There are some indication that the Spyro Reignited Trilogy is also coming to the Switch. A few months ago I wouldn't have thought the N. Sane Trilogy would be coming to the Switch, and it seems Mega Man 11 will be released the same day on Switch. Doom 2016 was probably the biggest surprise.

I wonder what you think about big third party releases. Are we just going to get them by default now? There's almost as many Switches in peoples homes as Xbox One.

Bethesda just teased Elder Scrolls 6, there will eventually be a GTA 6, Fallout 76, Red Dead Redemption 2, lots of (hopefully) good games are coming. Do you think they will just come to the Switch, no fuzz on the same day as PS4 and Xbox One, or will we remain in the limbo of having to wait and see if we eventually get a port of big third party releases?

I don't think we're getting close to all of the big AAA games. We're just getting the ones that are less crazy/ambitious/large/are relatively reasonable to port if you have a good team to do it. And if the publisher thinks it's the best use of their time to spend money to pay a company to port a game.

But it does feel like we've gotten to the point that the Switch can get enough of the bigger budget and marketed games that "not coming to Switch" isn't a neverending cliche like past years with the Wii U. Also, because there's only a relatively small amount of AAA games that even exist anymore. Like I bet in the past month, the Switch has gotten more games than the PS4 will get games this year that are too powerful for the Switch.

And basically, people need to see if the lowest settings in PC versions of big budget games run like the Switch version of Doom. If they do, there's presumably a chance!

I think western 3rd party support will be poor (2017 getting big games like Skyrim and DOOM being exceptions rather than the rule) and the Switch essentially becomes the JRPG machine thanks to strong Japanese 3rd party support.

I think well see decent third party support but I doubt the likes of GTA 6 will make it. Strong Japanese support, Bethesda, AA titles and hopefully more from Ubisoft seems possible but I think it still pays to keep an Xbox One/PS4 for those that don't.

Honestly I don't think I want Western third-party support anyway, most of those games I find kinda... meh. For every Doom 2016 and Deus Ex: Human Revolution that I love to bits, there exists five other games that don't really interest me like Anthem or Destiny. Most of the big budget AAA games I'm interested in come from Japan, like Capcom's Devil May Cry 5 and Resident Evil 2 Remake or pretty much every Nintendo game like Daemon X Machina or Xenoblade 2 DLC. Though Nintendo tends to straddle the line between AA and AAA for nearly every game they make, excluding the extremely expensive ones like Zelda and Smash Bros.

Not that it matters if Switch gets Western support or not for me, I have a good PC that can play any third-party game at 60-144fps so Xbox and PlayStation are nearly worthless to me (though PlayStation always had pretty cool exclusives to be fair). Instead, Switch needs just enough third-party games that cover a wide swath of genres, like Valkyria Chronicles 4 covering strategy RPGs, Octopath and SMTV covering your traditional JRPGs, and Mega Man 11 with action-platformer.

I just like Japanese and AA games (and indies) much more than Western, big-budget AAA games, especially nowadays. So for me personally, any Western third-party support is simply a bonus. But I think Japanese and AA/indie support are what we absolutely need above all else. More PlatinumGames, less EAs basically.

pretty much depends on the game. although, not quite shocking that switch is still not getting AAA games. even if Switch got some that has never appear on a Nintendo console. like Elder Scrolls.

Yeah, no. I think we are going to see plenty of A and AA titles launching simultaneously on Switch, but relatively few of those AAA games. As others have said, there is likely to be a lot more Japanese support because the Switch is an absolute monster in Japan. Which is great because on the whole I prefer Japanese AAA to Western AAA, but the catch is that not all of the titles will automatically get Western releases - and many of them will be released a year or so after the Japanese version. So the Switch in the West is probably going to continue to seem like it's not getting a lot of the hottest games.

Not that I mind this situation personally, as the games we do get will most likely be more than enough for my family and me. We already have a considerable "pile of shame" on the Switch, and the pile will probably just get taller and taller. I've had to make peace with the fact that there are still games from 2017 that I haven't bought and probably never will because there are just too many good games, and I'm not one to spend money on games that won't be played.

TL;DR - no, it ain't gonna be like that. We will get plenty of games, but I doubt they'll be things like TES6 and RDD2. If we're lucky we'll get ports of them a year later.

Problem with the last part is neither of those can go on the go, that is why NSW is outselling them. NSW doesn't need AAA games the market is already there for NSW itself so they don't have to push so hard to get it to the masses now.

@Agriculture I think it will always be a question, and more often than not, major top tier multi platform titles often will not be coming to the Switch. I love the Switch more than any other gaming platform on the market right now. But in terms of raw power, the Switch doesn't have the juice that other platforms have, and many major titles are designed to make use of that additional power. Especially the ones designed to look extremely realistic. I think it is safe to say we will get some 3rd party, multi-platform releases, but I would certainly not treat it as a given. Certainly not on the same day.

There is also the fact that the extra resources that go into a Switch port may well outweigh the potential extra gain. Or at least be demanding enough to make it of dubious worth. Remember the PS4 and Xbone are, for all intents and purposes, the same product. Extremely close in power and design, where the Switch is not, so it takes a lot more effect to change up a game for Switch than it does for the other two.

There's an underestimation how much less power and storage it takes if the game is 1080p30fps compared to 4k60fps. Look at MGS5 for example, they managed to get it running on the PS3 by reducing it to 30fps, decreasing the resolution a little and removing some details. And look at the file size of Crash Trilogy on Switch, only 5,2 gb, compared to the 23,32 gb on the PS4, which is mainly due to higher textures and resolution.

I think we may see some. For example, Darksiders 3 could be a possibility as well as more annualised games. I don't think any of the games you listed will come. Elder Scrolls 6 wont be able to run on a PS4 and has been set up as one of the first "next gen" games.

First of all... not sure how 20mil Switch units sold and 40mil Xbox One units sold =

lol, Jesus Christ.

But as far as the topic goes, I'm of the mind that it is absurd to wish every big, third party AAA current gen console game to automatically get a Switch port. Never in the history of gaming has the current gen handheld devices just get all the ports of major PC and console games of the same generation. I mean, its cool that some publishers are pushing for a port. But we didn't expect this with the 3DS or the Vita... nor with the DS and the PSP... nor with the GBA or earlier handhelds. That, at least is my logic. Nothing has changed.

Just wanted to note the PS4 version is not 4k. And also ask, is Crash on the PS4 really 23.32GB? The Xbox One version with on the 4k textures is only 18.9GB.

The Switch has zero chance of getting games like Elder Scrolls 6. Bethesda has stated that the game is intended for next-generation hardware. Gamers should expect a minimum of checkerboard 4k and 60 fps with their next-generation consoles, something which isn't possible on the current Switch. So unless Nintendo transitions into promoting the Switch as their portable-centric device, and introduces a new home console that can deliver checkerboard 4k and 60 fps, I would dial back your expectations when it comes to third party support for games being developed for release three, four, or five years from now.

@isturbo1984 The texture resolutions probably are, they just aren't rendered in 4K when you're actually playing the game.

I am talking of course about a version with reduced performance. It's surprising how old hardware you can run a game at if you are willing to compromise on some things. That's why we've seen so many PS4 games also getting a PS3 release.

Yes, this is it.
