It cuts both ways. Advancements in mobile performance over the last few years does give Nintendo more competition. At the same time that push for more efficient chips gives them more options. They can use that improved hardware to greater effect. Really, there will always be a place for dedicated hardware. Regardless of how good mobiles get a dedicated piece of portable hardware with more premium software built for it specifically can always impress. Especially when compared to the typical mobile game which is built for compatibility, micro-transactions and limited control options.

if true, and Digitimes is pretty reliable, then NX is definitely launching in 2016.

Not sure how reliable these rumours are.. No source and no way to verify them.

Anyway, Pixart Imaging is a company that specialises in face tracking, touch screens and optical techology in general. Unless we get a GamePad 2.0, they seem to be the company when it comes to the technology present in Nintendo's handhelds.

@Octane: Plus if they're gonna have 10-12 million units ready for launch its either console and handheld, handheld, or gimmicky console. To have that much ready for one device, that device must be pretty cheap to make. and there is a source in the link that brings you to digitimes. Do you guys click on the links?

My guess is that nx is in two waves a handheld in 2016 and a console the following year. Runs similar to a PS4/Vtita, ios style deal.

Even speaking for myself, I use my phone today in many contexts that I would have used my Gameboy Color for back in the day. On the flip side of things, it's hard to make a "hardcore powerful" handheld device that developers would be willing to develop for.

But see, for every one of "you," you get a one of "me." And I don't really use my phone a whole lot more than what phones classically do. (I mean, gosh, I use it for texting/calling/email obviously, but really not much else.) ESPECIALLY when it comes to games. Honestly, I have one game on my smartphone: Temple Run 2. It gets played uh... maybe once every couple months when I find myself stuck somewhere random.

And if they can shift these pretty quickly and build that install base, the developers will come. They know selling a million copies of a 40-dollar piece of software is way more reliable than selling 10 million copies of a "freemium" piece of software.

A quote from Shigeru Miyamoto sums it up

"In the days of DS and Wii, Nintendo tried its best to expand the gaming population. Fortunately, because of the spread of smart devices, people take games for granted now. It's a good thing for us, because we do not have to worry about making games something that are relevant to general people's daily lives."

@shingi_70: nah, 20 million is way too much for either type of device in just it's first year. I think they will release together next year, makes 20 million seem more plausible. But then again, THIS IS ALL RUMORS :D:D

@Paulthevgnerd: yeah probably like 20 million together for the first year.

Well for this console generation only two platforms have sold above 10mill per year at any point. The 3DS and the PS4. Last generation every platform consistently sold above 10mill but the DS was the only one that sat above 20mill throughout. Wii and DS were the only ones to hit 20mill/year, Wii held it for 2 years but the DS held it for four and flirted with 30mill.

I'd argue that 20mill isn't out of the question for either. But when even the PS4 is going to have a tough time moving that many units? I'm not convinced they can do it with a home console. Even if you ignore the Wii U's performance entirely and remember that fortunes can change in an instant in this industry. But with Sony now out of the picture and with the 3DS showing that 14mill portables sold in a year is possible with competition? I wouldn't bet on a Nintendo portable going above 20mill... but I definitely wouldn't bet against it.

Well if it is a handheld maybe their releasing a standard and XL on release might explain the high number.

this is old but pretty cool. I can honestly see this.

When I first heard the rumour that It could be a hybrid that's pretty much what I through of not a home console scaled down for the handles but the handheld been scaled up for the TV but I can't see it being up scaling to Wii U leave or being backward compatible with the wii U. I also like the clam shell designed if they dropped the bottom screen they have more room for control layout but if they kept the two scream they keep the backward compatibility with the 3ds.

I think its time to go away from the DS and Wii era. It'd be fitting with the iwata era clearly being over imo.(I mean that in the best way.)

NX will be a hybrid system with the controller being the portable unit. The controller will have a lenticular 3D free-form display. It will be the end of the flat 2D screen gaming era. They can't really ignore 3D when Sony and Oculus are doing it with VR.

If this is what the NX truly this, then I'm really excited. I've always wanted a "3D" gaming experience but hate wearing a headset. The 3DS doesn't count b/c it's still a flat image.

And, they said they'll continue to support the Wii U with games. Well, I can imagine those same games will work on the NX but require a patch to conform the HUD to their free-form display.

@hirobo2:
VR is literally the same thing as the 3DS it's just a slightly different configuration. They're still displaying a flat image to each of your eyes. Which makes sense given that your eye doesn't see in 3D, your eye sees a 2D image. It's only when both are in use that the image becomes 3D.

If you want me to get technical then this is how I would explain it. The 3DS uses basically a standard LCD with the left and right images being displayed on every second column. There's then a filter ontop of that which when viewed from a particular angle blocks out half of the pixels. When viewed from another angle it blocks the other half. It's like a set of vertical blinds. But however it works the end result is a different image to each eye.

VR? It's far simpler and it has to be because the demands are higher. Essentially what they do is have two images side-by-side and send that full image to each eye. There are a few advantages to doing it this way but essentially they're doing it because they have to. The screen is just too close to your face for any other method to work. Either way, the end result is largely the same.

As for the free form display stuff? The shape of a display has no impact on what the resulting image is. Particularly with portable devices. There are reasons why they might want to go down that path. It would allow them to put information on parts of a device where it hasn't been possible before. For whatever reason. But in terms of taking 3D to the next level? Yeah, this nothing to do with that at all.
