I'm pretty shocked at how much trouble everyone is having. I personally am waiting for a deal or a bundle or something before I buy one, but I like to look around for fun, and I have had plenty of opportunities to get one if I wanted to. The grey ones are much more common but I did see a neon one once if I wanted to go to the next town over.

Glad to hear OP was able to get a Switch!

On the other hand, Nintendo has to juggle production. If they overproduced it very well may have ended the hardware division of the company. If they under produce then it means they are leaving money on the table.

It is pretty impossible to overproduce a new console. Even if they had 3 million units ready at launch and only sold 2 million. The other 1 million would sell within that same year. Nintendo probably would have sold 3 million units in it's first month if they had them available.

The only real way to overproduce would be to have like 15 million units made.

This is not true. I find that a lot of people underestimate the logistics of mass producing advanced hardware. Nintendo (any big company, really) can't afford to have a million Switches sitting in a warehouse somewhere, hoping that eventually they will sell. It costs money to make those units and more money to warehouse them, and Ninty need to balance expenditures with cash flow. Every worker and company involved with Switch production needs to get paid on time, and shareholders don't like to hear that their company just sunk $150 million on Switches that will probably get sold in a year or two. Said shareholders tend to be especially jumpy when your last console was a very expensive failure.

In retrospect, Nintendo could certainly have made and sold more Switches. But at the time they started production of the original batch, this was a giant gamble - and after the failure of the WiiU, I don't even know if they had the money to do so. Just because a company is worth a trillion yen (a totally made up number, don't read anything into it) doesn't mean they have a trillion yen lying around to spend on a new venture.

We like to think that a nice company like Nintendo are all about the games, but the reality is they want to make boatloads of money. They would have made more Switches if they knew they could sell them and had the money to do so. There's no conspiracy here (I know you never said there was, but that seems to be what a lot of people think).

Finally got one! I was tracking stock online at istocknow and I found that my local Walmart just got some in stock. Well, my dad went ahead and picked one up at that Walmart for me today while I was at work! Seems living at home with parents still has its advantages (especially when one of them is retired and can beat the working crowd).

@Dev

I didn't know there was a shortage in Indiana since I live here too and when I went to pick my switch up on launch day after school, my GameStop had 5 left and then when I went 2 weeks later, there were still 2 left

And why not a Zelda BotW special edition too, while you're at it 😉

Ya, unfortunately they are. But in times like these, it might be all people can get without waiting another month or two. At least these bundles are good- the last GS bundle was a much harder sell with digital codes included for Has Been Heroes and SnipperClips, etc

I second JasonH (actually was just coming here to post about the bundles too). All of the items in the bundle are important accessories or excellent games — Zelda, Zelda DLC, Mario Kart, and the 128 GB MicroSD card. In fact, I think you actually save money by going with the bundle (assuming you don't get the aforementioned items on sale). And if you're not going to download games, you can always sell the 128 GB card on eBay.

I hear ya. Then you alone will be able to decide if the value of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is worth being that second game (I'm assuming Zelda is a forgone conclusion for you like most people on this site). You can always sell Mario Kart 8 though on eBay as well, I'm pretty sure it is the physical copy.

there are websites that do online stock updates (not sure if I can referecne one ) but they help, if you online grinding it should take more than a week to find one

My GS told me they just have cardboard boxes for everything for display purposes since everything is sold out.

I'm assuming Zelda was a no questions asked purchase for you like it is most people. It really comes down to whether you want Mario Kart 8 Deluxe or not, and the 128gb microSD. I think the SD is a must, personally. I bought a 256gb myself. But if you don't buy many games you may not need one.

MK8 Deluxe is probably one of the best games Switch will get for years to come though, imo. It was always a great game, but adding in that battle mode was crucial, and Switch lending itself to local multillayer so well with 2 joycons built in just begs for a game such as MK8 to keep on deck at all times. But if you're never gonna be around others you could pass the joycon to, it loses alot of appeal.

I was in a Gamestop the other day and I overheard another customer talking with a couple of employees about the Switch. Both employees were saying how awful Gamestop was for only selling the Switch in bundles and that they hated that practice. At least they were honest.

@Xyphon22 I've always found that most Gamestop employees are gamers first and GS employees second, and usually do their best to help you out despite their company's awful practices. They know how stupid these things are, but they can't do anything about it.

Here in Chile stock is beginning to even out. My local store has both Grey and Neon in stock, but same situation as Meowpheel - they're far more expensive than the suggested price in the US.
I'm waiting to get a gift card from my frequent flyer program for the store before I get mine, because US$520 is far too much. But at least, there's stock.

I have a chronic lack of time, for everything.

Now playing: Okami HD, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

For those of you still trying to find one in the tri- state area, you're best bet is to go to the Nintendo Store in Rockefeller Center, NYC. They have a schedule out on their twitter account that shows what days they will be making switch available to people. If you go lineup on one of these days, they will give out wrist bands to a certain amount of people who lined up. They gave out roughly 250 the day I went, and I got was #248 out of 250, and lined up around 3:15 for a 4:00 release. However, there were about 15 people behind the 250 with wrist bands who DIDN'T get one, but Nintendo applauded them for staying online and waiting the whole time and sold them switches anyway. So, if you make it there and you are one of the first people without a wrist band, it might be worthwhile to stay on line. Hope this helps anyone in the area!
