time you're halfway through a game you're controlling an empire spanning one or more continents, and those pesky foreigners will wreck your $%@) if you don't keep an eye on them.

Especially Gandhi. NEVER take your eyes off Gandhi!

As long as this doesn't perform badly on the Switch, I'll be double dipping.

The style has been changed from V in so much as it's now more of a card game, with many buffs & nerfs being dealt out as you choose which Governments to enact, and within those, which social/military/economic cards to play.

The best part for me is the initial 50-100ish turns of discovery, empire building and penalty-free war-mongering. After that it becomes a technology race to the stars.

It was fairly obvious that they were looking to bring Civ VI to tablets and mobile devices when they chose the look of the game, I think.

That's one of the things i'm looking out for too, how well does it run.

The other thing to be aware of is that it appears the Switch version DOESN'T include the Rise and Fall expansion (yet). Not a deal breaker if you've never played Civ/Civ 6 before but harder to go back if you have played with it included on other systems.

Very disappointed that the Switch version will not have online play. Now this game has been relegated from a 1st day buy to getting it sometime down the road.

That's disappointing. I thought it was the complete game up to this point. Perhaps the expansions will be sold as DLC.

That is hard yes. I love when games include their expansions when released later on other platforms but the expansion is confirmed for the iOS version so it will be coming to the Switch later. I was hoping it would be on the cartridge but at least the base game and some extra civilizations are on it.

"Civilization VI for Nintendo Switch includes the latest game updates and improvements and four pieces of additional content which adds four new civilizations, leaders, and scenarios:

•Vikings Scenario Pack
•Poland Civilization & Scenario Pack
•Australia Civilization & Scenario Pack
•Persia and Macedon Civilization & Scenario Pack "

At least that is more than the base game

JaxonH

Wish they'd drop more info. They seem to be really quiet about this one.

@Mountain_Man
I think they might. But it might depend on how well the game does, too.

If not, as @Zuljaras said, it's still more than the base game. Quite a bit more, actually. I might care more if it was a normal console version release, but being a Switch version I tend to be much more forgiving with stuff like that. Simply because the benefits are so much more pronounced, and because even just the base game dwarfs any type of strategy game we've ever seen on a handheld system.

That looks great. Seems like Firaxis (or whoever did the port) made sure the interface would work well in handheld move. This is a text and numbers heavy game, but everything looked large and legible.

@Mountain_Man
It does look good.

This is a dream come true for me. I wanted Civ so bad, I got CivRev on DS (the 360 version wasn't BC on Xbox One), and imported CivRev2 English Asian version for Vita, then a PC for Civ VI.

I honestly can't believe they're bringing this game to Switch. It's EXACTLY what I wanted. We haven't had a full scale mainline Civilization on consoles since... ever, really. Unless there's some early entry on a retro console I'm unaware of.

Civ and Civ II were on various consoles. I've never played either of them on consoles though. No idea how in-depth they were. I would assume controls would be pretty darn clunky.

Civilization Revolution on the DS was actually a pretty good game. It was stripped down but still essentially Civilization at its core. But having the full experience on the go definitely has me excited. Between this Diablo III, Skyrim, and DOOM, I may never play games on my PC again!

Civ2 was on PS1 back in the day. I'm not sure if Civ1 ever came to consoles, and the PS1 port of Civ2 was horribly clunky. The controls just weren't there. To be honest, I'm a little nervous that even the Switch won't feel right for Civ. I've been playing Civ5 again on my PC to refresh my memory before the Switch release, and it just feels so right with keyboad and mouse. But hopefully this will work.

As far as content goes, I'm pretty confident that Rise and Fall will eventually be ported. In any case, you're already getting several more civs and scenarios than the base game on PC, so it should be enough content to keep all but the most hardcore 4Xers happy for a while. And the super hardcore fans are probably going to want to stick to their PCs anyway.

One more thing: CivRev will totally not prepare you for the real deal. I really recommend checking out an older Civ game on Steam instead, if you want to get ready for Civ6. This is not to say that CivRev is a bad game, but many things about it are so different from the mainline Civ experience that I personally was never able to get into it.

Isn't this a game where you can set up your own difficulty by adding enemies (and their strengths) or turn them off completely?
Usually Civilzation games have many variables to configure that can drastically change the difficulty of the game when you set up a new game. You could basically play the game any way you want and make it supereasy or extremely hard.

Also, it's not idle/mobile strategy, it's classic PC/videogame strategy where you're fully invested at all times. You just wait for a few seconds when the world is generated or when the NPCs have their turn.

As for Nintendo history: Civilization 1 and 2 were available on SNES and a remake released on DS.

Wow the interface has really evolved since III and IV, the last two I played. And this sure runs smoother than those did on my PC at the time..... (driver crashes galore! )

Though I still say Alpha Centauri was the best of the whole Civ series. I've been waiting decades for a sequel!

@JaxonH What's hilarious about this is PCs now get the "AAA blockbuster" games that used to be the domain of consoles, and they are now the main reason to build PCs. Meanwhile consoles are now getting all the deep numbers crunching games that were the bulwark of the PC golden age. So now you buy a console to play PC games and a PC to play console games.

As a longtime Civ nerd I'm gonna have to call you on that. Civ1 was ported to SNES, but Civ2 was not. It released near the end of SNES's lifespan, and its only console port was on Playstation.

Neither of those games was on DS, either. Civilization Revolution on DS was a whole new game that had some resemblance to the earlier entries, but it was not a remake but its own thing (too much so, IMNSHO).

Does a PC go with you to the toilet? No. No, it does not.
