Well lets talk about the online service and how supposedly horrible Nintendo's approach has been. What we know with some degree of certainty is that their new service will offer at least as much as the Wii U/3DS had. Likely with dedicated servers now. We also know that once they start charging they'll basically rent out online-enabled retro titles and offer special discounts to subscribers. If they offer more than this? That's a bonus. But I'm going into this assuming this is all we're going to get.

For people who don't subscribe we can also make similar sorts of assumptions. We can assume that non-subscribers won't be able to go online for games like Mario Kart and Splatoon. We can assume that those online enabled VC games won't be available. We can assume that they won't get access to subscriber specific discounts. However we can also assume that the eShop won't be locked behind the subscriber wall because Nintendo won't lock you out of spending money. We can assume that sales and My Nintendo rewards will remain for non-subscribers. We can assume that single player content will be the same for subscribers and non-subscribers.

And even if it turns out you don't like the deal? You can always choose not to subscribe or, if you want to be overly dramatic, sell your console. They're not forcing you into anything. You don't have to own the console and pay the subscription. And in any case it's not like their competitors are much better in this regard. The current rumours are that Nintendo are going to charge about half as much as Sony and Microsoft do.

Is this amount of information every single detail of what they're going to do? No. But I'd argue it's more than enough for someone to be able to make a fairly informed decision. We know what we're getting into here.

The E3 thing makes sense, but I have flashbacks to the Wii U years where it seemed like every time coming up to E3 everyone around here was like, "E3 is gonna be AWESOME, just you wait and see. They're going to announce Metroid and everything we've EVER wanted and blahblahblah." Then the presentation would happen, and we'd get ... Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival or whatever lol

Not saying they won't unveil a nice, healthy VC at this year's E3, but after the Wii U years, I'm going to remain skeptical.

And yea, again, sorry, not gonna read that essay you came up with. I think you're just a mad dude without his facts straight.

it's okay mate, I don't think we're going anywhere anyway.
Although I find it disappointing that you didn't have the time to read my opinion (more disappointing than you calling me a "mad dude" just because my opinion differs from yours) I'll be a good forum user and wish you hours of fun with your electronic product. Cheers.

@skywake but you see, all you have written is based on assumptions. More than the actual service in itself - which, more or less, it's going to be a functional online service - no denying, it's the principle of it that I don't approve. You can assume everything but in theory, you shouldn't be asked to assume anything at all - you should be given all the info you need before you commit with your purchase.
Nintendo obviously knows they can get away with it - because they make toys for grown up kids and grown up kids usually don't care much about anything beside getting their toys. That's why most people will buy the console regardless of the things you have written.

how did we get to this anyway?! Ah because I said launch feels rushed and the console seems to be lacking key things. I still strongly believe it.

Top-10 games I played in 2017: The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild (WiiU) - Rogue Legacy (PS3) - Fallout 3 (PS3) - Red Dead Redemption (PS3) - Guns of Boom (MP) - Sky Force Reloaded (MP) - ...

What did I say was outlandish? Hell, I'll number them. You tell me which numbers are nonsense:

1. The subscription will have at least as much as the Wii U/3DS had
2. The subscription will include "rentals" of retro games with online features
3. The subscription will include special discounts
4. Non-subscribers won't be able to go online with games like Mario Kart & Splatoon
5. Non-subscribers will still be able to purchase games through the eShop
6. Non-subscribers will still have access to sales and My Nintendo rewards
7. Single player games will not be impacted by the subscription service (BotW will play without it)
8. They are going to charge less than Sony/MS (source)
9. The only platforms that don't charge a similar fee are PC and Mobile

Now I'm not defending the service itself by any stretch. We don't really know enough yet to say whether it's a good value or not. But we do know enough for a decision about the Switch itself. I'm going into the Switch with the assumption that the subscription is $10AU/mo and only delivers as much as what I got on Wii U and 3DS. Which is a pretty crappy deal and almost surely worse than what we're actually going to get. But it's enough to make a judgement on whether or not the Switch is worth it with that in mind.

Same deal with the VC not being there on day 1. I pre-ordered my Switch with an assumption that the VC won't be there for a while. I had hoped that maybe it would be there but it wasn't the selling point. I also pre-ordered it with an assumption that they would charge me full price to download games I already brought on the VC. I hope that they will recognise my previous purchases but that wasn't a reason for getting it. I'm baking in fairly pessimistic assumptions about how they're going to handle stuff into my decision to purchase. Which is different to what you're doing. You're baking in pessimistic assumptions and pretending the sky is going to fall as a result....
