@EvilLucario My save file says 2 hours 3 minutes for completion (veteran difficulty.) The main difference between this and CastleVania 3 is that all characters have their own health bar. If one dies, you get sent back to the last checkpoint and your other surviving characters keep their current health. If they all die, you lose a life and get sent back 2 checkpoints and all characters are back to full health. You get a 1-up every 10k points and there are plenty of 1-ups lying around so I typically had the max 9 lives remaining. It's challenging but fair, I died many times but never saw a game over screen. I'm interested to see what the nightmare difficulty is like because in CV3 I couldn't even beat the 1st level on the 2nd loop.

EDIT: Played the first 3 levels in nightmare mode. As expected, I'm dying a lot more. Since you start with your extra characters there are new paths through the levels, but otherwise the levels are the same. Enemies do more damage (Male-Sypha dies in 2 hits) and the bosses have some extra attacks. Nightmare mode is also a continuation of the story, picking up where you left off after the 1st loop so maybe beating it on all difficulties is required to get the full story leading into Ritual of the Night.

I've straight up never beaten 3, despite how much I love it. I'm kinda glad this isn't quite as difficult.

@kkslider5552000 Have you tried the 10 lives code for CV3? Enter "help me" including the space when you enter your name. Still a hard game but at least you're not starting levels over all the time.

I have not. I might next time I play it. Whenever that is. I think it's still downloaded on my Wii which is literally a few feet behind me. Legit one of the best NES games ever, if this game can come even close to that, this Bloodstained thing is already a success.

This whole thing is amusing timing for me since I fairly recently recorded footage of Castlevania 3 for a video too. What are the odds?

Quick game to get through but it’s cheap enough and very well done.

Sat down and did a play through tonight and I must say I am really enjoying it alot. It definitely feels like a.Castlvania even to the point of the characters felling just like the characters in Castlevania III. Music is top nothc and gameplay is great too. For ten dollars you can't go wrong.

You guys think this is a decent point to jump into the "old style" Castlevania stuff? I mostly stuck to the Metroidvania ones and I think the only other game in the series I've played was the PSP version of the game that's set before SotN (Rondo of Blood?)

Definitely curious about this game, it looks neat, people say it's great and it's pretty cheap for what it appears to be. But I've already spent way too much money on games this month, so I'm not 100% sure if I should be squeezing in another one lol

Really enjoyed this game. A good appetizer for the eventual main course. I expect i'll end up playing through it a few more times and try some alternate paths and such, playing it on Nightmare, and even giving Casual a shot to see how easy that is (since Veteran wasn't too hard in the first place).

ACK

@Tsurii Yeah, I'd say so. It's pretty manageable and generally lacks the conspiring level design of the classics, for better or worse.

Curse doesn't use spacing in the same way as the traditional games. It's much more open corridors focused on major enemy encounters rather than the Classicvania hallmark balance of platforming and pest control in tight confines for a claustrophic conspiracy.

So in a sense it's stuck between the old traditions and the (in my opinion, the worst of) Igavania impulses.

Thanks for the information guys. I just downloaded it last night and gave it a whirl. I'm really enjoying it a lot, it's like they took Castlevania III's partner system and expanded it a bit more with the level design of NES Castlevania.

I'm not sure if I like it more than Super Castlevania IV or Rondo of Blood just yet. I need to do everything and play it longer until I decide, but it's really really fun and scratches that Classicvania itch I've been having for years.

@ACK so... It's less about "spamming" enemies throughout stages and more about how the characters go into each encounter then? Like, you're not mostly fending off fodder ad nauseam until some badly placed enemy/RNG that hates you gets you killed.

Sounds like it may be more up my alley than what I remember of RoB then, not that I thought that game was bad. Just a bit too...iunno, oldschool(?) for me. I prefer stuff where I can focus on a couple enemies and don't have to fight numbers and the stairs lol

I have to say I really loved the nod to Death's hallway in the original Castlevania

@TheLZdragon Judging by how well Curse of the Moon turned out and keep in mind it was a stretch goal for Ritual I would be surprised if it did. I could be naive but I don't feel that it will.

@the_shpydar Agree I had that same feeling, I was like oh ****. Then I thought it was really cool of them adding in that nod.

I didn't expect Ritual of the Night to turn out well for some reason but now after playing Curse of the Moon I have high hopes for it.

I just beat the first two modes of the game. And yeah, it's pretty damn good, but on my playthrough of the second mode I barely died at all.

Come to think of it, for a Classicvania it was relatively smooth sailing for me. It's higher than the levels of the GBA/DS Metroidvanias on their Julius/Albus/etc Modes though. (Mainly because you don't have backdashes and other sorts of movement but whatever)
