Topic: Are the prices of Wii U re-releases on switch justifiable?

I don't believe there is an objectively correct answer to this question, but I am curious of what others think. I want to get a switch in the near future, and when looking into its library I see games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Hyrule Warriors, etc, that are for all intents and purposes "old games", yet have $60 price tags, and I'm just not sure it sits well with me. Yes, you're getting the DLC and a couple of new things in some instances, but still, I feel like a $30-$40 range would be more acceptable for these titles. Curious to hear the thoughts of others.

@LilVoidBoy Same applies to most of Nintendo's games. Kirby's budget isn't anywhere near God of War's budget (just to use two recent examples), yet both are €60. Reason is because Nintendo thinks that Kirby will sell well at €60, so there's no reason to price it any lower.

Supply and demand.

Sucks for me, cause I'm not paying €60 for a short Kirby game

Absolutely not.

Don't want it early wait til they have sales but if you looking for CE or LE don't expect that to go cheap.

Same here but you can always wait til it goes on sale or til the prices get's lower whenever that is.

@Octane : Meh. Kirby's a hell of a lot more fun than the cutscenes with occasional gameplay that compromise much of the PlayStation library.

"Gee, that's really persuasive. Do you have any actual points to make other than to essentially say 'me Tarzan, physical bad, digital good'?"

@SwitchForce Not into all the plastic junk, so I can live without the limited editions

Too bad Nintendo's games rarely go on sale though.

@Octane because they know they'll sell regardless. It's pretty ridiculous, but it's kind of like Disney movies. Disney knows how much they mean to people and they know they can charge full price forever.

Totally justifiable, just because the Wii U was a commercial failure doesn't mean Nintendo should suffer further when bringing its games over to a successful console like Switch.

@VindictiveCrow It is though. Look at Tropical Freeze for example, the launch price of the Wii U version is cheaper than the launch price of the Switch version. Why is that? Well because the Wii U was struggling, most Wii U games were priced cheaper than they would've been if the Wii U was successful.

@Grumblevolcano I really don't think Nintendo would have suffered a great financial loss by charging less for the Switch version. I used to work for Ubisoft, still am friends with some of the people there, and also have friends at Epic Games, so I've seen from the inside the kind of money a successful videogame can rake in, and it's phenomenal. Even through the Wii U's "Failure", Nintendo was never really hurting per-se.

@Grumblevolcano I doubt those games weren't profitable on Wii U. 1 million sales is more than enough for a game like Tropical Freeze or Woolly World, and nearly all (good) Wii U games sold more than a million. Games like MK8, NSMBU and Splatoon were almost entirely profit.

I don't think you can justify it at all. People just accept it because it's Nintendo, and apparently they can do no wrong.

Banjo-

@LilVoidBoy @KirbyTheVampire I agree. I think it's also why many people with Wii U aren't bothered by Switch. It's like paying twice for everything, pro controller included.

I think Metroid Prime Trilogy is a great example of doing things right, but even that was Retro's idea and not Nintendo's.

I already provided the Definitively Correct answer. Why are you people still talking?

Sometimes yes (Mario Kart because it's such a big hitter and had extra stuff, Hyrule Warriors had a lot of content, Bayo 2 was a straight port but still very good value with the first game included), sometimes no (Donkey Kong).

However if they sell well it's very hard to question the pricing. And for the record how much work was involved is irrelevant. It's what they think the market will accept.

Pretty much my thoughts. Personally I think too many people are too upset about this issue however. These are still full retail games, they do include previous PAY DLC and in many cases new features. If you already have the game on Wii U, good for you! But Nintendo is under no obligation to give you a discount if you buy it a second time, even on Wii U. If I buy COD on PS4 is Infinity Ward obligated to give me a discount on the Xbone version? Of course not!

It comes down to this Nintendo calls the shot for the wanted games they can keep the price where they know what it can ask for and others less known they lessen the price to get sales. But for all the whining no one here has been able to come up with a competitor that is innovative as Nintendo, Right. Less we all forget the cartridges is a Nintendo IP and Disc was far cheaper to mass produce. Not to mentioned upgraded graphics to go along with remastered games. But then again it comes down to this they ask for a premium for their games and whether or not you like it that isn't their concern. The more popular the titles the premium price they ask and less popular they know they can ask for less and still make the sales. Like someone's last quote:

To me, yes, mainly because judging on value, I see that these games are worth it. Mario Kart 8 is my favorite racing game ever, Bayonetta 1 and 2 are fantastic action titles, Hyrule Warriors is a very fun action game with TONS and TONS of content etc. Simply put, I personally find these games worth the price.

Something to keep in mind, most people don't own a Wii U, so the price comparisons to those folks at least are kinda moot. Like, when someone says how a PS4/Xbox One port on Switch is $20-$30 cheaper or w/e, that means nothing to me since I don't own those consoles.
