Topic: Anyone else want a Wave Runner for Switch?

Wave Runner for N64 was one of my favorite racing style games growing up, and I would love to see a new version, or even a port with updated graphics. Does anyone know anything about this ever happening? Or am I going to be disappointed and this will probably never happen?

I think you mean Wave Race 64? Was definitely a great game. Right now for the Switch there's Riptide GP3: Renegade and Aqua Moto Racing Utopia being the closest but neither are platform-exclusive.

Yeah of course but the reality is we won't be seeing wave race ever again.

@NewMaxx Yes that is what I meant! Thanks for the correction. How are the other games? I liked the causal mario kart feel it had.

@kobashi100 You think maybe they'd release it on the online store as a retro?

Yeah sorry, I think N64 version for sure one nintendo starts releasing the retro stuff. Still not 100% convinced they will actually release game cube games though.

New wave race. Just can't see it happening

The whole Wave "Runner" bit had me puzzled for a while, and then I quickly realized that you actually meant Wave Race, which was indeed a fantastic game back in the day. And in some ways, it still holds up today, regardless of the nowadays considered to be crude graphics.

The pinnacle of the series was Wave Race Blue Storm on the GameCube, and if you've never played that and still have a GameCube or Wii that's compatible lying around, I can heartily recommend it to you, because it improves upon the original in pretty much every way, and then goes the extra distance to make it even more special. To this day, there's still nothing like it.

I've tried dozens of similar games, on multiple systems, and even though some games are definitely quite enjoyable in their own right, they still aren't Wave Race. Can't quite put my finger on it, but in general, it's a kind of "feel" that Wave Race has, that all the other games lack, and the overall presentation only adds to that.

In my opinion, it's pretty much the same with the stellar N64 experience that was the original 1080 Snowboarding, which also had a wonderful sequel on the GameCube. That game also hasn't got any equal in the way that it portrays and more importantly: conveys the sport and its mechanics to the player.

But I'm afraid I have to agree with @kobashi100 that we'll never see games like that again, or chances will be VERY slim at the least. Maybe, just maybe, we'll get some N64 VC or GameCube HD make overs like we had on the Wii U on the Switch as well, but if Wave Race is going to be among them, that remains to be seen.

So, the only way to enjoy these games is either on original hardware, or via VC on the Wii or Wii U.

I wouldn't rule out a new Waverace. A year or 2 ago I would have said not a chance but the current Nintendo seem to be listening to their fans requests a little bit more than before. We asked for an open world Mario we got one, we asked for Metroid they gave us 2,we asked for new IP we got ARMS. With nearly all the big hitters already out in the console's first year that leaves things open for the next 2 or 3 years,so them returning to some older IP to keep the fans happy is inevitable. Whether Waverace will be one of them we'll have to wait and see but I'd say F-Zero is ahead of it in queue. Waverace is different enough to that and Mario Kart though so I think there's room for all 3. Just like F-Zero it would be a perfect game to have for the start of the online membership.

@ThanosReXXX Yeah I got the title wrong! Wow, I never knew there was a second one. I don't think I still have my gamecube, but I can check at my parents house. Hopefully they bring it back in the online store, but a new updated version for switch would be my dream. I agree about 1080 and Wave Race, they have a feel to them that I haven't seen in other games I tried to play later on. They had the right mix of realism and arcade and it was easy to get a feel for controlling the characters.

@Goatman Haha, okay, that's new to me. If you had a GameCube back then, where were you when Wave Race Blue Storm was out? And have you also missed the GameCube version of 1080, called Avalanche?

As for still being able to play them: don't know if, besides the GameCube, you still got a Wii or Wii U lying around, but you can also play these games on softmodded Wii's and Wii U's, by installing a USB loader, and a nifty little GameCube interpreter called "Nintendont". It plays practically all GameCube titles perfectly, so all you would need are the disc images, which can be found quite easily online.

If you care to give it a go, Google sites like emuparadise and the isozone.

P.S.

Have a look at what you missed back then:

EDIT:
And for good measure, let's throw in a bit of GameCube 1080 Avalanche as well...

@ThanosReXXX Never seen either! Thanks! I was only partially into gaming a lot of my life and so missed a lot of hits I am sure!

@Goatman You're welcome. And if you have any questions concerning emulation or where to still be able to get original copies of these games, just send me a reply or a message through here, and I'll see what I can do. (by the way: somewhat off-topic, but I am kind of curious as to what kinds of games you actually did have for the GameCube, though... )

Come to think of it, if you want to know about a good second-hand/trade in game shop in your part of the globe, then lukiegames.com is one to take a look at. I've ordered various things from them over the years, and it's always in great condition, and the warranty is pretty decent as well.

The only issue with second-hand shops like that is that they don't have any control over what game is in stock, so you'll simply have to keep checking the site or give them a call. (right now, Wave Race for the GameCube is not in stock, but 1080 Avalanche is)

And if your GameCube is nowhere to be found, you could always buy a refurbished one, something that Lukie Games also stocks. Shouldn't cost more than $60 - $70, so around the cost of the average console game today.

Other alternatives for the games themselves are Amazon or GameStop. Wave Race Blue Storm and 1080 Avalanche aren't highly available titles, so costs may vary wildly, but right now, GameStop seems to be the cheaper option of the two, since on Amazon they're asking ridiculous prices.

Anyway, hope you find that GameCube, or that you still have a Wii or Wii U, so you can still try out these great games. If you liked the N64 originals, then it's all but sure that you will enjoy these sequels as well...

@ThanosReXXX Thanks for taking the time to link these for me! It's going to be a long winter so Ill be getting the gamecube out it seems.

edit: Scrolling through amazon's suggested purchases showing all the N64 games, is making me so nostalgic I might have to grab one of those too. Wow. So many good games on that system, I want them all on Switch.

@Goatman Yeah, tell me about it, the N64 was one of my favorites too...

And the GameCube as well: so many great titles, depending on your tastes, obviously. Most people probably had some Mario games on their GameCube, but besides that, there are so many other gems on the system.

If you're into racing, as liking Wave Race would suggest, then the GameCube version of F-Zero is another one to look out for.

Another good racer, in my opinion, is R Racing Evolution, and for a bit of over the top arcade racing and crashing fun, the two Burnout games that came out on the GameCube are an absolute recommendation. And personal favorites and at least second best in the genre are the two Extreme G games.

And if, for example, you're into fighters, I'd go with either Soul Calibur 2 or Bloody Roar Primal Fury, but if you're into the whole rap scene, then Def Jam Vendetta is also a decent one.

Other great titles to check out are the Viewtiful Joe games, the Baten Kaitos games, Tales of Symphonia, Skies of Arcadia and Fire Emblem if you need to scratch that jRPG itch, the two Metroid Prime games (obviously), Luigi's Mansion, the two Zelda games (The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess), the two Pikmin games, Eternal Darkness and the whole range of Resident Evil remakes for your horror/suspense fix, Beyond Good & Evil, the two Time Splitters games, and for your over the top sports fix Beach Spikers, Black & Bruised, the SSX series and Sega Soccer Slam, and let's not forget several brilliant Star Wars games, such as the Rogue Squadron games, exclusive to the system. If you like Star Wars, then you should really own these, they're still great fun to play.

And taking into account that you might also like the all American pastime of wrestling, I can also recommend WWE Day of Reckoning 2.

I could go on and on, so many great memories, and a lot of them are also installed on my modded Wii, so I still play them every now and then, but I'll stop here, since I'm drifting further and further away from the topic at hand...
