Topic: Cartridges vs. eShop?

I'm looking not for some short "eShop for me" or "carts are my thang", tell people why you think one is a better choice, here's mine...

I prefer cartridges, always have, for many reasons...
sometimes there are some games that just don't have the kind of "replay value" you expect, short or long term, so 1: I love to take my game carts and trade with friends or get store credit at certain gaming mega-chains to help with the cost of other games.
2: I like lending my games to my daughters as well as borrowing theirs, trading Switches is unrealistic
3: the download games cost the same as the physical carts, so no reason not to own a cart
4: physical carts can be transferred to other Switches if I need to send one in for repairs (which they erase your onboard content (not on sd card) because they have to reinstall the os then do some updates), speaking from experience, they give you instructions on re-downloading your games, but it's a pain in the tukus
5: I love to buy games used because if I don't like the game, I can take it back in like 3 days and get a refund or credit
6: I can rent new games to try out for only a few bucks and again, if I don't like, I'm out only $4

I have a few more, but I think I've said enough to explain why I prefer carts over eShop, so please tell me what you like in detail

Digital all the way for me, I am a minimalist and stacks of games would be clutter to me

I am also the kind of gamer that changes his mind a lot, for instance I play a game for a few minutes sometimes and change my mind and put something else on so swapping between games on digital is just more convenient

@jhewitt3476 Exact same way of thinking here ! ^^

The only "problem" that I have is your n°3 "3: the download games cost the same as the physical carts, so no reason not to own a cart"
I would say : " The most of the time, the download games cost MORE than physical games (which is a shame BTW)

I prefer buying physical because I can’t afford buying digital. I trade the games I don’t like.

We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.

Psychical for me because I know at some point the games on eshop will be unavailable to buy just like the wii.

@Cobalt I agree in a way, but I'm generally speaking about games that can't go on sale (not usually) nor be sold used, so yah, usually 99% of games available in both formats cost the same "MSRP" (Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price)

I do both. I mostly buy digital games because I don't have a car, so can't regularly get out to the local game stores in person. And while I could order online, I don't usually feel like paying shipping and handling. Not to mention it's more convenient to just close down the game and launch the next one, instead of having to remove one game cart, put it in the box, grab a new cart from it's box, and insert that into the system. And as mentioned, digital games don't clutter up the apartment. My shelving units are getting kind of full between books, dvds, blu-ray dvd, 360 games, xb1 games, PSOne games, ps 2 games, PS Vita games, gamecube games, 3DS games, Graphic Audio books, and so forth.

That said, I also buy physical because they take up less space on the system (only the save data) and don't have to be redownloaded if I had to clear up space on the system. Right now I only have one physical game cart for the Switch, and that's Zelda BotW. But I have Super mario Party on preorder through Gamestop, and it should be arriving sometime between the 6th and 9th. I also plan on getting a physical copy of Mario Odyssey and a few other games too.

@farrow000 that is a very good point.

@ValhallaOutcast not bad, I'm very bad, I love my carts, but I do have a lot of metal mint containers ("Al*oids"), full of games, I love, but it does get cluttered sometimes, but I'm ok with that, but great argument bro

@FaeKnight the part about the downloads taking up too much space is no kidding, I have the Doom cart, but I tried to do an update and just the update for the cart was 7GB !!! , and sdxc cards are not exchangeable between systems without going through an act of Nintendo Congress LOL

All digital on ps4 (close to 250 games) about half and half on switch. Just don't want the clutter and I'm not a collector. Only physical media we really have is books and a few dvds. Also with having kids makes it easy for them to switch between games and less chance for breakage. Im fortunate enough to have very fast internet so even if something has to be deleted and redownloaded is not really a big hassle.

@jhewitt3476
I like Cartridge better than digital download since i'm a collector also.

Carts because it keeps game manufacturer's honest: they make less profit. If we give in and go all digital they reap more profit. Stick it to them manufacturer's.

@Anti-Matter I'm not a collector, I just like the freedom to offload, borrow, trade and/or sell, if I collect, it's not out of the price or eventual sales value, but for me the replay value is top notch, I STILL play Zelda 1, F.F. 1, Castlevania 2, Super Mario RPG, ect.

@SMEXIZELDAMAN a most intriguing philosophy/motivation, thank you for your input sir

I would rather swap cartridges than microSD cards.

At least those cartridges can be used on multiple consoles.

And swapping cartridges wouldn't even qualify as an inconvenience in my estimation.

Physical as I let friends and family borrow games

We don't stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.

Ryu_Niiyama

I will do either or depending on the situation but in general...

Physical
-often cheaper than digital and for ease of importing (except the switch...I just eshop those games).

Digital:
Ease of access (best for games I know I go back to a bunch)
Many games are digital only
Discounts (gold coins and sales)
Ease of importing

@Silly_G because once you download games from your account onto an sd card, it is a tedious endeavor to transfer from one console to another because they are serialized to both your account and system and encrypted, Nintendo probably spent half of the development funds for the Switch on anti-piracy

Nemodius

@subpopz nice argument/s, honestly I will probably never get Nintendo online unless Super Mario RPG and a few other games that Nintendo never shares or re-releases

BTW, love your Mega Man pic, awesome !!!
