So they added an option to transfer games and save games to another console.
When would we want to do it? Right, when the first one is dead.
How is this new feature is useful exactly?
Instead of adding useless features, why not allow us backup save games on usb, or at least these cards that can extend the hard drive. Or, you know, cloud save game backup, like the rest of the modern devices allows in 2017.

Also, 4.0? huh? After half a year we get a round 4 version? This is confusing...

you cant save to sd card? i thought thats the whole point of this update is you can take your save off the switch so you can back it up in case of system failure.

Or when you setup two accounts on your console and the second person buys their own Switch. Or if your Switch is faulty in some way that doesn't impact on save files and you want to make sure you don't lose your saves when you send it in for repair/replacement. Or down the road if/when a new version comes out and you want to upgrade.

I don't see how the addition of this is somehow a negative. People complained that your saves were tied to the console and now they aren't. That's a step forward. IMO the only thing that's missing from the Switch in terms of saves is cloud-save which they have already talked about as being part of the paid service when that goes live.

Cloud updates are tied to a paid service on the other two if I'm not mistaken. Nintendo will probably do the same.

@TheLZdragon,
When? when your first console is dead and all your Zelda 60-100 hours will disappear?

They added normal features that shoulda been there since day one. Switch was a rushed product so thats why we get these updates that seem so awesome to the SuperFan when actually they shoulda been there from the start.
Nonetheless im happy to be able to use a my Sony Wireless headset with Switch.

Do you really think that the guy that will repair your console will 100% remember to backup your save games?

@Zeev
No I don't, which is why having the option to be able to do it yourself is a good thing. If my Switch died before this update? I would have to trust Nintendo to be able to transfer my saves. But with this update I could potentially do that myself assuming I know someone else who has a Switch.

@Samus7Killer
Not complaining about everything isn't the same as being a brainless super fan who thinks everything Nintendo does is awesome. I just think it's ridiculous that even when Nintendo does an update like this people still choose to whine. To the extent that we're even complaining about the version number.....

Possibly, probably. We don't really know yet. I'd put my money on it being part of the paid service but IMO I don't think it should be. Though personally I don't think we should be paying for online at all given they can get their cut from the software itself.

@skywake i wasnt whining at all. If i did I'd complain about 30 second video clip. Too bad they cant be like a normal console and allow for alot longer sessions. That's complaining. 30s is laughable. And complaining about version # is grasping at straws for attention...

Nonetheless the 30s feature i dont use anyways. Cloud backup saves are a feature thats hidden away, but nintendo is saving that for pay sub. I betcha the phone app is temporary when nintendo unlocks that feature within the switch for pay sub. This update was just to bring the console up to "normalcy" since it was a soft rushed launch.

@Samus7Killer Forgive me if I'm wrong on this, as I don't follow Xbox One that well, but last I checked 30 seconds is the exact length of time they allow on that console as well. In addition, Nintendo has already confirmed the time will be extended once they are certain it will not cause any issues.

It was when the console was released, but it is not 5 minutes.

agreed the transfer saves to another switch is pointless to 90% of people that only own one at a time, cloud or SD backups are the only thing needed and hopefully that's coming but I doubt it.

IF they are planning either cloud or SD backups than transfer from one to another wouldn't be needed so they wouldn't have added it to 4.0

@link3710 i dont have any M$ products so i dont care. But on PS4 i can record a long time

Ps4 pro can record for an hour 1080p 60fps but it also has a second processor for things like recording

I can see the switch doing 5 minutes with an update but not much more

People are being irrationally angry over this. I personally really appreciate the data and user transfer. The 3DS family line has the exact same feature and no one complains about that.

I plan to transfer my profile from my brother's switch when I get one for myself.

Hey doesn't it sound useful for that?

I'm sorry but you're the token "have a whinge" user on these forums. Whenever someone has a whine, however unreasonable, you're the one that joins their chorus. And everyone who stands on the other side is automatically a fanboy in your eyes. Frankly, I don't see what there is to complain about when features are added. And yet here we are.

@Meowpheel
Exactly, one of the obvious scenarios where this feature will be handy. I'd wager that a lot of users on these forums who got one earlier added a profile on their Switch for a friend or family member. If/when they get a Switch the ability to copy over their progress would be handy. Obviously cloud saves would be able to do that and more but it's a decent start.

@skywake I can't even read what the dude has said and I'm already nodding with you in agreement.

This entire thread is weird. I mean, there's still a lot to want out of the Switch. But the traditional way of making that point is by saying, "I want X, Y and Z", rather getting angry at a load of other features, and (bizarrely) the numeral which accompanied the update that brought them.

Anyway, 4 is such a loser number. Why would anyone call an update '4'? What's wrong with people these days?! Why didn't Nintendo do a Microsoft and skip straight to 10? 10 is a cool number. Everyone loves 10. 10 wears sunglasses indoors and can do backflips and things.

The capture features of the Switch seem to be aimed at the person that wants to post a quick picture or video to their social media. The PS4 is more focused on livestreams to Twitch and other related platforms.

I'm not sure how they will extend the recording time on Switch without performance issues. Are the games just constantly recording your gameplay in the background just so that it's ready for somebody to maybe hold that button? That's got to be draining a decent amount of resources.

Speaking of the most pointless whine in this thread. If you read the version history it's clear why this is version 4. They may be pushing version numbers up quicker than usual but even so each major version has been quite an update. To lay it all out:

v1: Pre-release version
v2: Added online, eShop, social media, HDMI CEC, news
v3: Can now add friends from Wii U/3DS, Friend notifications, USB keyboard, wired ProController
v4: 30sec video capture, save transfer, eShop pre-purchase

Every other update? Mostly just bug fixes and "stability" improvements. They've just changed their version numbering system vs what they used on the 3DS/Wii U/Wii.
