Topic: Best Neo Geo fighting game ?

Posts 1 to 20 of 32

Hey,

There's plenty (too many ?) Neo Geo fighting games on the Switch eshop. I counted 12 already, and obviously most of us won't buy them all. So in your opinion, which is the best one ?

Maybe if you know them well, could you tell us which are the 3 best ones, and what are their main differences ?

Thx !!

I'm still waiting for the ones I like the most but I'm no expert so it is just my opinion. Amongst the ones already available Garou is for sure a great game but my personal favourite is World Heroes Perfect.

That is a fair question due to the fact there are so many that mimicked Street Fighter far too much. It's hard to recommend generic games like World Heroes, Fighter's History (ok, not out) or Galaxy Fight without advising you buy Ultra Street Fighter 2 instead! If I had to pick 3 I would probably go with King of Fighters 98, Garou Mark of the Wolves and Samurai Showdown IV (Waku Waku 7 if you can afford 4 ). They are all very playable without any overly obtuse special move commands. There was another thread asking a similar question but I can't find to link.

I never drive faster than I can see. Besides, it's all in the reflexes.

I second everything GrailUK said.

My personal favourites are the bladewielding ones: the complete Samurai Shodown series, and The Last Blade 1 & 2 (which are not out Switch yet, but on Wii VC).

I have yet to try Garou and Waku Waku 7, but only heard good things.

I didn't like World Heroes, Art of Fighting and Fatal Fury.
Why?
World Heroes has a generic SFII-clone cast,
Art of Fighting is gimmicky 2 layer fighting,
and Fatal Fury I played probably too late when it already had tons of sequels and was transfromed into KoF, so the first ones came across basic and graphically bland.

Those 3 are early Neo Geo classics (1990-1992) though!
If you want bigger bang for your buck I would check out the later releases where more advanced graphics and gameplay and MEGS were hammered onto the cartridge.
The Samurai Shodown games started big in 1993 though, and the whole series has aged incredibly well.

If you want your tiny list narrowed down to 2, I'd pick Last Blade 1+2.
In my own list its Samurai Shodown II + IV.

@ValhallaOutcast If I'd have to choose only one, I'd say that would either be The Last Blade 2 or KoF98, or both.
But don't rule out the side-scrollers: Sengoku 2 is pretty much a must have.

EDIT:
Aaaannnddd... you actually said two, which I kinda overlooked. Well, The Last Blade 2 AND KoF98 it is, then...

In my opinion, Garou MotW > Last Blade 2 > Samurai Shodown II > King of Fighters 98'.

Windjammers is by far the best non-realistc sports game.

Real sports wise? Maybe Neo Turf Masters? But the Neo Geo does have some decent futball games, although I've never been a soccer fan.

@bluemage1989 Well, in my opinion, that would actually be quite the list, but I don't mind summing it up for you, so strap in and enjoy the ride:

Super Sidekicks 2, 3 or Neo Geo Cup 98 if you like soccer
Pleasure Goal for indoor soccer
Neo Turf Masters for golf
Street Hoop for basketball
Baseball Stars 2 for baseball
2 Count Bout for wrestling
Neo Drift Out for car racing (top down/isometric)
Riding Hero for motor sports
Stakes Winner for horse racing
Windjammers for sports arcade game (it's almost like dodge ball, except with Frisbees, which sounds dull, but it's one of the most entertaining arcade sports games on the Neo Geo), and another good arcade sports game is Bang Bead, which is a bit like a mix between air hockey and dodge ball. And for actual dodge ball, there's Super Dodge Ball. And if you like bowling, well... there's only one Neo Geo game to cater to that, and that is League Bowling, but in my opinion, it is not very good...

Some runners-up:
2020 Super Baseball, Baseball Stars Professional, Top Players Golf, Goal Goal Goal, Tecmo World Soccer '96, Soccer Brawl and Over Top (another isometric car racer).

For an overall sports game top list, this might also help:

And while we're at it, let's add a complete Neo Geo game library top 50, for those curious beyond only the best sports games:

And finally, to get back on topic, here's a top five fighting games:

@ThanosReXXX thanks for the detailed reply and taking the time. Basically sums up everything I could need to know!! There's quite a lot there that's catching my eye which one would you say is the most essential to tackle first?? I mean based on the game itself rather than any enjoyment of it's IRL sport.

@bluemage1989 You're welcome. I always enjoy diving into retro stuff, so the pleasure was all mine.

As for your question: difficult to say, on one hand, because it of course depends on individual preference, but if I had to name one, from all these sports games, regardless of realism or being more arcade like, then I think I might go with Windjammers. It's really addictive, once you get into it. Except....

It's not available yet. It WILL be released on the Switch, but later this year. Keep an eye on it, though, because it's a real gem.

So, in the temporary absence of Windjammers, I'd have to go for the (in my opinion) next best thing, and in that case, I would go with Street Hoop, the urban basketball game. A good second would be Neo Turf Masters golf, which is another good option, if you're into the sport, obviously.

@ThanosReXXX I love retro myself but never had the exposure to Neo Geo titles in my youth so in some ways it's really cool coming to these games for the first time. Street Hoop and Baseball Stars 2 seems like a good start. Super Baseball 2020 seems to have a neat twist which is making it stand out to me as well and Windjammers well that is giving me some awesome vibes definitely one to watch out for.

To get the widest berth of quality fighters it comes down to Garou, Samurai Shodown II, The Last Blade, KoF '98, and Waku Waku 7. And if I absolutely had to pick one, then Last Blade. However, it's pretty obvious we're all on same page and most peoples fave are gonna come from that handful. If I was introducing someone to NeoGeo fighters for the first time it'd be one of the early KoF's where the number of fighters isn't so overwhelming, say KoF '95.
