I use to do military wins, but after a while they become kind of boring IMO. I mean, "build artillery, build archers, build tanks, demolish everyone" gets old. But going for a diplomatic, tech, or cultural win can be an interesting and difficult thing to pull off. Especially in multiplayer matches. Those can get cut throat.
It's a very good game. Very brutal on higher difficulties, but very good. Make sure you check your tech trees and plan things out. Also, don't ignore things like the culture tech stuff just because you want a military win. That's a recipe for having your cities change allegiance to whomever has a better culture that's near them.
What kind of wins do you all go for? I'll typically go for a cultural win in Civ V or a political win via being elected President of the World.
Cultural and scientific tend to suite my play-style. I usually end up pissing too many people off to win politically, and a military victory just feels like a slog.
My most interesting game of Civ V was as Japan. I had India right next to me, and I managed to keep them as my ally throughout the entire game, which was a good thing because they turned into a major military power and were able to protect me from all the other civs allowing me to focus on my tiny nation becoming a technological powerhouse. Amusingly, the game ended with me and my ally racing towards a scientific victory, which I managed to secure only a few turns ahead of him.
@FaeKnight Have you ever had a cultural win? I've tried a bunch of times but never ever succeeded. Pretty much gave up on that idea by the time Civ 5 came out.

Remind yourself that overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer.
Many a time. It's actually the easiest win type in Civ V. Just need to make sure you have a strong enough military to hold off all comers. After that focus on building Culture buildings and wonders that hold art and music pieces you're Great Artists and Great Musicians make.
So, Civilization VI is nearly upon us. I think I mentioned this a few months back, but I actually got a gaming PC just to play this game, although I quickly found out I wasn't very good at it. It was just so different to what I was expecting and I guess different to the type of game I'm good at. And because I had just got a new rig, I quickly got distracted by all the other new possibilities opened up before me, and unfortunately I just never made it back to Civ. So it's extremely fortunate this game is coming to Switch, because it will give me a second chance to get into this game.
This game is a very big deal. From the developers of X-COM, which I'm sure the people here already know, but most people who aren't familiar with the series probably don't. Just getting this game alone is a huge win, but to secure an exclusive console release is pretty mind blowing. What gets me is the fact very few people seem to be talking about it! I mean, I know it's a more niche genre being a strategy game and all, but there are a lot of core gamers on Switch. The guys buying Monster Hunter, Dark Souls, Diablo, Skyrim, etc.

I'm very keen for it, though I'm a bit cautious because I've seen no Switch gameplay or any hands-on previews. Would like a bit of re-assurance that it's going to work well.
You guys had me at blood and semen.
What better way to celebrate than firing something out of the pipe?
I'm reading this is brutally difficult. That's too bad... I usually play games for relaxation. Is there like a super-easy-story-mode on this?
It's an open-ended strategy game, so no story mode. It's a complex game with a lot of layers and moving pieces, so it might seem overwhelming at first even on the lower difficulty levels, but you'll get the hang of it if you keep playing.

Yes, I'm surprised how this game went "dark". We got an announcement, and then... nothing. I keep wondering if it's suddenly going to be delayed.
Its not going to be delayed. Its like 2 weeks away.
I thought I saw some gameplay released for it not too long ago. Maybe I'll google that and see if I can dig it up

I’ve been watching a Civilization 6 tutorial on YouTube from about a year ago, it seems to have lots of layers and has all sorts of difficulty settings
Very very interested to see how this translates both;
1.) Controls wise - could be a challenge
2.) Processing speed in late/endgame - crank up the map size and number of civilizations and watch a powerful PC struggle late on so curious to see how it fares on the lovely lovely switch
That aside do we know if the expansion is included btw?
Anyone interested who hasn't played a Civ game before, I cannot emphasise enough how enjoyable & consequently how much of my life I have lost to this series over the years - I started with the original Civ way way back in the early 90's and the fact it's still ongoing is testament to both the quality and addictive nature of the games (just. one. more. turn.). What I will say is that there isn't definitively a 'best' version with many people being split as to their favourite. I never imagined it getting better than Civ 4, but 5 finally wore me down when all of the expansions had released. Hand on heart I'd say the fully fledged 5 is still overall a better package than Vanilla 6, but 6 does change some stuff up sufficiently that I think newcomers will be more than happy just getting stuck straight into the latter - and don't worry, you can tone the difficulty right down whilst you get to grips with it!
Preload is live in NA. Less than 5gb. Well done...

When 4x games are ported to consoles, for me, it somehow loses something, like its less grander than when i play on PC. Cant really pin point why though.
