You're both confusing notifications for participation. You CANNOT turn off participation. The checklist still ticks whether it tells you or not. I want to be able to turn the whole list off. No notifications. No percentage bar of how many things I've completed. Nothing. Until that point I'm still being forced to participate in a meaningless Pavlovian experiment.

Lol at that point I think its just on you for even caring. You have to actively look at the games trophy progress to even see that information. Outside of that, they're barely even visible.

@shaneoh What participation? You're not doing any extra. Turn off the notifications and achievements will never bother you. Did you also get annoyed when Nintendo tracked your progress in some of the Wii U games for stamps? It's the same thing.

Notice the part where it says "Locked Achievements?" Tell me how I can disable that.
Those stamps are collectathon elements. May as well ask if I object to health packs in a FPS

@shaneoh Seems like you have an issue with Steam, and not achievements in general. Regardless, just ignore them if you don't like 'em? It's not that difficult.

@shaneoh Read my long post 1 or to pages before, I explained why I want achievements.

As @JaxonH said, a trophy/achievement is a nice way to document the things you done in a game.

You know what a sad world is? A sad world is there people buy everything just because it is branded like something but yet way behind other things. You know what a more sad world is we life in? Where people throw away food but others dont have enough to eat. So dont give me the "sad" world thing @shaneoh

@shaneoh That is exactly how I see it Shan. Imagine if Zelda BotW had achievements. It would have taken so much self discovery out of the game for the sake of a tick list.

Not really, because the developers could and would display them as "hidden trophies" so that there is no spoiler in the discription.

So after reading through this forum, I checked my Trophy Collection on PS3 last night (I'm a new PS3 owner and have never done this before). Most of them except for the ones I already earned are hidden, and was disappointed that Oblivion didn't have any since that is what I've been playing (although it's probably good as that game has enough immersion-breaking pop-up messages as it is). My thoughts are this: first, why are they hiding the trophies unless they are integral to the game and could ruin it if you know about it before hand, and if that's the case, why is it even a trophy? If it is something everybody has to do to beat the game, it should not be a trophy. A trophy should be a fun little thing you can try if you want to because you like the game and want to get some more enjoyment out of it, but those things should not be hidden, otherwise how on earth will you know what to do? But ultimately, it doesn't matter because as people have said, it takes work to go and see what they are and what you have. If you don't care about them, you don't have to (except for the 5 seconds in-game when a message pops up which I guess people have said you can get rid of if you want to).

I'll give you whatever I please. It's a harsh world we live in, everyone suffers. But it IS sad, as in the pathetic sort of sad, when no achievements stops you from buying a games console and enjoying it on its own merit.

Nintendo NEEDS trophies/achievements.

This feature has done wonders for the home consoles. I am a trophy hunter, and I end up buying games I would never buy because I enjoy collecting the trophies. I have even bought some gems that normally I wouldn't.

They add challenges to your games and add replay value to each and every game. Trophy collecting is a hobby and nobody can tell you it is stupid or a waste of time. That is the beauty of hobbies.

Switch game sales would literally double if there was a trophy system.

@shaneoh You give me whatever you please? OH SORRY YOUR MAJESTY I did not know that your are THAT important that you can say stupid things whenever you want.

Well it stops me because the Switch is no console you can enjoy by it´s own merit anyway because every multiplaytformer has a little bit more to offer and runs a little bit better on pc or ps4. So why bother buying games, wich most of them I already own on a console with slightly worse performance and less content? Just because I can play it on the go? I have a smartphone for playing on the go and even apple and google do have a proper achievement system. I can even play dragon quest 8 on the go, with better graphics, achievement and an even better controller then 3ds. Nintendo devices are always a generation behind. That bothers me so much, that is why I stop supporting nintendo for now.

@96OopAmgems
Quite the contrary, I would be an incredibly important person if I COULDN'T say stupid things whenever I wanted. That I'm not saying something stupid in these past few instances is purely coincidental. (FYI, you presumed to dictate what I could and couldn't say).

You don't need to double dip, I'm not, but there will be plenty of exclusives that will build up over time. The way you're making it sound, achievements are the selling point for you, which I think reinforces my likening of them to a method of conditioning.

Tbh I don't mind either way. If we get achievements then cool. I'm glad it's there for some people to enjoy. And if there's no achievement system added, no biggie, I can still fully enjoy my games. Either way is fine.

Well I'm human, practically all of what we think and do is based on judgements. I don't think I should be denied that right while everyone else gets to keep it.

Maybe you should just worry about you. And if you are upset that you can not turn off achievements, well then just ignore them and don't worry about them. Not hard to do.....

@JaxonH I doubt we'll be getting a trophy system for the Switch, at this point. The possibility of including one was likely already tossed around left and right at countless meetings between the console's designers before it was ever even developed.

Like you, I would like an integrated trophy system, but the hybrid aspect is WAY more important to me.

@Lethal But what is the difference between collecting trophies/achievements/etc. in a game where a developer chooses to implement them in whatever manner they chose to implement them (be it a long list of trophies like Tokyo Mirage, or a few individual achievements with in-game rewards like getting the gold glider in MK8 by acing ALL the time trials?) versus an "achievement system" built into the OS? There's no difference to the replayability or challenge added to your game at all. The ONLY difference is the meta "gamer score" and playground bragging rights online.

That's what I never understand about the achievements argument. People like yourself always talk about how it adds challenges and replay value, but when the exact same system with the same reward and the same challenge is added in-game but without the "automatically brag to my friends" feature it suddenly isn't actually about adding challenge?

And no, OS-level achievements wouldn't automatically double sales. You're one of the special few that buys games you don't even like just to collect trophies from it. If I ever buy a casino, you're getting a VIP invite

They're dabbling with a trophy system of-sorts with the 'MyNintendo Missions' tied in with select first-party mobile games - but, unless they roll them out across all games, it seems a little half-baked...

Super Mario Run has 'Missions' that kind of act as a record of your in-game accomplishments - but they're noticably absent in Pokémon Go...that could be because it's a free-to-play game I guess, which would be understandable - but I hope that if (when?) these get rolled out on the Nintendo Switch, third-party titles can/will have an accomplishment system too...

I think that the MyNintendo system could have potential...it'd be great if I could build-up points by reaching milestones & accomplishing certain goals in the games I'm playing - then use those points to get rewards (especially if they started doing Club Nintendo-style physical rewards again!) - it could be like a 'trophy' system with a typically-Nintendo twist! ..but I'd be pretty disappointed if they could only be earned in first-party games - all or nothing, I say!

I certainly see the value in implementing an 'achievement' system going forward - just to get with the times if nothing else! ..but I also find it pretty absurd that anyone would dismiss a console - and it's entire library of games - just because such a system is absent! :/
