Anyone thinking about picking this game up? It looks like a great way to make waiting for the inevitable smash game a little less painful. I plan on downloading it tonight after work if anyone wants to add me on switch. My Nintendo network ID is AgentQ723, but my nickname is Baa. Not sure which one will show up. My friend code should be in my signature below.

The game looks just as fun as Smash because it looks great, but also because it seems to play just as good.
When I first checked the roster of playable fighters I was surprised they got it up to 18. http://www.brawlout.com/#Home_Fighters
I like how they implemented characters from Guacamelee! and Hyper Light Drifter.
But then I looked a bit more into it, and it seems like many of the fighters are clones, at least I found many to have similiarities:
1. Bio (Frog x1)
2. 3. 4. Sephi'ra, Nightma'ra, Natu'ra (Feline x3)
5. 6. 7. 8. Olaf Tyson, Acolyte, Dr. Tysonstein, Ooga Tooga (Walrus x4)
9. 10. Volt, Vandal (Hedgehog x2)
11. 12. 13. Chief Feathers, Condor X, Senator Feathers (Falcon x3)
14.15. 16. King Apu, Apunaut, Apucalypse (Monkey x3)
17. Hyper Light Drifter
18. Juan Aguacate
@Daftbomb so I have played the game for a couple hours now and it depends on what you mean by variety. Each of the different characters has a different fighting style so that adds variety to the gameplay, but there isn't much else to do besides fight. Also there aren't as many characters as recent smash games and you start out with only 3 stages and have to get your characters to level 10 to unlock their stage. Also there are no items and only modes I see are stock, time, and time stock.
The gameplay itself feels good, once I got used to playing a smash-like game without a GameCube controller. The game does stutter pretty frequently though and seemingly randomly. In each local match I have played, rather against a friend or the AI, the game will stutter at least 3 times. Most of the time it doesn't effect the gameplay but there have been a few times where it stuttered when I was off the map and it messes with the timing needed to use your recovery moves to get back onto the map and avoid enemy attacks while doing so. This happened even in one on one fights. Also Switchforce released a YouTube video yesterday saying the online is a laggy mess right now so I haven't even attempted to go online yet.
There are a few things I like about it that I think are better than smash though. From what I can tell (and so far I have only really played as drifter) there is no short hop, so jumping in the air seems ill advised for the most part and I like this change personally as it lets me have a better idea of landing patterns of the enemies to keep my combo going. Wavedashing is also very easy and allows for more aggressive play. You can air dash, which seems to be balanced by it taking a longer time before your characters is allowed to jump after being knocked off the ground. It also seems like all the characters fall fast when airborne so it makes juggling easier as well. These changes make the combat feel very intuitive and then the game becomes more about positioning rather than finger dexterity.
One big problem I have is the AI is too easy and also pretty dumb. I basically only play time stock and I routinely wipe out the computer in one on ones without losing a single stock even though the AI is on the highest setting of 9. To make this worse in the games I do lose a stock to the computer it chases so hard when I am knocked off the map that it kills itself. This doesn't lead to self-improvement at the game and I feel like when I do finally go online I won't be ready for the people who have been able to play against their friends more.
@PuppyToucher Wow thanks for the insight. I guess I should've elaborated on what I meant by variety but you've answered pretty much everything I wanted to know. The performance issue sounds like a deal breaker to me tbh, hope it gets patched.

@Daftbomb so I saw on reddit the developers are aware of the stutter and I guess it is due to the AI and they are working on a patch but don't have a set timetable. Didn't see anything about the online issues though.

I was thinking about it, but the reviews haven't been that positive and the characters look way too generic right now. The final blow for me is the single player, it's way too limited and the progression looks like it's way too much of a grind. Maybe I might consider this game once they add some more characters and content and put it on sale or something, but for now it's a pass.
@rockodoodle I think it depends on how much you enjoyed the gameplay of smash. Gameplay-wise I think brawlout is pretty good, but it's not a very polished game right now and it is limited on content but makes up for that with a $20 price tag. If it were me and I held out this long it wouldn't be wait for sale or take plunge now it would be wait to see if there is a Nintendo direct in January and if so reassess based on what's announced. If Nintendo says a smash is coming out in the first half of this year I doubt brawlout will keep a decent sized user base for long.

I think for 20 dollars it is worth it. It isnt perfect by any means but it is fun if you have a friend to play some couch co op with. We played for an hour or so. I played some of the single player towers for a while as well. I also like to just play a match or two on lunch at work.

@PuppyToucher Well- I don't think Smash is coming out for another year at least. Nintendo teased it for about a year on the Wii U- dropping hints on who each fighter would be and such. I think the earliest we see it would be Oct. 2019. And it might even be a little longer, given how well the Switch is doing. They can afford to take their time on it, and then also, it could even be beneficial for the system to get a bump in sales a little later.
That said, IF they mentioned it in the direct, as I mentioned, I think they would drag it out for a long time and we wouldn't see it until spring of next year.
@JayJ The grinding aspect doesn't bother me, but the limited roster does. That said, it does look cool- and I think I would enjoy it. But at the end, I am afraid that I would sit there wishing there was a little more meat on the bone.
Thinking of picking this game up, I’ve had my eyes on it since it released on the eShop. Now, I’ve never ever played Smash before and that seems to be the go-to comparison. So, would you recommend this to someone with no background history playing anything remotely related to this type of game?

I might get this game ,but it's a maybe since I have smash for 3ds. It could change in a day or two since I hardly play my 3ds because I take my switch with me more often instead of the 3ds.

I think you might have a few hours to get it on sale. If not, wait until the next time it is on sale. It's ok.
