@masterLEON yes we should definitely set up a check-in procedure, otherwise we'll never know who is participating. I'm giving a shout to @Shiryu or any other admin/staff member just to ask for some suggestions: would it be ok to spawn multiple threads (just one a week) to keep the whole thing well-ordered and easily-readable?
The original fire has died and gone, but the riot inside moves on.
I'm fine with it either way really.
Thought about asking for a separate sub forum for score attacks to not overwhelm the main Switch board, but perhaps that might make most people completely miss it more easily.
Then again, there could be an overall Caravan Shooting Contest thread here that links to the current active thread there. I dunno.
I'd also be totally fine not to kill the current thread once the week is up, so that people who want to join weeks or months from now can still have something to aim for, cause no one has all the games really.
Again, maybe not a bad idea to consolidate such a thing into a main thread with an updated first post then.
As for tips to get a higher score in Pulsar, try to blow up everything.
Pieces of space debris for instance are worth more than certain popcorn enemies.
Also certain walls and ceilings can be destroyed and give some extra points it seems.
The main enemy seems to be time though as the final stretch in Level 2 as the timer is running out is extremely sparse with barely anything to shoot down.
So if you could somehow save an extra 5 seconds or so in any way, we might be able to get past that lul and score another 4 or 5000 points perhaps.
As of now, the only way I see to save seconds is to destroy the end boss of level 1 as quickly as possible.
No idea if you can save time on the subboss of level 2 (the one with the tanks on the ground and ceiling coming towards you on a conveyor belt, I think).
You're able to destroy him super quick with a bomb, but I'm not sure if it helps the timer.
Also, I'm not sure if you get less points by bombing enemies or get more less points by shooting them down with normal fire or a charge shot.
Although, looking at the worldwide scoreboard, it seems we're pretty close to the maximum score already, so perhaps I'm overthinking all of this.

@meppi64 "Also certain walls and ceilings can be destroyed and give some extra points it seems."
Yes, find ALL of those breakable panels!
"the only way I see to save seconds is to destroy the end boss of level 1 as quickly as possible.

I usually bomb the 1st boss as soon as the weak point shows itself. The popcorn that comes out is only worth about 100+ points anyway, so I don't bother. The mid boss of Stage (1) is like a mini version of the end level boss, as he has a weak spot that opens up when he shoots out the blue fire. I can finish him off quickly with the green spread weapon, to the point that the screen scroll doesn't slow down. But I also shoot the tanks that keep on coming out, which is like 10 points for the turret and 30 for the base if shot separately. I wonder if it's worth it, though. After the end part of that section of Stage 2, that we all reach 5 the 5 minute mark at, is even more empty space. There's not enough extra time left over to make it into the next part where there's more enemies. Hmm...
"I'm not sure if you get less points by bombing enemies or get more less points by shooting them down with normal fire or a charge shot."
As far as I can tell, they're worth the same points. Same thing with charge shooting through multiple enemies. That said, I charge shot almost exclusively. Not all of them are fully charged, of course. But the charge shot starts to pierce with very little charge. And the special weapons also need to be charged minimally before they can be fired, so it's a nice skill to pick up.
Still can't break into 140, 000 bracket. Had the chance to (I think) on a couple of runs but then stupidly crashed into the scenery on one run and got taken out from below by a pink line bullet - an enemy I had missed falling from above to begin with.
Oh well, my last score was 138, 750 and has put me currently 15th on the Global leaderboards.
I've probably missed a couple of names on there. If like me you use a different name to your NL name or NNID if you have one in your signature, then please let me know what your score is along with your profile name so I can edit it in.
I will make an extra sub-thread with the proper leaderboard that I'll update each week and put the link for it in my forum signature. As suggested by @Shiryu, we'll keep it to 1 post per challenge with editing done when needed. There can be a midweek 'current leaderboard' then at the end of the week edit the post to 'final leaderboard'. Please don't add any comments to that thread though, we'll keep it limited to just leaderboards for easy reference. I'll open a 'current leaderboard' thread now. Please give me a shout if your name should be on there or if I've made any errors.
Cheers for taking part everybody and good luck to you all.
If we keep that limited to one post per challenge with the original post being a midweek update on the current standings then the final standings edited in at the end of the week. I didn't put SHMUP in the thread title as I'm definitely open to it expanding to other kinds of arcade games. I do think it should be limited to only retro arcade games though. Leaderboards for modern games would be great to have too but probably better off kept in a separate thread.
Any assistance offered in making sure everything's correct and updated on time is much appreciated.
Whoops downloaded Blazing Star and not Pulstar. ๐คฆโโ๏ธ
Easy mistake. BLAZING STAR is the sort of sequel to PULSTAR albeit if it plays very differently. It's likely money well spent as I'm sure that game will be selected for one of these weekly challenges in the future. Who knows, maybe even next week or the one after that?

Thanks to this thread, I've played Pulstar more in this past week than I likely ever would have in the whole life of the Switch. Like others have said, approaching the game in this way has made me appreciate just how clever it all is. Since it lets us select any of the first 4 stages to start from it can be used for one of the weekly challenges in future too. Brilliant game!
@TheIronChimp I bought Blazing Star when I got my Switch last year. I played it with a mindset of trying to complete it rather than thinking about setting a high score. I really enjoyed it but it wasn't until I played it again a couple of days ago that I realised how great a game it is for high score chasing. The way the scoring works makes it a perfect game for this weekly challenge.
Holy smokes, looks like the closer we get to deadline day the more big scores we're seeing. How many people have taken part by the way? Just curious, the turn out has seemed pretty promising for our first challenge. Well done all and major kudos to the PULSTAR number 1. That score is incredible. Would love to see a video of the gameplay.

At the sake of losing some shut-eye before I work tonight, I think it was worth it!
I'll leave off with some quick tips.
-I bombed the Stage 1 mid-boss (which leaves a very tense corridor section right before the boss!)
-I bombed the Stage 1 boss
-I mashed the buttons to skip the end of level cutscene (when the background turns to space)
With that, I was able to make it to the next section after the game would normally cut off. And enemies started appearing but I wasn't in position to hit any before time ran out.
WHEW! Now I'm gonna take a power nap, Lol! I hope some of this new info helps!
WoW congrats for 1st position on leaderboards! Thats really impressive!
I had week busy so couldnโt play more. Iโll try to improve my score tonight if itโs not too late.
One suggestion if I may..
Maybe we should stick to one game for a little longer.. like, Pulstar next week stage 2 or something like that. Itโs about perfecting gameplay for better score and if you donโt have much time for playing, youโll suck.
Just my opinion.. but anyway.
Also, I would like to suggest Metal Slug series for competition too.
Also, Iโm probably gone start recording some of these runs. Would be cool to leave a replay for some of the players struggling to climb up the boards.
Leon, Not sure how you did that bruh, I physically canโt press the Y button anymore today. Would have loved to see that replay too.
