I'm playing the 3DS and Switch versions side by side and I'm totally hooked.
There are some minor differences between the two versions. There are certainly fewer enemies at times in the 3DS version, and in cherry stages, the number of Toads is limited to only two due to the limitations of the 3DS (as well as factoring in its lower resolution, I suppose). As a result of this, the goal for some of the levels has been changed. It is a very impressive port though. I am disappointed that it doesn't support the Circle Pad Pro for older 3DS systems, and I wish that they had optimised the game for New 3DS systems so that loading times could be reduced or even see an increase in frame rate from 30 to 60.
Due to the nature of the camera, I can only recommend this to owners of New 3DS systems. Without the C-Stick, I imagine that this game would be damn near unplayable, especially in the faster paced levels (and especially the very frustrating Mummy-Me stages).
I'm only 4 stages away from completing Episode 3 in both versions. A holiday release for Super Mario 3D World would be perfect as I would love to play that again too.
It's easy enough to do the always popular touch screen claw to play it without the c nub.
Just hold the stylus with your thumb and index finger and use the middle knuckle to press the buttons when needed.
You could alternatively try the Monster Hunter claw and control the circle pad with the index knuckle and the dpad with the thumb. And leave the other hand for the face buttons.
The third option is motion controls and a swivel chair...
They should've made it possible to tap or use the shoulder button to pick things/run though. It would've made it play a bit like kid icarus instead.
When it comes to Shy Guy Villa the special goal is to "sneak past all the Shy Guys", and want to know if I literally have to stealth my way past all of them, or will it still work if I defeat some (as long as they don't notice me)?
I sold my Wii U version of Captain Toad Treasure Tracker when the Switch announcement his and placed my Switch version preorder. I only played a few levels (loved it) but didn't get the time to go further.
I just realized they also have this on the 3DS. If they had different levels or some extra gimmick I'd totally buy both versions (like I did with Yoshi Wooly World).
I'm stuck on which version to play. I noticed in some reviews of the Switch version there was a blinking blue dot on the screen that looked really annoying, but it certainly looks a bit crisper than the Wii U version.
How's the gameplay on the Switch connected to the TV? I've got a Pro Controller and obviously the regular controllers too.
@Dreamliner, I haven't played on Wii U or 3DS, but here is what I can tell you. On Switch, the blue dot is always on screen when playing on TV (it's controlled via gyro, and is used to interact with certain elements on screen). The blue dot is absent when playing portable, however, as you can just touch the screen to interact with said objects.
The blue dot never bothered me personally, but I know others were very annoyed with it. I guess it depends on if it bothers you, and if it does, whether you'd be okay with playing it portable mode mostly to avoid it.

@Dreamliner : The addition of 3D was enough of a gimmick to sell me both versions. Was it particularly worth it? No, but I didn't mind playing the game a second and third time in tandem (being the Switch and 3DS versions).
I am not looking forward to redoing the Mummy Me Forever stage again though. I was never able to see it to completion back in the Wii U days.

I’ve learned I should not have sold my Wii U version. I was quick to sell in anticipation of getting the Switch version as I’m completely willing to transition as many Wii U games as I can to the Switch.
The Switch doesn’t have the same capabilities as the Wii U so if Nintendo makes poor decisions during the port (like a constant blinking blue dot...instead of going away when not needed) then keeping the game on the platform it was designed for seems to be the best decision.
I’ll definitely wait to sell the next port until I see in game footage. Except for StarFox Zero, if they port it....they couldn’t possibly make the controls worse.
I also bought Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze Switch...hopefully that doesn’t have any weird elements from the port...
@Dreamliner The blue dot is needed at all times though. In every level of Captain Toad you can hold enemies or grab coins using the blue dot and the Switch can’t tell if your actually holding the controller to the screen or not (as it uses motion controls) so it assumes you do want it at all time. And no DK has no “weird elements from the Wii U version” as the Wii U version didn’t use any of the “gimmicks” of the Wii U gamepad.
@Yosheel Yeah, 3DS looks to have the same functionality as the Wii U and I had no complaints with the demo on my 3DS.
@Mrtoad They should have mapped a “pointer wake” to a shake or a button or something. It looks very annoying and distracting since it’s always there, wiggling and pulsing. You shouldn’t be able to use the pointer to grab enemies or coins, that’s part of the strategy controlling Toad.
I tried the demo on 3DS, and thought it amusing enough. Then tried the Switch demo to see how the controls worked out, and was happy enough I decided to buy this game. And I'll be honest, I kind of regret buying it now. I'd known the puzzles would be fairly easy, although amusing. I did think the demo was fun. And the game overall is good. What there is of it, that is.
After completing what appeared to be the whole game and getting an Episode 2 I was rather disappointed. I mean, only 17 stages? Episode 2 is new stages, so that's good. But a total of 34 short levels for $40 seems a tad over priced. As yet no stage has taken more then 5 to 10 minutes to finish 100%. And I mean all 3 gems, the star, the Challenge objective that's revealed after beating the stage, and finding the Pixel Toad. Honestly, it's the Pixel Toad searches that are why some of the stages can take up to 10 minutes.
Good game, but I wish there was more to the game. It feels like it should have cost much less, considering the amount of content the game has.
I counted how many 'pages' were in 'episode 2' vs how many are in the initial one, and they were identical. IE 17 stages. I'm not counting the 'book start' and 'book middle' ones where there isn't even a puzzle. And considering "episode 2" is effectively a rehash of the story in "episode 1"...
If there's more after that, great. But even 70 stages may not feel worth $40 considering how short they are. I hope I'm proven wrong though since I do like this game.
